We present new software to cross-match low-frequency radio catalogues: the Positional Update and Matching Algorithm. The Positional Update and Matching Algorithm combines a positional Bayesian probabilistic approach with spectral matching criteria, allowing for confusing sources in the matching process. We go on to create a radio sky model using Positional Update and Matching Algorithm based on the Murchison Widefield Array Commissioning Survey, and are able to automatically cross-match ~ 98.5% of sources. Using the characteristics of this sky model, we create simple simulated mock catalogues on which to test the Positional Update and Matching Algorithm, and find that Positional Update and Matching Algorithm can reliably find the correct spectral indices of sources, along with being able to recover ionospheric offsets. Finally, we use this sky model to calibrate and remove foreground sources from simulated interferometric data, generated using OSKAR (the Oxford University visibility generator). We demonstrate that there is a substantial improvement in foreground source removal when using higher frequency and higher resolution source positions, even when correcting positions by an average of 0.3 arcmin given a synthesised beam-width of ~ 2.3 arcmin.

Until comparatively recently solar activity was discussed in terms of independent centres around the Sun’s surface. These centres, which form a constantly but slowly changing pattern, were thought to be linked only beneath the photosphere by tangled magnetic fields, themselves dominated by the mechanical energy of mass motions at photospheric and lower levels. Recent discoveries now indicate that active centres interact with one another above photospheric level and especially through linkages within the corona. The linkages appear to be of at least two distinctive kinds: magneto-hydrodynamic shock waves capable of travelling vast distances through the corona at ∼103 km/s and triggering eruptions at distant centres; and magnetic field lines which loop high and wide in the corona and convey energy in the form of fast particles. These two kinds of interaction will be considered in turn.

We monitored the Ca ii H and K lines of HD 179949, a notable star in the southern hemisphere, to observe and confirm previously identified planet induced emission (PIE) as an effect of star–planet interaction. We obtained high resolution spectra (R ∼ 53 000) with a signal-to-noise ratio S/N ≳ 50 in the Ca ii H and K cores during 10 nights of observation at the McDonald Observatory. Wide-band echelle spectra were taken using the 2.7-m telescope. Detailed statistical analysis of Ca ii K revealed fluctuations in the Ca II K core attributable to planet induced chromospheric emission. This result is consistent with previous studies by Shkolnik et al. (2003). Additionally, we were able to confirm the reality and temporal evolution of the phase shift of the maximum of star–planet interaction previously found. However, no identifiable fluctuations were detected in the Ca ii H core. The Al iλ3944 Å line was also monitored to gauge if the expected activity enhancements are confined to the chromospheric layer. Our observations revealed some variability, which is apparently unassociated with planet-induced activity.

On 1973 March 22 a radio event was observed above the east limb of the Sun with the Culgoora radioheliograph operating at both 80 and 160 MHz. The first stage of this event, a type I storm closely associated with a rising prominence, offers a new insight into the nature of this phenomenon. This storm was followed immediately by a moving type IV burst – the first burst of this kind for which two-dimensional observations are available at two frequencies. The relation between these two stages may help explain the ‘missing hour’ in observations of another moving type IV burst known as ‘Westward Ho’.

According to the currently accepted paradigm compact steep spectrum (CSS) sources are precursors of larger/older objects and gigahertz peaked spectrum (GPS) sources may be earlier stages of CSS sources. In this paper we confront this paradigm with the outcome of recent observations of CSS sources that are significantly weaker than those known before. In particular we claim that not all CSS sources must end up as large scale objects; if the activity phase of an AGN's central engine is shorter than the lifetime of a large scale radio source (up to ˜108 yr) the radio source associated with such an AGN decays earlier, e.g. at the CSS stage. We point out that a theory of thermal–viscous instabilities in the accretion disks of AGN may explain many features of radio sources at all stages of their evolution.

We have carried out a study of the neutral hydrogen in the direction of the X-ray source 1E 161348–5055, a compact central object (CCO) located in the interior of the supernova remnant (SNR) RCW 103. The Hi 21 cm line observations were carried out using the Australia Telescope Compact Array, complemented with single dish data from the Parkes radio telescope to recover information at all spatial scales. We derive a distance to RCW 103 of 3.1 kpc, in agreement with previous distance measurements. We have also detected a small hole in the Hi emission which is positionally and kinematically coincident with the location of the CCO which confirms the association between the SNR and the CCO. This is the third case of a depression in Hi emission seemingly associated with CCOs in SNRs. The characteristic parameters of the holes such as their size, eccentricity and evacuated mass are similar in all three cases. We estimate the absorbing HI column density towards 1E 161348–5055 to be ∼6 × 1021 cm–2, a value compatible with a blackbody solution for the CCO X-ray emission. However, the implied temperature and luminosity are very high compared to most neutron stars. Moreover, the strong long-term variability in X-rays favours the hypothesis that 1E 161348–5055 is an accreting binary source rather than an isolated, cooling neutron star. An analysis of the continuum image obtained at 1.4 GHz from these observations shows no trace of a pulsar wind nebula around 1E 161348–5055, in spite of it being a young object.

