Effective Results and Methods for Diophantine Equations over Finitely Generated Domains

  • This book provides the first thorough treatment of effective results and methods for Diophantine equations over finitely generated domains. Compiling diverse results and techniques from papers written in recent decades, the text includes an in-depth analysis of classical equations including unit equations, Thue equations, hyper- and superelliptic equations, the Catalan equation, discriminant equations and decomposable form equations. The majority of results are proved in a quantitative form, giving effective bounds on the sizes of the solutions. The necessary techniques from Diophantine approximation and commutative algebra are all explained in detail without requiring any specialized knowledge on the topic, enabling readers from beginning graduate students to experts to prove effective finiteness results for various further classes of Diophantine equations.

Elliptic Regularity Theory by Approximation Methods

  • Presenting the basics of elliptic PDEs in connection with regularity theory, the book bridges fundamental breakthroughs – such as the Krylov–Safonov and Evans–Krylov results, Caffarelli's regularity theory, and the counterexamples due to Nadirashvili and Vlăduţ – and modern developments, including improved regularity for flat solutions and the partial regularity result. After presenting this general panorama, accounting for the subtleties surrounding C-viscosity and Lp-viscosity solutions, the book examines important models through approximation methods. The analysis continues with the asymptotic approach, based on the recession operator. After that, approximation techniques produce a regularity theory for the Isaacs equation, in Sobolev and Hölder spaces. Although the Isaacs operator lacks convexity, approximation methods are capable of producing Hölder continuity for the Hessian of the solutions by connecting the problem with a Bellman equation. To complete the book, degenerate models are studied and their optimal regularity is described.

  • This volume contains eight survey articles by the invited speakers of the 29th British Combinatorial Conference, held at Lancaster University in July 2022. Each article provides an overview of recent developments in a current hot research topic in combinatorics. These topics span graphs and hypergraphs, Latin squares, linear programming, finite fields, extremal combinatorics, Ramsey theory, graph minors and tropical geometry.   • Matrices and kernels with positivity structures, and the question of entrywise functions preserving them, have been studied throughout the 20th century, attracting recent interest in connection to high-dimensional covariance estimation. This is the first book to systematically develop the theoretical foundations of the entrywise calculus, focusing on entrywise operations - or transforms - of matrices and kernels with additional structure, which preserve positive semidefiniteness. Designed as an introduction for students, it presents an in-depth and comprehensive view of the subject, from early results to recent progress. Topics include: structural results about, and classifying the preservers of positive semidefiniteness and other Loewner properties (monotonicity, convexity, super-additivity); historical connections to metric geometry; classical connections to moment problems; and recent connections to combinatorics and Schur polynomials.   • The language of ends and (co)ends provides a natural and general way of expressing many phenomena in category theory, in the abstract and in applications. Yet although category-theoretic methods are now widely used by mathematicians, since (co)ends lie just beyond a first course in category theory, they are typically only used by category theorists, for whom they are something of a secret weapon. This book is the first systematic treatment of the theory of (co)ends. Aimed at a wide audience, it presents the (co)end calculus as a powerful tool to clarify and simplify definitions and results in category theory and export them for use in diverse areas of mathematics and computer science. It is organised as an easy-to-cite reference manual, and will be of interest to category theorists and users of category theory alike.

  • From Bäcklund to Darboux, this monograph presents a comprehensive journey through the transformation theory of constrained Willmore surfaces, a topic of great importance in modern differential geometry and, in particular, in the field of integrable systems in Riemannian geometry. The first book on this topic, it discusses in detail a spectral deformation, Bäcklund transformations and Darboux transformations, and proves that all these transformations preserve the existence of a conserved quantity, defining, in particular, transformations within the class of constant mean curvature surfaces in 3-dimensional space-forms, with, furthermore, preservation of both the space-form and the mean curvature, and bridging the gap between different approaches to the subject, classical and modern. Clearly written with extensive references, chapter introductions and self-contained accounts of the core topics, it is suitable for newcomers to the theory of constrained Wilmore surfaces. Many detailed computations and new results unavailable elsewhere in the literature make it also an appealing reference for experts.

  • The theory of invariance of modules under automorphisms of their envelopes and covers has opened up a whole new direction in the study of module theory. It offers a new perspective on generalizations of injective, pure-injective and flat-cotorsion modules beyond relaxing conditions on liftings of homomorphisms. This has set off a flurry of work in the area, with hundreds of papers using the theory appearing in the last decade. This book gives the first unified treatment of the topic. The authors are real experts in the area, having played a major part in the breakthrough of this new theory and its subsequent applications. The first chapter introduces the basics of ring and module theory needed for the following sections, making it self-contained and suitable for graduate students. The authors go on to develop and explain their tools, enabling researchers to employ them, extend and simplify known results in the literature and to solve longstanding problems in module theory, many of which are discussed at the end of the book.

  • The interplay of geometry, spectral theory and stochastics has a long and fruitful history, and is the driving force behind many developments in modern mathematics.   • The amount of mathematics invented for number-theoretic reasons is impressive. It includes much of complex analysis, the re-foundation of algebraic geometry on commutative algebra, group cohomology, homological algebra, and the theory of motives. Zeta and L-functions sit at the meeting point of all these theories and have played a profound role in shaping the evolution of number theory. This book presents a big picture of zeta and L-functions and the complex theories surrounding them, combining standard material with results and perspectives that are not made explicit elsewhere in the literature. Particular attention is paid to the development of the ideas surrounding zeta and L-functions, using quotes from original sources and comments throughout the book, pointing the reader towards the relevant history. Based on an advanced course given at Jussieu in 2013, it is an ideal introduction for graduate students and researchers to this fascinating story.
