In Erasmus Darwin’s Zoonomia several concerns of the eighteenth-century mock artists – their didactic technologies, their investigations in the physically extended and tacit dimensions of human cognition (‘intuitive analogy’, in Darwin’s terms) – received the attention of scientific inquiry. Darwin’s friends Richard Lovell Edgeworth and Maria Edgeworth fed his ideas back into educational discourse in Practical Education and then forward again into Maria’s novel Belinda. She had written one of the last eighteenth-century mock arts, her ‘Essay on the Noble Science of Self-Justification’. Belinda represents a final convergence of Industrial Enlightenment didactic experiment with an older tradition of mock-didactic social satire. Readers have complained that Edgeworth’s writing is hampered by its didactic impulses and by their uncertain instructive ends. This concluding chapter argues that the intentions of her fiction are coherent when read as part of the Enlightenment mock-technical tradition.
Long before the Industrial Revolution was deplored by the Romantics or documented by the Victorians, eighteenth-century British writers were thinking deeply about the function of literature in an age of invention. They understood the significance of 'how-to' knowledge and mechanical expertise to their contemporaries. Their own framing of this knowledge, however, was invariably satirical, critical, and oblique. While others compiled encyclopaedias and manuals, they wrote 'mock arts'. This satirical sub-genre shaped (among other works) Swift's Gulliver's Travels, Sterne's Tristram Shandy, and Edgeworth's Belinda. Eighteenth-century satirists and poets submitted to a general paradox: the nature of human skilfulness obliged them to write in an indirect and unpractical way about the practical world. As a result, their explorations of mechanical expertise eschewed useable descriptions of the mechanical trades. They wrote instead a long and peculiar line of books that took apart the very idea of an instructional literature: the Enlightenment Mock Arts.
It is not obvious why we are conscious. Why can't all of our mental activities take place unconsciously? What is consciousness for? We aim to make progress on this question, focusing on conscious vision. We review evidence on the timescale of visual consciousness, showing that it is surprisingly slow: postdictive effects reveal windows of unconscious integration lasting up to 400 milliseconds. We argue that if consciousness is slow, it cannot be for online action-guidance. Instead, we propose that conscious vision evolved to support offline cognition, in tandem with the larger visual sensory horizons afforded by the water-to-land transition. Smaller visual horizons typical in aquatic environments require fast, reflexive actions of the sort that are guided unconsciously in humans. Conversely, larger terrestrial visual horizons allow benefits to accrue from “model-based” planning of the sort that is associated with consciousness in humans. We further propose that the acquisition of these capacities for internal simulation and planning provided pressures for the evolution of reality monitoring—the capacity to distinguish between internally and externally triggered signals, and to solve “Hamlet's problem” in perception—the problem of when to stop integrating evidence, and fix a particular model of reality. In line with higher-order theories of consciousness, we associate the emergence of consciousness with the emergence of this reality monitoring function. We discuss novel empirical predictions that arise from this account, and explore its implications for the distribution of conscious (vs. unconscious) vision in aquatic and terrestrial animals.
Sleep problems are common in psychotic disorders and are associated with worse quality of life and disease prognosis. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have revealed genetic influences for schizophrenia and sleep, but polygenic scores (PGSs) for sleep traits have not been evaluated systematically in patients with psychotic disorders.
Methods
This study investigated the associations between PGSs for sleep traits (insomnia, PGSINS; sleep duration, PGSSD; short sleep duration, PGSSS; long sleep duration; PGSLS), diurnal preference (eveningness, PGSME), and schizophrenia (PGSSZ) with clinical features of psychotic disorders in the Finnish SUPER study comprising 8,232 patients with psychotic disorders. The measures included self-reported sleep and well-being, cognitive assessments, clozapine use, and functional outcomes. Using FinnGen data of 356,077 individuals, we analyzed the distributions of PGSs in psychotic and bipolar disorders and the general population.