It is believed that the splitting of the SMC into two fragments and the production of the Inter-Cloud gas and the Magellanic Stream occurred in the one event 4 × 108 years ago. This event was a collision between the LMC and SMC. This time is too short for the Stream to be tidal, or be the result of stripping of the Inter-Cloud gas by a diffuse gaseous halo. It is proposed that the clouds in the Stream are the results of collisions between the Inter-Cloud gas and HVCs in the Galactic halo. A model of this process accounts for all of the observational features of the Stream. Observations of HVCs in the path of the Magellanic Clouds are used to predict the development of the Stream. The HVCs in our halo are thought to be a result of a collision of a galaxy with our Galaxy 6 × 109 years ago.

We carried out light curve solutions of ten detached eclipsing eccentric binaries observed by Kepler. The formal errors of the derived parameters from the light curve solutions are below 1%. Our results give indications that the components of the eccentric binaries (especially those with mass ratios below 0.5) do not follow precisely the empirical relations between the stellar parameters derived from the study of circular-orbit binaries. We found the following peculiarities of the targets: (a) the components of KIC 9474969 have almost the same temperatures while their radii and masses differ by a factor around 2.5; (b) KIC 6949550 reveals semi-regular light variations with an amplitude of 0.004 and a period around 7 d which are modulated by long-term variations; (c) KIC 6220470, KIC 11071207, and KIC 9474969 exhibit tidally induced ‘hump’ around the periastron. These are the targets with the biggest relative radii of our sample. We derived the dependence of the hump amplitude on the relative stellar radii, eccentricity, and mass ratio of eccentric binary consisting of MS stars.

We describe a new low-frequency wideband radio survey of the southern sky. Observations covering 72–231 MHz and Declinations south of $+30^\circ$ have been performed with the Murchison Widefield Array “extended” Phase II configuration over 2018–2020 and will be processed to form data products including continuum and polarisation images and mosaics, multi-frequency catalogues, transient search data, and ionospheric measurements. From a pilot field described in this work, we publish an initial data release covering 1,447 $\mathrm{deg}^2$ over $4\,\mathrm{h}\leq \mathrm{RA}\leq 13\,\mathrm{h}$ , $-32.7^\circ \leq \mathrm{Dec} \leq -20.7^\circ$ . We process twenty frequency bands sampling 72–231 MHz, with a resolution of 2′–45′′, and produce a wideband source-finding image across 170–231 MHz with a root mean square noise of $1.27\pm0.15\,\mathrm{mJy\,beam}^{-1}$ . Source-finding yields 78,967 components, of which 71,320 are fitted spectrally. The catalogue has a completeness of 98% at ${{\sim}}50\,\mathrm{mJy}$ , and a reliability of 98.2% at $5\sigma$ rising to 99.7% at $7\sigma$ . A catalogue is available from Vizier; images are made available via the PASA datastore, AAO Data Central, and SkyView. This is the first in a series of data releases from the GLEAM-X survey.

We describe observations with the Mopra radiotelescope designed to assess the feasibility of the H2O Maser Southern Galactic Plane Survey. We mapped two one-square-degree regions along the Galactic plane using the new 12-mm receiver and the UNSW Mopra spectrometer. We covered the entire spectrum between 19.5 and 27.5 GHz using this setup with the main aim of finding out which spectral lines can be detected with a quick mapping survey. We report on detected emission from H2O masers, NH3 inversion transitions (1,1), (2,2) and (3,3), HC3N (3–2), as well as several radio recombination lines.

The PKSCAT90 database consists of radio and optical data for 8264 radio sources. It covers all the sky south of declination +27 degrees. Most of the galactic plane and the Magellanic Cloud regions are excluded from this catalogue but have been the subject of other specialised surveys. A few data errors in the initial PKSCAT90 version 1.00 released in March 1990 have been corrected in the current version 1.01 edition.

Barium stars are extrinsic Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars. They present the s-enhancement characteristic for AGB and post-AGB stars, but are in an earlier evolutionary stage (main sequence dwarfs, subgiants, red giants). They are believed to form in binary systems, where a more massive companion evolved faster, produced the s-elements during its AGB phase, polluted the present barium star through stellar winds and became a white dwarf. The samples of barium stars of Allen & Barbuy (2006) and of Smiljanic et al. (2007) are analysed here. Spectra of both samples were obtained at high-resolution and high S/N. We compare these observations with AGB nucleosynthesis models using different initial masses and a spread of 13C-pocket efficiencies. Once a consistent solution is found for the whole elemental distribution of abundances, a proper dilution factor is applied. This dilution is explained by the fact that the s-rich material transferred from the AGB to the nowadays observed stars is mixed with the envelope of the accretor. We also analyse the mass transfer process, and obtain the wind velocity for giants and subgiants with known orbital period. We find evidence that thermohaline mixing is acting inside main sequence dwarfs and we present a method for estimating its depth.

