Reversibility in Dynamics and Group Theory

  • Reversibility is a thread woven through many branches of mathematics. It arises in dynamics, in systems that admit a time-reversal symmetry, and in group theory where the reversible group elements are those that are conjugate to their inverses. However, the lack of a lingua franca for discussing reversibility means that researchers who encounter the concept may be unaware of related work in other fields. This text is the first to make reversibility the focus of attention. The authors fix standard notation and terminology, establish the basic common principles, and illustrate the impact of reversibility in such diverse areas as group theory, differential and analytic geometry, number theory, complex analysis and approximation theory. As well as showing connections between different fields, the authors' viewpoint reveals many open questions, making this book ideal for graduate students and researchers. The exposition is accessible to readers at the advanced undergraduate level and above.

The Bloch–Kato Conjecture for the Riemann Zeta Function

  • There are still many arithmetic mysteries surrounding the values of the Riemann zeta function at the odd positive integers greater than one. For example, the matter of their irrationality, let alone transcendence, remains largely unknown. However, by extending ideas of Garland, Borel proved that these values are related to the higher K-theory of the ring of integers. Shortly afterwards, Bloch and Kato proposed a Tamagawa number-type conjecture for these values, and showed that it would follow from a result in motivic cohomology which was unknown at the time. This vital result from motivic cohomology was subsequently proven by Huber, Kings, and Wildeshaus. Bringing together key results from K-theory, motivic cohomology, and Iwasawa theory, this book is the first to give a complete proof, accessible to graduate students, of the Bloch–Kato conjecture for odd positive integers. It includes a new account of the results from motivic cohomology by Huber and Kings.

  • Automorphic forms and Galois representations have played a central role in the development of modern number theory, with the former coming to prominence via the celebrated Langlands program and Wiles' proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. This two-volume collection arose from the 94th LMS-EPSRC Durham Symposium on 'Automorphic Forms and Galois Representations' in July 2011, the aim of which was to explore recent developments in this area. The expository articles and research papers across the two volumes reflect recent interest in p-adic methods in number theory and representation theory, as well as recent progress on topics from anabelian geometry to p-adic Hodge theory and the Langlands program. The topics covered in volume one include the Shafarevich Conjecture, effective local Langlands correspondence, p-adic L-functions, the fundamental lemma, and other topics of contemporary interest.

  • The theory of optimal transportation has its origins in the eighteenth century when the problem of transporting resources at a minimal cost was first formalised. Through subsequent developments, particularly in recent decades, it has become a powerful modern theory. This book contains the proceedings of the summer school 'Optimal Transportation: Theory and Applications' held at the Fourier Institute in Grenoble.   • Focusing on the role that automorphisms and equivalence relations play in the algebraic theory of minimal sets provides an original treatment of some key aspects of abstract topological dynamics. Such an approach is presented in this lucid and self-contained book, leading to simpler proofs of classical results, as well as providing motivation for further study. Minimal flows on compact Hausdorff spaces are studied as icers on the universal minimal flow M. The group of the icer representing a minimal flow is defined as a subgroup of the automorphism group G of M, and icers are constructed explicitly as relative products using subgroups of G. Many classical results are then obtained by examining the structure of the icers on M, including a proof of the Furstenberg structure theorem for distal extensions. This book is designed as both a guide for graduate students, and a source of interesting new ideas for researchers.

  • Complexity science is the study of systems with many interdependent components. Such systems - and the self-organization and emergent phenomena they manifest - lie at the heart of many challenges of global importance. This book is a coherent introduction to the mathematical methods used to understand complexity, with plenty of examples and real-world applications. It starts with the crucial concepts of self-organization and emergence, then tackles complexity in dynamical systems using differential equations and chaos theory. Several classes of models of interacting particle systems are studied with techniques from stochastic analysis, followed by a treatment of the statistical mechanics of complex systems.   • The theory of operator spaces is very recent and can be described as a non-commutative Banach space theory. An 'operator space' is simply a Banach space with an embedding into the space B(H) of all bounded operators on a Hilbert space H. The first part of this book is an introduction with emphasis on examples that illustrate various aspects of the theory. The second part is devoted to applications to C*-algebras, with a systematic exposition of tensor products of C*-algebras. The third (and shorter) part of the book describes applications to non self-adjoint operator algebras, and similarity problems. In particular the author's counterexample to the 'Halmos problem' is presented, as well as work on the new concept of 'length' of an operator algebra. Graduate students and professional mathematicians interested in functional analysis, operator algebras and theoretical physics will find that this book has much to offer.

  • This short introduction to microlocal analysis is presented, in the spirit of Hörmander, in the classical framework of partial differential equations. This theory has important applications in areas such as harmonic and complex analysis, and also in theoretical physics. Here Grigis and Sjöstrand emphasise the basic tools, especially the method of stationary phase, and they discuss wavefront sets, elliptic operators, local symplectic geometry, and WKB-constructions. The contents of the book correspond to a graduate course given many times by the authors. It should prove to be useful to mathematicians and theoretical physicists, either to enrich their general knowledge of this area, or as preparation for the current research literature.

  • This book presents a theory motivated by the spaces LP, 0 ≤ p < l. These spaces are not locally convex, so the methods usually encountered in linear analysis (particularly the Hahn–Banach theorem) do not apply here. Questions about the size of the dual space are especially important in the non-locally convex setting, and are a central theme. Several of the classical problems in the area have been settled in the last decade, and a number of their solutions are presented here. The book begins with concrete examples (lp, LP, L0, HP) before going on to general results and important counterexamples. An F-space sampler will be of interest to research mathematicians and graduate students in functional analysis.

  • The famous and important theorem of W. Feit and J. G. Thompson states that every group of odd order is solvable, and the proof of this has roughly two parts. The first part appeared in Bender and Glauberman's Local Analysis for the Odd Order Theorem which was number 188 in this series. This book, first published in 2000, provides the character-theoretic second part and thus completes the proof. Also included here is a revision of a theorem of Suzuki on split BN-pairs of rank one; a prerequisite for the classification of finite simple groups. All researchers in group theory should have a copy of this book in their library.

  • In the past few years elliptic curve cryptography has moved from a fringe activity to a major challenger to the dominant RSA/DSA systems. Elliptic curves offer major advances on older systems such as increased speed, less memory and smaller key sizes. As digital signatures become more and more important in the commercial world the use of elliptic curve-based signatures will become all pervasive. This book summarizes knowledge built up within Hewlett-Packard over a number of years, and explains the mathematics behind practical implementations of elliptic curve systems.   • The British Combinatorial Conference is held every two years and is now a key event for mathematicians worldwide, working in combinatorics. This volume is published on the occasion of the 18th meeting, which was held 1st-6th July 2001 at the University of Sussex. The papers contained here are surveys contributed by the invited speakers, and are thus of a quality befitting the event. There is also a tribute to Crispin Nash-Williams, past chairman of the British Combinatorial Committee. The diversity of the subjects covered means that this will be a valuable reference for researchers in combinatorics. However, graduate students will also find much here that could be of use for stimulating future research.