Results
PGSINS associated with more sleep problems and worse well-being (e.g. worse health-related quality of life [β = −0.07, CI = −0.09, −0.05, p < .001]). High PGSSZ is associated with better sleep quality, worse clinical outcomes, and performance in cognitive tests (e.g. more errors in paired-associated learning [β = 0.07, CI = 0.04, 0.09, p < .001]). PGSINS was higher in affective psychotic and bipolar disorders, while PGSSD and PGSME were higher in schizophrenia as compared with individuals with no psychiatric disorders.
Conclusion
Genetic risks for sleep and diurnal preference vary between non-affective psychosis, affective psychosis, and the general population. The findings in this study emphasize the heterogeneity in genetic etiology of the objective features of disease severity and the more subjective measures related to well-being and self-reported measures of sleep.
Scopolamine is a muscarinic receptor antagonist and is widely utilized as a “memory-loss model.” However, its impact across different memory and attention tasks and using different modes of administration has yet to be clearly evaluated. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigates the effect of scopolamine, across all routes of administration and across different dosages, on memory and attention performance in healthy humans (PROSPERO ID: CRD42024531634).
Methods
Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, we searched (on 20 April 2024) for studies that utilized scopolamine and assessed memory and/or attention. Random-effects meta-analyses were conducted across a range of memory and attention tasks using “Comprehensive Meta-Analysis,” Version 3, to evaluate differential pharmacological effects on cognitive tasks between the scopolamine and placebo groups.
Results
Forty-six studies fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Scopolamine negatively impaired performance on all memory tasks (immediate memory, delayed recall, digit span, Buschke selective reminding task, and recognition memory) and led to slower reaction times for three of the five attention tasks examined (choice reaction time, simple reaction time, and rapid visual information processing) compared to placebo. Scopolamine’s negative effect on memory and attention was greater with injectable (e.g., intramuscular, intravenous, and subcutaneous) compared to non-injectable routes of administration (e.g., intranasal, oral, and transdermal).
Conclusion
This study supports the use of scopolamine as a “memory-loss model,” particularly when given by an injectable route of administration. Future clinical trials should evaluate the bioavailability of scopolamine across different routes of administration to ensure therapeutic benefits outweigh any potential adverse cognitive effects.
Cognitive impairment is a common feature of multiple sclerosis (MS), and its severity may be influenced by several factors, such as biological sex and levels of cognitive reserve (CR). The relationship between sex, CR, and cognition has not yet been fully investigated. Therefore, the present study aimed to explore sex differences in CR building and the effect of sex and CR on cognitive performance in MS.
Method:
233 participants underwent the Brief Repeatable Battery of Neuropsychological Tests (BRB-N), the Stroop test, and the Cognitive Reserve Scale. The t-test was performed to compare sociodemographic variables, Italian adaptation of the Cognitive Reserve Scale, and cognitive test scores between sexes. To evaluate the effect of CR and sex and their interaction on cognitive performance several models of multivariate analyses of covariance were performed (dependent variables: all subtests of Brief Repeatable Battery of Neuropsychological Tests and Stroop scores; independent variables: sex and CR). Covariates included age, Expanded Disability Status Scale, and BDI-II scores.
Results:
Women showed higher levels of CR, particularly in daily activities (t = −5.848, p<.001), hobbies (t = −2.591, p = .010), and social life (t = −2.362, p = .011). Sex differences were noted in verbal memory and fluency (with women outperforming men) and processing speed (with men performing better than women). Multivariate analyses revealed a nonsignificant interaction between CR and sex on cognition (Λ=.950, F(10,260)=.813, p = .617, ηp2 = .050).
Conclusions:
CR and sex seemed to affect cognitive performance independently in pwMS. This highlights the importance of considering both factors in cognitive assessment, and that both sexes may benefit from specific psychoeducational training aimed at increasing CR levels.
While cognitive impairment is a core feature of psychosis, significant heterogeneity in cognitive and clinical outcomes is observed.
Aims
The aim of this study was to identify cognitive and clinical subgroups in first-episode psychosis (FEP) and determine if these profiles were linked to functional outcomes over time.
