Evolution of solitary waves and an undular bore intruding through an abrupt transition from a wide basin into a narrow channel with opposing current is investigated. The laboratory experiments are performed in a wave tank that is crafted to achieve a steady and symmetrical shallow-water jet in the basin. The channel has a breadth comparable to the wave lengths, and the flow has Froude number approximately 0.1. The opposing current amplifies and slows the incoming waves on the jet in the basin, but the propagation speed is faster than the local Doppler effect of the current due to the influence of the wave propagating in the flank of the jet. At the channel mouth, the wave amplitude is enhanced due to the waveform altered by the current in the basin, although the amplification in the upstream channel is similar with and without the current. The longer incident waves have greater amplification into the channel. The leading wave of the undular bore is impacted by the opposing flow and transition similarly to the solitary waves. In contrast, the subsequent waves of the undular bore have a complex phase interference on the jet that causes disconnection in the lateral wave formation across the breadth of the jet. At the transition, the subsequent waves exhibit greater amplification than the leading one due to accumulated wave energy at the channel mouth. The intrusion of the undular bore against the current further enhances a rise in mean water level in the channel.

We investigate the drag reduction effect of the streamwise travelling wave-like wall deformation in a high-Reynolds-number turbulent channel flow by large-eddy simulation (LES). First, we assess the validity of subgrid-scale models in uncontrolled and controlled flows. For friction Reynolds numbers $Re_\tau = 360$ and $720$, the Smagorinsky and wall-adapting local eddy-viscosity (WALE) models with a damping function can reproduce well the mean velocity profile obtained by direct numerical simulation (DNS) in both the uncontrolled and controlled flows, leading to a small difference in drag reduction rate between LES and DNS. The LES with finer grid resolution can reproduce well the key structures observed in the DNS of the controlled flow. These results show that the high-fidelity LES is valid for appropriately predicting the drag reduction effect. In addition, a small computational domain is sufficient for reproducing the turbulence statistics, key structures and drag reduction rate obtained by DNS. Subsequently, to investigate the trend of drag reduction rate at higher Reynolds numbers, we utilize the WALE model with the damping function to investigate the control effect at higher Reynolds numbers up to $Re_\tau = 3240$. According to the analyses of turbulence statistics and instantaneous flow fields, the drag reduction at higher Reynolds numbers occurs basically through the same mechanism as that at lower Reynolds numbers. In addition, the drag reduction rate obtained by the present LES approaches that predicted using the semi-empirical formula (Nabae et al., Intl J. Heat Fluid Flow, vol. 82, 2020, 108550) as the friction Reynolds number increases, which supports the high predictability of the semi-empirical formula at significantly high Reynolds numbers.

Linear non-modal analyses are performed to study the mechanism of how deformable free surfaces influence very-large-scale motions (VLSMs) in turbulent open channel flows. The mean velocity and eddy viscosity profiles obtained from direct numerical simulations are used in the generalised Orr–Sommerfeld and Squire equations to represent background turbulence effects. Solutions of surface-wave eigenmodes and shear eigenmodes are obtained. The results indicate that at high Froude numbers, free surfaces enhance the maximum transient growth rate of VLSMs through surface-wave eigenmodes. We then analyse the energy budget equation to reveal the underlying mechanism. For streamwise-uniform motions, the energy growth rate is enhanced by an energy production term associated with the correlation between the streamwise velocity, which is generated by the lifting-up effect of streamwise vortices composed of shear eigenmodes, and the vertical velocity, which is induced by a spanwise standing wave composed of surface-wave eigenmodes. For streamwise-varying motions, the energy growth rate is enhanced by a standing wave moving with a pair of vortices that travel at a speed approximately equal to the projection of the mean surface velocity along the wavenumber vector direction. Finally, an analytical expression of the energy production term is derived to provide the initial conditions for the maximum transient growth and explain the weak free-surface effect observed at large spanwise wavenumbers and low Froude numbers. The results demonstrate a linear non-modal mechanism in interactions between free surfaces and VLSMs in open channel flows.

