We study the continuity of topological entropy of general diffeomorphisms on line. First, we prove that the entropy map is continuous with respect to the strong $C^{0}$-topology on the union of uniformly topologically hyperbolic diffeomorphisms contained in $\text{Diff}_{0}^{r}(\mathbb{R})$ (whose first derivative is uniformly away from zero), which is a $C^{0}$-open and $C^{r}$-dense subset of $\text{Diff}_{0}^{r}(\mathbb{R})$, $r=1,2,\ldots ,\infty$, and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}$ (real analytic). Second, we give some examples where entropy map is not continuous. Finally, we prove some results on the continuity of entropy of general diffeomorphisms on the (real) line.

We prove that a class of weakly partially hyperbolic endomorphisms on $\mathbb{T}^{2}$ are dynamically coherent and leaf conjugate to linear toral endomorphisms. Moreover, we give an example of a partially hyperbolic endomorphism on $\mathbb{T}^{2}$ which does not admit a centre foliation.

In this paper we analyse the non-wandering set of one-dimensional Greenberg–Hastings cellular automaton models for excitable media with $e\geqslant 1$ excited and $r\geqslant 1$ refractory states and determine its (strictly positive) topological entropy. We show that it results from a Devaney chaotic closed invariant subset of the non-wandering set that consists of colliding and annihilating travelling waves, which is conjugate to a skew-product dynamical system of coupled shift dynamics. Moreover, we determine the remaining part of the non-wandering set explicitly as a Markov system with strictly less topological entropy that also scales differently for large $e,r$.

We show that the uniform measure-theoretic ergodic decomposition of a countable Borel equivalence relation $(X, E)$ may be realized as the topological ergodic decomposition of a continuous action of a countable group $\Gamma \curvearrowright X$ generating E. We then apply this to the study of the cardinal algebra $\mathcal {K}(E)$ of equidecomposition types of Borel sets with respect to a compressible countable Borel equivalence relation $(X, E)$ . We also make some general observations regarding quotient topologies on topological ergodic decompositions, with an application to weak equivalence of measure-preserving actions.

Our main result states that, under an exponential map whose Julia set is the whole complex plane, on each piecewise smooth Jordan curve there is a point whose orbit is dense. This has consequences for the boundaries of nice sets, used in induction methods to study ergodic and geometric properties of the dynamics.

In this work we deal with extreme value theory in the context of continued fractions using techniques from probability theory, ergodic theory and real analysis. We give an upper bound for the rate of convergence in the Doeblin–Iosifescu asymptotics for the exceedances of digits obtained from the regular continued fraction expansion of a number chosen randomly from $(0,1)$ according to the Gauss measure. As a consequence, we significantly improve the best known upper bound on the rate of convergence of the maxima in this case. We observe that the asymptotics of order statistics and the extremal point process can also be investigated using our methods.

Consider the system of n identical hard balls in ${\mathbb {R}}^3$ moving freely and colliding elastically. We show that there exist initial conditions such that the number of collisions is exponential in n.

A Cantor action is a minimal equicontinuous action of a countably generated group $G$ on a Cantor space $X$. Such actions are also called generalized odometers in the literature. In this work, we introduce two new conjugacy invariants for Cantor actions, the stabilizer limit group and the centralizer limit group. An action is wild if the stabilizer limit group is an increasing sequence of stabilizer groups without bound and otherwise is said to be stable if this group chain is bounded. For Cantor actions by a finitely generated group $G$, we prove that stable actions satisfy a rigidity principle and furthermore show that the wild property is an invariant of the continuous orbit equivalence class of the action. A Cantor action is said to be dynamically wild if it is wild and the centralizer limit group is a proper subgroup of the stabilizer limit group. This property is also a conjugacy invariant and we show that a Cantor action with a non-Hausdorff element must be dynamically wild. We then give examples of wild Cantor actions with non-Hausdorff elements, using recursive methods from geometric group theory to define actions on the boundaries of trees.

The space of convex projective structures has been well studied with respect to the topological entropy. But, to better understand the geometry of the structure, we study the entropy of the Sinai–Ruelle–Bowen measure and show that it is a continuous function on the space of strictly convex real projective structures.

A diffeomorphism of the plane is Anosov if it has a hyperbolic splitting at every point of the plane. In addition to linear hyperbolic automorphisms, translations of the plane also carry an Anosov structure (the existence of Anosov structures for plane translations was originally shown by White). Mendes conjectured that these are the only topological conjugacy classes for Anosov diffeomorphisms in the plane. Very recently, Matsumoto gave an example of an Anosov diffeomorphism of the plane, which is a Brouwer translation but not topologically conjugate to a translation, disproving Mendes’ conjecture. In this paper we prove that Mendes’ claim holds when the Anosov diffeomorphism is the time-one map of a flow, via a theorem about foliations invariant under a time-one map. In particular, this shows that the kind of counterexample constructed by Matsumoto cannot be obtained from a flow on the plane.

This paper establishes a fundamental difference between $\mathbb{Z}$ subshifts of finite type and $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$ subshifts of finite type in the context of ergodic optimization. Specifically, we consider a subshift of finite type $X$ as a subset of a full shift $F$. We then introduce a natural penalty function $f$, defined on $F$, which is 0 if the local configuration near the origin is legal and $-1$ otherwise. We show that in the case of $\mathbb{Z}$ subshifts, for all sufficiently small perturbations, $g$, of $f$, the $g$-maximizing invariant probability measures are supported on $X$ (that is, the set $X$ is stably maximized by $f$). However, in the two-dimensional case, we show that the well-known Robinson tiling fails to have this property: there exist arbitrarily small perturbations, $g$, of $f$ for which the $g$-maximizing invariant probability measures are supported on $F\setminus X$.