Method
A total of 323 individuals with FEP were included. Two-step hierarchical and k-means cluster analyses were performed using baseline cognitive and clinical variables. General linear mixed models were used to investigate whether baseline cognitive and clinical clusters were associated with functioning at follow-up time points (6–9, 12 and 15 months).
Results
Three distinct cognitive clusters were identified: a cognitively intact group (N = 59), a moderately impaired group (N= 77) and a more severely impaired group (N= 122). Three distinct clinical clusters were identified: a subgroup characterised by predominant mood symptoms (N = 76), a subgroup characterised by predominant negative symptoms (N= 19) and a subgroup characterised by overall mild symptom severity (N = 94). The subgroup with more severely impaired cognition also had more severe negative symptoms at baseline. Cognitive clusters were significantly associated with later social and occupational function, and associated with changes over time. Clinical clusters were associated with later social functioning but not occupational functioning, and were not associated with changes over time.
Conclusions
Baseline cognitive impairments are predictive of both later social and occupational function and change over time. This suggests that cognitive profiles offer valuable information in terms of prognosis and treatment needs.
Cognitive impairment is prevalent, disabling, and poorly managed in multiple sclerosis (MS). Physical activity, often expressed as steps/day, has been associated with cognitive function in this population. This brief report examined the possibility of a (1) steps/day threshold associated with absence of cognitive impairment or (2) dose-response relationship between steps/day and cognitive function in MS.
Method:
The sample included 358 persons with MS who provided demographic (age, sex, race) and clinical (MS type, disease duration, disability status) information, and completed the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) and California Verbal Learning Test-Second Edition (CVLT-II). Participants wore an ActiGraph GT3X+ accelerometer above the non-dominant hip during waking hours of the day over a 7-day period for measuring steps/day.
Results:
The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis did not identify a steps/day threshold associated with cognitive impairment on SDMT (area under the curve [AUC] ranged between 0.606 and 0.691). The ROC curve analysis further did not identify a threshold of steps/day associated with cognitive impairment based on CVLT-II (AUC range 0.606 to 0.691). The regression analysis indicated significant linear relationships between steps/day and SDMT (R2 = .06; β=.251; p < .001) and CVLT-II (R2 = .06; β=.247; p < .001) z-scores.
Conclusion:
The observed linear relationship suggests that focusing on increasing steps/day across all levels of physical activity might have benefits for cognitive function in MS.
In the human body, the brain is the organ that underpins mental processing. Mental processes use the interconnected structures of the brain to synthesize the experience of the internal and external environment. Psychiatric symptoms reflect dysfunctional mental processing. These abnormalities in mental processes could arise from any combination of functional or structural changes in the brain. Neuroimaging technology provides us with methods to study these abnormal functions and structures of the brain.
In China, low levels of early childhood development (ECD) in rural areas may inhibit economic development as the nation attempts to transition from a middle-income manufacturing-based economy to a high-income innovation economy. This paper surveys the recent literature on ECD among children ages 0-3 years in rural China, including rates of developmental delays, causes of delays, and implications for the future of China's economy. Recent studies have found high rates of developmental delays among young children in rural China and point to poor nutrition and psychosocial stimulation as the primary causes. This review highlights the need for large-scale ECD interventions in rural China to raise human capital and support future economic growth.