The eddy-viscosity model, as initially used to model the mean Reynolds stress, has been widely used in the linear analysis of turbulence recently by direct extension. In this study, the mechanism of the eddy viscosity in improving the prediction of fluctuation structures with linear analysis is clarified by investigating the statistical properties of forcing, eddy-viscosity term and their correlations. From the direct numerical simulation (DNS) results of turbulent channel flows with $Re_{\tau }=186$–$2003$, the spatial correlation of forcing is partially cancelled due to its interaction with eddy-viscosity terms. The stochastic forcing after excluding the eddy-viscosity term is nearly uncorrelated spatially, which better matches the condition where the resolvent modes are consistent with the spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) modes from DNS. With the above findings, an optimisation framework is developed by minimising the spatial correlations of the stochastic forcing. The optimised eddy-viscosity profiles nearly overlap with the mean-quantity-based model in the near-wall region, but have different maximum values. Compared with the mean-quantity-based model, the optimised results enhance the consistency between the resolvent and DNS results significantly. Based on the optimised results, a new modelling framework is further abstracted, leaving only one to-be-modelled parameter of the maximum value of the eddy-viscosity profile. This parameter follows distinctive rules with spanwise flow scales, based on which a simplified predictive model is constructed. The resolvent modes predicted by the new model exhibit high consistency with SPOD modes, which are essentially comparable to the optimised results for wide ranges of streamwise and spanwise scales.

Modern machine-learning techniques are generally considered data-hungry. However, this may not be the case for turbulence as each of its snapshots can hold more information than a single data file in general machine-learning settings. This study asks the question of whether nonlinear machine-learning techniques can effectively extract physical insights even from as little as a single snapshot of turbulent flow. As an example, we consider machine-learning-based super-resolution analysis that reconstructs a high-resolution field from low-resolution data for two examples of two-dimensional isotropic turbulence and three-dimensional turbulent channel flow. First, we reveal that a carefully designed machine-learning model trained with flow tiles sampled from only a single snapshot can reconstruct vortical structures across a range of Reynolds numbers for two-dimensional decaying turbulence. Successful flow reconstruction indicates that nonlinear machine-learning techniques can leverage scale-invariance properties to learn turbulent flows. We also show that training data of turbulent flows can be cleverly collected from a single snapshot by considering characteristics of rotation and shear tensors. Second, we perform the single-snapshot super-resolution analysis for turbulent channel flow, showing that it is possible to extract physical insights from a single flow snapshot even with inhomogeneity. The present findings suggest that embedding prior knowledge in designing a model and collecting data is important for a range of data-driven analyses for turbulent flows. More broadly, this work hopes to stop machine-learning practitioners from being wasteful with turbulent flow data.

We conduct a numerical study on the drag-reduction mechanism of an opposition- controlled turbulent channel flow from the viewpoint of a symbolic dynamics approach. The effect of the virtual wall formed by the opposition control is maximised at the location of the detection plane $y_d^+ \approx 10$. At this wall-normal location, the local link strength of the self-loop of network nodes representing the negative correlation pattern between the streamwise and wall-normal velocity fluctuations is maximised in the uncontrolled flow. In the controlled case, the multiscale complexity–entropy causality plane and the spatial permutation entropy at $y_d^+ \approx 10$ indicate that the drag-reduction effect is attributed to the reduction of the region where streaks actively coalesce and separate and the suppression of the regeneration cycle in the region near the wall.

We investigate a turbulent stratified plane Poiseuille flow using linear models and nonlinear simulations. We propose the first complete explanation for the prolific and coherent backward (BWs)- and forward-propagating waves (FWs), which have been observed in these flows. We demonstrate a significant presence of oblique waves in the channel core, particularly for the FWs. Critically, we show that neglect of spanwise structure leads to a distorted dispersion relation due to its strong dependence on the angle of obliquity. Interestingly, solutions to the Taylor–Goldstein equations show that wave dynamics is strongly dependent on shear, with only a weak dependence on buoyancy for the BWs at low and order-one wavenumbers, when the wavenumber is scaled by the channel half-height. As the wavenumber increases, waves transition from a shear-dominated regime to a buoyancy-dominated regime, with their dispersion relation tending towards that of idealised internal waves subject to a shear-free and constant-buoyancy-gradient flow, with a characteristic velocity and buoyancy frequency corresponding to respective centreline values in the channel. Finally, we show that the dominance of the BWs arises due to the external forcing of the system, whereby turbulent fluid ejected into the core has a lower momentum when compared with the local flow, therefore preferentially generating BWs in the channel. Qualitatively, channel-core dynamics can be reproduced with low-momentum forcing to a velocity profile with a velocity maximum and a corresponding negative second derivative intersecting a region of strong buoyancy gradient. This structure is inherent to a wide variety of jet-like environmental, atmospheric and industrial flows, suggesting that BWs are a critical control on dynamics of such flows.

