This series has established itself as a valuable source of information for professional mathematicians and research workers in all areas of mathematics.   • These notes are based on a series of lectures given at the Advanced Research Institute of Discrete Applied Mathematics held at Rutgers University. Their aim is to link together algorithmic problems arising in knot theory, statistical physics and classical combinatorics. Apart from the theory of computational complexity concerned with enumeration problems, introductions are given to several of the topics treated, such as combinatorial knot theory, randomised approximation algorithms, percolation and random cluster models. To researchers in discrete mathematics, computer science and statistical physics, this book will be of great interest, but any non-expert should find it an appealing guide to a very active area of research.

  • The Siegel moduli scheme classifies principally polarised abelian varieties and its compactification is an important result in arithmetic algebraic geometry. The main result of this monograph is to prove the existence of the toroidal compactification over Z (1/2). This result should have further applications and is presented here with sufficient background material to make the book suitable for seminar courses in algebraic geometry, algebraic number theory or automorphic forms.

  • The study of geodesic flows on homogenous spaces is an area of research that has yielded some fascinating developments. This book, first published in 2000, focuses on many of these, and one of its highlights is an elementary and complete proof (due to Margulis and Dani) of Oppenheim's conjecture. Also included here: an exposition of Ratner's work on Raghunathan's conjectures; a complete proof of the Howe-Moore vanishing theorem for general semisimple Lie groups; a new treatment of Mautner's result on the geodesic flow of a Riemannian symmetric space; Mozes' result about mixing of all orders and the asymptotic distribution of lattice points in the hyperbolic plane; Ledrappier's example of a mixing action which is not a mixing of all orders. The treatment is as self-contained and elementary as possible. It should appeal to graduate students and researchers interested in dynamical systems, harmonic analysis, differential geometry, Lie theory and number theory.

  • This book, first published in 2000, is devoted to developments in symbolic dynamics and comprises eight chapters. The first two are concerned with the study of symbolic sequences of 'low complexity', the following two introduce 'high complexity' systems. Chapter five presents results on asymptotic laws for the random times of occurrence of rare events. Chapter six deals with diophantine problems and combinatorial Ramsey theory. Chapter seven looks at the dynamics of symbolic systems arising from numeration systems, and finally chapter eight gives a complete description of the symbolic dynamics of Lorenz maps.

  • One of the main achievements of algebraic geometry over the last 30 years is the work of Mori and others extending minimal models and the Enriques-Kodaira classification to 3-folds. This book, first published in 2000, is an integrated suite of papers centred around applications of Mori theory to birational geometry. Four of the papers (those by Pukhlikov, Fletcher, Corti, and the long joint paper Corti, Pukhlikov and Reid) work out in detail the theory of birational rigidity of Fano 3-folds; these contributions work for the first time with a representative class of Fano varieties, 3-fold hypersurfaces in weighted projective space, and include an attractive introductory treatment and a wealth of detailed computation of special cases.

  • This work, first published in 1995, presents developments in understanding the subdominant exponential terms of asymptotic expansions which have previously been neglected. By considering special exponential series arising in number theory, the authors derive the generalised Euler-Jacobi series, expressed in terms of hypergeometric series. Dingle's theory of terminants is then employed to show how the divergences in both dominant and subdominant series of a complete asymptotic expansion can be tamed. Numerical results are used to illustrate that a complete asymptotic expansion can be made to agree with exact results for the generalised Euler-Jacobi series to any desired degree of accuracy. All researchers interested in the fascinating area of exponential asymptotics will find this a most valuable book.

  • The aim of this book is to characterize certain multiplicative and additive arithmetical functions by combining methods from number theory with some simple ideas from functional and harmonic analysis. The authors achieve this goal by considering convolutions of arithmetical functions, elementary mean-value theorems, and properties of related multiplicative functions. They also prove the mean-value theorems of Wirsing and Halász and study the pointwise convergence of the Ramanujan expansion. Finally, some applications to power series with multiplicative coefficients are included, along with exercises and an extensive bibliography.

In this introduction to the subject, Professor Higgins covers the basic theorems they are likely to need, assuming only some elementary group theory. The book is based on lecture courses given for the London M.Sc. degree in 1969 and 1972, and the treatment is more algebraic than usual, reflecting the interests of the author and his audience. The volume ends with an informal account of one important application of the Haar integral, to the representation theory of compact groups, and suggests further reading on this and similar topics.

The Homotopy Category of Simply Connected 4-Manifolds

  • The homotopy type of a closed simply connected 4-manifold is determined by the intersection form. The homotopy classes of maps between two such manifolds, however, do not coincide with the algebraic morphisms between intersection forms. Therefore the problem arises of computing the homotopy classes of maps algebraically and determining the law of composition for such maps. This problem is solved in the book by introducing new algebraic models of a 4-manifold. The book has been written to appeal to both established researchers in the field and graduate students interested in topology and algebra. There are many references to the literature for those interested in further reading.

  • From rather modest beginnings, the British Combinatorial Conference grew into an established biennial international gathering. A successful format for the series of conferences was established, whereby several distinguished mathematicians were invited to give a survey lecture and to write a paper for the conference volume. The 1983 conference was held in Southampton, and this volume contains the invited papers, comprising three each from the United Kingdom, continental Europe and the United States. These papers cover a broad range of combinatorial topics, including enumeration, finite geometries, graph theory and permanents. The book will be of value not only to mathematicians, but also to scientists, engineers and others interested in combinatorial ideas.