The Stochastic Becker-DeGroot-Marschak (SBDM) mechanism is a theoretically elegant way of eliciting incentive-compatible beliefs under a variety of risk preferences. However, the mechanism is complex and there is concern that some participants may misunderstand its incentive properties. We use a two-part design to evaluate the relationship between participants’ probabilistic reasoning skills, task complexity, and belief elicitation. We first identify participants whose decision-making is consistent and inconsistent with probabilistic reasoning using a task in which non-Bayesian modes of decision-making lead to violations of stochastic dominance. We then elicit participants’ beliefs in both easy and hard decision problems. Relative to Introspection, there is less variation in belief errors between easy and hard problems in the SBDM mechanism. However, there is a greater difference in belief errors between consistent and inconsistent participants. These results suggest that while the SBDM mechanism encourages individuals to think more carefully about beliefs, it is more sensitive to heterogeneity in probabilistic reasoning. In a follow-up experiment, we also identify participants with high and low fluid intelligence with a Raven task, and high and low proclivities for cognitive effort using an extended Cognitive Reflection Test. Although performance on these tasks strongly predict errors in both the SBDM mechanism and Introspection, there is no significant interaction effect between the elicitation mechanism and either ability or effort. Our results suggest that mechanism complexity is an important consideration when using elicitation mechanisms, and that participants’ probabilistic reasoning is an important consideration when interpreting elicited beliefs.
The rising incidence of neurodegenerative diseases in an ageing global population has shifted research focus towards modifiable risk factors, such as diet. Despite potential links between dietary patterns and brain health, inconsistencies in neuroimaging outcomes underscore a gap in understanding how diet impacts brain ageing. This study explores the relationship between three dietary patterns – Mediterranean, Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) and Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay – and cognitive outcomes as well as brain connectivity. The study aimed to assess the association of these diets with brain structure and cognitive function, involving a middle-aged healthy group and an older cohort with subjective cognitive decline. The study included cognitive assessments and diffusion-weighted MRI data to analyse white matter microstructural integrity. Participants comprised fifty-five older individuals with subjective cognitive decline (54·5 % female, mean age = 64) and fifty-two healthy middle-aged individuals (48·1 % female, mean age = 53). Age inversely correlated with certain cognitive functions and global brain metrics, across both cohorts. Adherence to the Mediterranean, DASH and Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay diets showed no significant cognitive or global brain metric improvements after adjusting for covariates (age, education, BMI). Network-based statistics analysis revealed differences in brain subnetworks based on DASH diet adherence levels in the subjective cognitive decline cohort. In the healthy cohort, lower white matter connectivity was associated with reduced adherence to Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay and DASH diets. Ultimately, the study found no strong evidence connecting dietary patterns to cognitive or brain connectivity outcomes. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies and refine dietary assessments.
Independence in everyday functioning has been associated with successful aging and declines in functioning may be indicative of pathological cognitive decline. Social determinants of health, like economic status and access to health care, a]lso play a role in everyday functioning. Understanding these factors are of particular importance for older Black adults who have had long-standing disparate access to care, education, and treatments. The current study aimed to evaluate social determinants of health, more specifically social engagement, as moderators of the association between cognition and everyday functioning.
Method:
A sample of 930 older Black adults from Rush University: The Memory and Aging Project, African American Clinical Core, and Minority Adult Research Study were used. Participants completed a battery of neuropsychological testing as well as questionnaires about their everyday functioning and social behaviors. Hierarchical linear regressions were utilized to determine to what extent social factors moderated the relationship between cognition and everyday functioning.
Results:
Late life social activity reduced the effect of global cognition on everyday functioning and was independently associated with everyday functioning. Social network size was associated with increased impairment.
Conclusion:
Results from the current study provide novel information regarding the role of social interaction on cognition in an older Black adult sample. Future interventions may benefit from an emphasis on increasing social engagement.
My understanding of children’s cognitive development involved a series of progressive shifts in my understanding of what is involved in learning a language. Rather than language serving as a means of expressing and sharing existing thoughts, I came to see language as the exclusive means of creating thought itself. To my surprise I have become a sort of “Nominalist”; the view that language is the vehicle of thought itself.
Loneliness is a risk factor for late-life dementia. There is less consistent evidence of its association with cognitive performance. This study examined the replicability of the association between loneliness and overall and domain-specific cognitive function and informant-rated cognitive decline in cohorts from seven countries: the United States, England, India, China, South Africa, Mexico, and Chile.