We conduct direct numerical simulations (DNS) to study the temporal and spatial developments of the roll waves on a laminar sheet flow of Newtonian fluid. The DNS unveil the physics of the wavefront and show the limitation of the widely used shallow-layer approximations. The most prominent wave, the front runner, is determined by the DNS for the first time in studying the spatial development of the laminar sheet flow with negligible surface tension. Depending on the Froude and Reynolds numbers, the front runner can be a multi-peaked undular bore or a single-peaked non-breaking or breaking wave. The simulation has uncovered an extended region behind the wavefront, where the bed-friction stress is much higher than the corresponding friction in the undisturbed uniform flow. It also produces an uplift velocity needed in the description of wave breaking. For comparison, we also examine the nonlinear development of the instability using two-equation and four-equation shallow-layer models. The two-equation shallow-layer model has produced the bulk of the wave profile but is deficient because it fails to predict the uplift velocity and the substantial increase in bed friction in the frontal region. The four-equation shallow-layer model correctly predicts the bed friction but cannot produce the breaking wave. The simulations also determine the celerity and amplitude of the front runner to follow a linear relationship, qualitatively similar to the roll waves in a turbulent flow.

Particles in pressure-driven channel flow are often inhomogeneously distributed. Two modes of low-Reynolds-number instability, absent in Poiseuille flow of clean fluid, are created by inhomogeneous particle loading, and their mechanism is worked out here. Two distinct classes of behaviour are seen: when the critical layer of the dominant perturbation overlaps with variations in particle concentration, the new instabilities arise, which we term overlap modes. But when the layers are distinct, only the traditional Tollmien–Schlichting mode of instability occurs. We derive the dominant critical-layer balance equations in this flow along the lines done classically for clean fluid. These reveal how concentration variations within the critical layer cause the two particle-driven instabilities. As a result of these variations, disturbance kinetic energy production is qualitatively and majorly altered. Surprisingly, the two overlap modes, although completely different in the symmetry of the eigenstructure and regime of exponential growth, show practically identical energy budgets, highlighting the relevance of variations within the critical layer. The wall layer is shown to be unimportant. We derive a minimal composite theory comprising all terms in the complete equation which are dominant somewhere in the flow, and show that it contains the essential physics. When particles are infinitely dense relative to the fluid, the volume fraction is negligible. But for finite density ratios, the volume fraction of particles causes a profile of effective viscosity. This is shown to be uniformly stabilizing in the present flow. Gravity is neglected here, and will be important to study in the future. So will the transient growth of perturbations due to non-normality of the stability operator, in a quest for the mechanism of transition to turbulence.

The dynamics of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE), turbulence dissipation rate (TDR) and turbulence production rate (TPR) are explored in fully developed turbulent channel flow using direct numerical simulations up to $\textit {Re}_\tau \approx 2000$ with minimal computational box for large-scale structures. Time correlation analysis based on volume-averaged TKE and TDR shows a well-defined average time lag, as in periodic/homogeneous turbulence, which, unlike periodic/homogeneous turbulence, appears to be Reynolds-number-dependent. On the basis of a spatio-temporal correlation analysis, we show that plane-averaged TKE fluctuations in the near-equilibrium region are transported towards both the core and near-wall regions, and are positively correlated with plane-averaged TDR fluctuations there with combined wall-distance and time lags. In the path towards the core region, the wall-distance lag is very close to the time lag multiplied by the friction velocity. The path towards the near-wall region has a wide spread of time lags, which increases with Reynolds number. The spatio-temporal correlation paths both towards the core and towards the wall are reproduced when the reference plane TKE is conditionally averaged on either ejections or sweeps, and are in fact stronger in correlation values in the case of ejections, which are better organised than sweeps. While volume-averaged TPR evidently precedes volume-averaged TKE, a more complex picture of non-local space–time correlations between reference plane TKE and TPR is revealed. A mechanistic model is proposed to elucidate these correlations between TKE and TPR through the interaction between the mean shear and the Reynolds shear stress.