The role of radio polarimetry in the understanding of GPS and CSS sources is explored. After an initial discussion of what can be learned from polarimetry, the expectations of a simple evolutionary sequence of GPS/CSO to CSS to FR I/FR II sources are explored. Observational results are then compared with the expectations. Conclusions include: the GPS category is likely not a single homogeneous class of objects; Faraday depth effects are very strong inside the inner 3 kpc of CSS and CSO sources; in at least 3C 138 the Faraday screen has very fine scale (subparsec) structure; and there is evidence for increased ionisation near bends in some CSS jets probably due to jet–ISM interaction. New results on 3C 138, 3C 43, and 3C 454 are given.

Galaxy groups have been under-studied relative to their richer counterparts — clusters. The Group Evolution Multiwavelength Study (GEMS) aims to redress some of the balance. Here we describe the GEMS sample selection and resulting sample of 60 nearby (< 130 Mpc) galaxy groups and our multiwavelength dataset of X-ray, optical, and Hı imaging. ROSAT X-ray images of each group are presented. GEMS also utilizes near-infrared imaging from the 2MASS survey and optical spectra from the 6dFGS. These observational data are complemented by mock group catalogues generated from the latest ΓCDM simulations with gas physics included. Existing GEMS publications are briefly highlighted as are future publication plans.

Multi-frequency observations with the Culgoora radioheliograph (Wild 1967); Sheridan et al. 1973) of five solar bursts of spectral type II (Wild et al. 1954) have now been analysed. The spectra of all five bursts show split-banded harmonic structure. Each type II burst passed through only two of the heliograph’s three observing frequencies (160, 80 and 43.25 MHz). Relationships between the positions, sizes and brightness temperatures of the various sources in each burst are presented and summarized; their implications for the propagation of shock waves and radio waves in the solar corona are briefly discussed.

The literature on the λ Boo stars has grown to become somewhat heterogenous, as different authors have applied different criteria across the UV, optical, and infrared regions to determine the membership status of λ Boo candidates. We aim to clear up the confusion by consulting the literature on 212 objects that have been considered as λ Boo candidates, and subsequently evaluating the evidence in favour of their admission to the λ Boo class. We obtained new spectra of ~ 90 of these candidates and classified them on the MK system to aid in the membership evaluations. The re-evaluation of the 212 objects resulted in 64 members and 103 non-members of the λ Boo class, with a further 45 stars for which membership status is unclear. We suggest observations for each of the stars in the latter category that will allow them to be confidently included or rejected from the class. Our reclassification facilitates homogenous analysis on group members, and represents the largest collection of confirmed λ Boo stars known.

We describe the High-Precision Polarimetric Instrument-2 (HIPPI-2) a highly versatile stellar polarimeter developed at the University of New South Wales. Two copies of HIPPI-2 have been built and used on the 60-cm telescope at Western Sydney University’s (WSU) Penrith Observatory, the 8.1-m Gemini North Telescope at Mauna Kea and extensively on the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT). The precision of polarimetry, measured from repeat observations of bright stars in the SDSS g′band, is better than 3.5 ppm (parts per million) on the 3.9-m AAT and better than 11 ppm on the 60-cm WSU telescope. The precision is better at redder wavelengths and poorer in the blue. On the Gemini North 8-m telescope, the performance is limited by a very large and strongly wavelength-dependent TP that reached 1000’s of ppm at blue wavelengths and is much larger than we have seen on any other telescope.

A cloud monitor has been developed for use with cosmic ray air shower fluorescence detectors, the High Resolution Fly's Eye and the Pierre Auger Observatory. This is based on an infrared thermopile device which, unlike previous such monitors, requires no moving chopper and is suitable for unattended operation over long periods of time.

The large size of the ASKAP Hi surveys DINGO and WALLABY necessitates automated 3D source finding. A performance difference of a few percent corresponds to a significant number of galaxies being detected or undetected. As such, the performance of the automated source finding is of paramount importance to both of these surveys. We have analysed the performance of various source finders to determine which will allow us to meet our survey goals during the DINGO and WALLABY design studies. Here we present a comparison of the performance of five different methods of automated source finding. These source finders are duchamp, gamma-finder, a cnhi finder, a 2d–1d wavelet reconstruction finder and a sigma clipping method (s + c finder). Each source finder was applied to the same three-dimensional data cubes containing (a) point sources with a Gaussian velocity profile and (b) spatially extended model-galaxies with inclinations and rotation profiles. We focus on the completeness and reliability of each algorithm when comparing the performance of the different source finders.

This paper reviews what has been learned about the old stellar population of NGC 5128, the only large elliptical galaxy close enough that we can currently observe individual stars as faint as the horizontal branch. Although its galaxy type is still a matter of debate, the uncertainties over distance are now largely resolved; comparison of five stellar distance indicators gives d= 3.8±0.1 Mpc. The globular cluster system, which was once perplexingly invisible, is now known to be predominantly old with a substantial metal-rich component. The globular cluster system (GCS) total population and luminosity function are normal and the clusters follow the same fundamental plane relation as those in the Milky Way and M31. Finally, the halo out to at least ∼7reff is dominated by metal-rich stars which are also predominantly old, with age and metallicity tantalizingly similar to the majority of globular clusters.