Methods
Data were from the Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol administered in seven population-based studies (total N > 20,000). Participants reported their loneliness, completed a battery of cognitive tests, and nominated a knowledgeable informant to rate their cognitive decline. Random-effect meta-analyses were used to summarize the associations from each cohort.
Results
Loneliness was associated with poor overall cognitive performance and informant-rated cognitive decline controlling for sociodemographic factors (meta-analytic correlation for overall cognition = −.10 [95% CI = −.13, −.06] and informant-rated decline = .16 [95% CI = .14, .17]). Despite some heterogeneity, the associations were significant across samples from Africa, Asia, Europe, North, Central, and South America. The meta-analysis also indicated an association with specific cognitive domains: episodic memory, speed-attention, visuospatial abilities, numeric reasoning, and verbal fluency. The associations were attenuated but persisted when depressive symptoms were added as a covariate. Depression, cognitive impairment, and sociodemographic factors did not consistently moderate the associations across samples.
Conclusions
Loneliness is associated with poor performance across multiple domains of cognition and observer-rated cognitive decline, associations that replicated across diverse world regions and cultures.

This paper presents the main topics, arguments, and positions in the philosophy of AI at present (excluding ethics). Apart from the basic concepts of intelligence and computation, the main topics of artificial cognition are perception, action, meaning, rational choice, free will, consciousness, and normativity. Through a better understanding of these topics, the philosophy of AI contributes to our understanding of the nature, prospects, and value of AI. Furthermore, these topics can be understood more deeply through the discussion of AI; so we suggest that “AI philosophy” provides a new method for philosophy.
Despite the importance of cognitive development for vocabulary acquisition, limited attention has been given to the impacts of cognitive factors on this phenomenon from a longitudinal perspective. This study evaluates the longitudinal development of such factors (i.e. metacognitive knowledge, working memory, and non-verbal intelligence) and L2 vocabulary knowledge growth in 210 young second language learners enrolled in a bilingual programme in China. Results supported individual differences in the initial level and the growth rate of learners’ cognitive development and vocabulary knowledge growth: a higher starting level of cognitive development correlated with a higher level of vocabulary knowledge and a faster rate of vocabulary knowledge growth. Findings revealed particularly significant predictive role of metacognitive knowledge on vocabulary knowledge, followed by non-verbal intelligence and working memory. Relevant implications were discussed based on the findings.
This chapter summarizes the functional–anatomic organization of the connectivity of the basal ganglia with the thalamocortical systems and the brainstem. This connectional organization substantiates the neural basis for the wide array of functions in which the basal ganglia are involved, ranging from pure sensorimotor to cognitive–executive and emotional–motivational behaviors. Across this broad array of motor and behavioral functions, the mechanism by which the basal ganglia contribute to these functions is through “response selection.” This mechanism fits well with the arrangement of the intrinsic connections between the individual basal ganglia nuclei, supporting the selection of appropriate responses in a particular context and, at the same time, the suppression of inadequate responses. A variety of symptoms as part of neurologic movement disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease and dystonia, or neuropsychiatric diseases like obsessive-compulsive disorder, mood disorders, and drug addiction, might be interpreted as an inadequate selection of motor, cognitive, or affective responses to internal or external stimuli.
Although Parkinson’s disease (PD) is most associated with and diagnosed by the presence of motor symptoms, non-motor symptoms (NMS) can often be the most debilitating for patients. Highly prevalent among non-motor features are neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS), including depression, anxiety, psychosis, impulse control disorders, apathy and cognitive impairment, the latter being particularly burdensome and occurring in the majority of PD patients long term. The neurobiological underpinnings of NPS are a mix of disease-related, other neurodegenerative disease processes, PD treatment effects and psychosocial factors. NPS can be difficult to recognize and diagnose in PD patients; therefore, PD-specific assessments have been developed to better identify and treat them. Treatment strategies are a mix of those used in the general population for these conditions and those specific to PD, and are a combination of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions. Although significant advances have been made in our understanding and management of NPS in PD, etiology or biologically informed management strategies are needed to further advance the field.