The flow resistance, i.e. friction factor times Reynolds number ($\,f\,{Re}$), of longitudinal-fin heat sinks with or without clearance between a shroud and the tips of the fins is an important parameter in thermal design. This is because it dictates the caloric resistance of the heat sink, i.e. change in bulk temperature of the fluid flowing through it. When there is no clearance and the common and oft-valid assumption of negligible fin thickness is invoked, $f\,{Re}$ corresponds to simply that of a rectangular duct. However, with clearance, only numerical results are available as per the well-known study by Sparrow, Baliga and Patankar (ASME J. Heat Transfer, vol. 100, 1978). We develop analytical formulae for $f\,{Re}$ for fully developed flow with clearance. The exact solution is provided by an integral formula derived via conformal mappings. Additionally, simple formulae are derived via asymptotic expansions in three cases: (1) the fin spacing is small compared to the fin height and clearance; (2) the clearance is small compared to the fin spacing, which is small compared to the fin height; (3) the same as case (2) but valid for larger clearances. The different asymptotic formulae are compared to the exact formula, and together cover almost the entire relevant parameter range (for fin spacing and clearance) with errors of less than 15 %. A formula for the limiting case of no clearance is shown to be more accurate, for any fin spacing, than a widely used correlation from the literature.

Different types of neural networks have been used to solve the flow sensing problem in turbulent flows, namely to estimate velocity in wall-parallel planes from wall measurements. Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are among the most promising methodologies, due to their more accurate estimations and better perceptual quality. This work tackles this flow sensing problem in the vicinity of the wall, addressing for the first time the reconstruction of the entire three-dimensional (3-D) field with a single network, i.e. a 3-D GAN. With this methodology, a single training and prediction process overcomes the limitation presented by the former approaches based on the independent estimation of wall-parallel planes. The network is capable of estimating the 3-D flow field with a level of error at each wall-normal distance comparable to that reported from wall-parallel plane estimations and at a lower training cost in terms of computational resources. The direct full 3-D reconstruction also unveils a direct interpretation in terms of coherent structures. It is shown that the accuracy of the network depends directly on the wall footprint of each individual turbulent structure. It is observed that wall-attached structures are predicted more accurately than wall-detached ones, especially at larger distances from the wall. Among wall-attached structures, smaller sweeps are reconstructed better than small ejections, while large ejections are reconstructed better than large sweeps as a consequence of their more intense footprint.

During the 2018 K$\unicode{x012B}$lauea lower East Rift Zone eruption, lava from 24 fissures inundated more than 8000 acres of land, destroying more than 700 structures over three months. Eruptive activity eventually focused at a single vent characterized by a continuously fed lava pond that was drained by a narrow spillway into a much wider, slower channelized flow. The spillway exhibited intervals of ‘pulsing’ behaviour in which the lava depth and velocity were observed to oscillate on time scales of several minutes. At the time, this was attributed to variations in vesiculation originating at depth. Here, we construct a toy fluid dynamical model of the pond–spillway system, and present an alternative hypothesis in which pulsing is generated at the surface, within this system. We posit that the appearance of pulsing is due to a supercritical Hopf bifurcation driven by an increase in the Reynolds number. Asymptotics for the limit cycle near the bifurcation point are derived with averaging methods and compare favourably with the cycle periodicity. Because oscillations in the pond were not observable directly due to the elevation of the cone rim and an obscuring volcanic plume, we model the observations using a spatially averaged Saint-Venant model of the spillway forced by the pond oscillator. The predicted spillway cycle periodicity and waveforms compare favourably with observations made during the eruption. The unusually well-documented nature of this eruption enables estimation of the viscosity of the erupting lava.

The distribution of stress generated by a turbulent flow matters for many natural phenomena, of which rivers are a prime example. Here, we use dimensional analysis to derive a linear, second-order ordinary differential equation for the distribution of stress across a straight, open channel, with an arbitrary cross-sectional shape. We show that this equation is a generic first-order correction to the shallow-water theory in a channel of large aspect ratio. It has two adjustable parameters – the dimensionless diffusion parameter, $\chi$, and a local-shape parameter, $\alpha$. By assuming that the momentum is carried across the stream primarily by eddies and recirculation cells with a size comparable to the flow depth, we estimate $\chi$ to be of the order of the inverse square root of the friction coefficient, $\chi \sim C_f^{-1/2}$, and predict that $\alpha$ vanishes when the flow is highly turbulent. We examine the properties of this equation in detail and confirm its applicability by comparing it with flume experiments and field measurements from the literature. This theory can be a basis for finding the equilibrium shape of turbulent rivers that carry sediment.