Let $M\stackrel {\rho _0}{\curvearrowleft }S$ be a $C^\infty $ locally free action of a connected simply connected solvable Lie group S on a closed manifold M. Roughly speaking, $\rho _0$ is parameter rigid if any $C^\infty $ locally free action of S on M having the same orbits as $\rho _0$ is $C^\infty $ conjugate to $\rho _0$ . In this paper we prove two types of result on parameter rigidity.

First let G be a connected semisimple Lie group with finite center of real rank at least $2$ without compact factors nor simple factors locally isomorphic to $\mathop {\mathrm {SO}}\nolimits _0(n,1)(n\,{\geq}\, 2)$ or $\mathop {\mathrm {SU}}\nolimits (n,1)(n\geq 2)$ , and let $\Gamma $ be an irreducible cocompact lattice in G. Let $G=KAN$ be an Iwasawa decomposition. We prove that the action $\Gamma \backslash G\curvearrowleft AN$ by right multiplication is parameter rigid. One of the three main ingredients of the proof is the rigidity theorems of Pansu, and Kleiner and Leeb on the quasi-isometries of Riemannian symmetric spaces of non-compact type.

Secondly we show that if $M\stackrel {\rho _0}{\curvearrowleft }S$ is parameter rigid, then the zeroth and first cohomology of the orbit foliation of $\rho _0$ with certain coefficients must vanish. This is a partial converse to the results in the author’s [Vanishing of cohomology and parameter rigidity of actions of solvable Lie groups. Geom. Topol. 21(1) (2017), 157–191], where we saw sufficient conditions for parameter rigidity in terms of vanishing of the first cohomology with various coefficients.

We show that a cellular automaton (or shift-endomorphism) on a transitive subshift is either almost equicontinuous or sensitive. On the other hand, we construct a cellular automaton on a full shift (hence a transitive subshift) that is neither almost mean equicontinuous nor mean sensitive.

We develop a constructive method to prove and study pure point spectrum for the Maryland model with Diophantine frequencies.

We investigate parallel Lagrangian foliations on Kähler manifolds. On the one hand, we show that a Kähler metric admitting a parallel Lagrangian foliation must be flat. On the other hand, we give many examples of parallel Lagrangian foliations on closed flat Kähler manifolds which are not tori. These examples arise from Anosov automorphisms preserving a Kähler form.

We establish the limiting distribution of certain subsets of Farey sequences, i.e., sequences of primitive rational points, on expanding horospheres in covers $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}\backslash \text{SL}(n+1,\mathbb{R})$ of $\text{SL}(n+1,\mathbb{Z})\backslash \text{SL}(n+1,\mathbb{R})$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}$ is a finite-index subgroup of $\text{SL}(n+1,\mathbb{Z})$. These subsets can be obtained by projecting to the hyperplane $\{(x_{1},\ldots ,x_{n+1})\in \mathbb{R}^{n+1}:x_{n+1}=1\}$ sets of the form $\mathbf{A}=\bigcup _{j=1}^{J}\mathbf{a}_{j}\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}$, where for all $j$, $\mathbf{a}_{j}$ is a primitive lattice point in $\mathbb{Z}^{n+1}$. Our method involves applying the equidistribution of expanding horospheres in quotients of $\text{SL}(n+1,\mathbb{R})$ developed by Marklof and Strömbergsson, and more precisely understanding how the full Farey sequence distributes in $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}\backslash \text{SL}(n+1,\mathbb{R})$ when embedded on expanding horospheres as done in previous work by Marklof. For each of the Farey sequence subsets, we extend the statistical results by Marklof regarding the full multidimensional Farey sequences, and solutions by Athreya and Ghosh to Diophantine approximation problems of Erdős–Szüsz–Turán and Kesten. We also prove that Marklof’s result on the asymptotic distribution of Frobenius numbers holds for sets of primitive lattice points of the form $\mathbf{A}$.

We study topological properties of the escaping endpoints and fast escaping endpoints of the Julia set of complex exponential $\exp (z)+a$ when $a\in (-\infty ,-1)$. We show neither space is homeomorphic to the whole set of endpoints. This follows from a general result stating that for every transcendental entire function $f$, the escaping Julia set $I(f)\cap J(f)$ is first category.

We consider dynamical systems $T:X\rightarrow X$ that are extensions of a factor $S:Y\rightarrow Y$ through a projection $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}:X\rightarrow Y$ with shrinking fibers, that is, such that $T$ is uniformly continuous along fibers $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}^{-1}(y)$ and the diameter of iterate images of fibers $T^{n}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}^{-1}(y))$ uniformly go to zero as $n\rightarrow \infty$. We prove that every $S$-invariant measure $\check{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}}$ has a unique $T$-invariant lift $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$, and prove that many properties of $\check{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}}$ lift to $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$: ergodicity, weak and strong mixing, decay of correlations and statistical properties (possibly with weakening in the rates). The basic tool is a variation of the Wasserstein distance, obtained by constraining the optimal transportation paradigm to displacements along the fibers. We extend classical arguments to a general setting, enabling us to translate potentials and observables back and forth between $X$ and $Y$.

Subshifts with property $(A)$ are constructed from a class of directed graphs. As special cases the Markov–Dyck shifts are shown to have property $(A)$. The semigroups that are associated to ${\mathcal{R}}$-graph shifts with Property $(A)$ are determined.

Let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}$ be a compact orientable surface of genus $g=1$ with $n=1$ boundary component. The mapping class group $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}$ acts on the $\mathsf{SU}(3)$-character variety of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}$. We show that the action is ergodic with respect to the natural symplectic measure on the character variety.