To describe the effects of porous roughness on turbulence, we have carried out direct numerical simulations using the lattice Boltzmann method. The simulated flows are fully developed turbulent flows in channels consisting of a solid smooth top wall and a porous bottom wall with transverse porous ribs whose heights are 10 % of the channel height. The considered ratios of the rib spacing to the rib height are $w/k\simeq 1$ and 9. The Kelvin-cell structure is applied to construct faithfully the porous media whose porosities are $\varphi \ge 0.79$. Three kinds of porous media having different permeabilities are considered. The most permeable one has an approximately one order higher permeability than that of the least permeable one. The higher permeability case is designed to have a pore scale that is the same as the rib height so that it is the most permeable case for the rib roughness with the designed porosity. In the simulations, the bulk Reynolds number is set to $Re_b=5500$, and the corresponding permeability Reynolds numbers are $Re_K=2.2\unicode{x2013}7.5$. The simulated field data and the drag coefficient, which includes both the pressure drag by the ribs and the frictional drag over the porous wall, are analysed to understand the characteristics of the permeable roughness in terms of permeability. The decomposition of the drag coefficient into the integrated laminar, rib-drag, dispersion and turbulence parts elucidates the transition mechanism between the typical d-type to k-type roughness depending on $Re_K$. By the double (time and space) averaged budget equations for the dispersion and Reynolds stresses, we explain how the energy generated by the roughness transfers to turbulence through dispersion resulting in the k-type characteristics. The nominal roughness sublayer thickness and the characteristic roughness height are introduced with the parameters obtained by fitting the velocity data to Best's and Nikuradse's logarithmic velocity formulae. Along with data in the literature, it is suggested that the ratio of the characteristic roughness height to the nominal roughness sublayer thickness becomes constant irrespective of the rib spacing in the full permeable-wall turbulence at $Re_K> 7$.

Helicity plays a key role in the evolution of vortex structures and turbulent dynamics. The helicity dynamics and vortex structures in streamwise-rotating channel turbulence are discussed in this paper using the helicity budget equation and the differentiated second-order structure function equation of helicity. Generally, rotation and Reynolds numbers exhibit opposing effects on the interscale helicity dynamics and the vortices. Under the buffer layer, the positions of the helicity peaks are proportional to the ratio between the Reynolds and rotation numbers. The mechanism is related to the opposing effects of convection and rotation. Rotation directly affects the helicity balance through the Coriolis term and corresponding pressure term. In the buffer layer, the scale helicity is negative at small scales but positive at large scales, which is mainly induced by the spatial effects (the production and the spatial turbulent convection) but reduced by interscale cascades. Examination of structures reveals the close association between scale helicity and streaks, with streak lift angles exhibiting an increase with rotation and a decrease with Reynolds numbers. In the log-law layer, the Coriolis terms and corresponding pressure terms are proportional to the rotation numbers but remain independent of the Reynolds numbers. The negative scale helicity is forward cascaded towards small scales. Generally, spanwise vortices in the log-law layer are related to sweep events and forward cascades. Our findings indicate that these spanwise vortices are suppressed by rotation but recover with increasing Reynolds numbers, aligning with the effects observed in the scale helicity balance.

The characterisation and the modelling of air concentration distributions in self-aerated free-surface flows has been subject to sustained research interest since the 1970s. Recently, a novel two-state formulation of the structure of a self-aerated flow was proposed by Kramer & Valero (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 966, 2023, A37), which physically explains the air concentration through the weak interaction of two canonical flow momentum layers, comprising a turbulent boundary layer and a turbulent wavy layer (TWL). The TWL was modelled using a Gaussian error function, assuming that the most dominant contribution are wave troughs. Here, it is shown that air bubbles form an integral part of the TWL, and its formulation is expanded by adopting a superposition principle of entrapped air (waves) and entrained air (bubbles). Combining the superposition principle with the two-state formulation, an expression for the depth-averaged (mean) air concentration is derived, which allows us to quantify the contribution of different physical mechanisms to the mean air concentration. Overall, the presented concepts help to uncover new flow physics, thereby contributing fundamentally to our understanding of self-aerated flows.

The free-surface channel flow around a square cylinder is analysed, over a wide range of blocking ratios, using three-dimensional simulations. The state of the flow is characterised in terms of the Froude number upstream and downstream of the square cylinder. The simulations confirm the presence of the subcritical and choked states, and provide new insight into the supercritical state and band-gap through an analysis of how the momentum flux varies with Froude number along the channel. The influence of the blocking ratio on the flow state and drag force is analysed and shows the significant rise of drag in the choked regime.
