Flux emergence at different spatial scales and with different amounts of flux has been studied using radiative magnetohydrodynamics (rMHD) simulations. We use the radiative MHD code MURaM to simulate the emergence of an untwisted magnetic flux tube of ephemeral region scale with a density nonuniformity into a background atmosphere with a small unipolar open field. We find that the tube rises to the photosphere, forming complex loop structures seen in synthetic Atmospheric Imaging Assembly(AIA) 171 Å images. The atmosphere reaches 105 K at 3Mm above the surface. Our simulation provides a reference example of a less twisted ephemeral region emergence and the atmospheric response.

The tilt of the bipolar magnetic region (BMR) is crucial in the Babcock-Leighton process for the generation of the poloidal magnetic field in the Sun. We extend the work of Jha et al. (2020) and analyze the recently reported tracked BMR catalogue based on AutoTAB (Sreedevi et al. 2023) from Michelson Doppler Imager (1996–2011) and Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (2010–2018). Using the tracked information of BMRs based on AutoTAB, we confirm that the distribution of Bmax reported by Jha et al. (2020) is not because of the BMRs are picked multiple times at the different phases of their evolution instead it is also present if we consider each BMRs only once. Moreover, we find that the slope of Joy’s law (〈γ0〉) initially increases slowly with the increase of Bmax. However, when Bmax >2.5 kG, γ0 decreases. The decrease of observed γ0 with Bmax provides a hint to a nonlinear tilt quenching in the Babcock-Leighton process.

In the late 80s of the 20th century, Crimean astronomers, studying the structure of transverse magnetic fields in active regions (ARs), discovered signs of the presence of large-scale vertical electric currents – global electric currents (Abramenko, Gopasyuk 1987). In 2018–2020, we finalized and adapted the method for detecting large-scale electric currents to the data of modern instruments for studying the Sun, and began studying their dynamics on time scales of 3–5 days (Fursyak et. al 2020). Our researches carried out during 2020–2023 showed that: 1) Large-scale electric currents with values of the order of ~ 1013 A exist in ARs with nonzero flare activity. 2) Large-scale electric currents extend to the upper layers of the solar atmosphere in one part of the AR, and close through the chromosphere and corona in the remaining part of the AR. This assumption for the AR NOAA 12192 is confirmed by the results of numerical simulations performed in 2016 (Jiang et al. 2016). 3) The greater the magnitude of the large-scale electric current, the higher the probability of occurrence of M- and X- class solar flares in the AR. 4) At the final stages of AR evolution, a nonzero large-scale electric current can have a stabilizing effect on the sunspot, preventing its decay by its own magnetic field. 5) Large-scale electric currents are involved in coronal heating processes. Ohmic dissipation of a large-scale electric current is one of the mechanisms of quasi-stationary heating of coronal plasma above the AR. Our research on large-scale electric currents and the processes in which they take part continues.

Historical sunspot records provide piece by piece more information on solar variability on a centennial scale. In this work, we analyze sunspot observations from the archives of Georg Christoph Eimmart, which is the second-richest data set of the Maunder minimum after the archives of the Paris observatory. Comparing the dates of the blank solar disk from the database by Hoyt & Schatten (1998) with dates of observations at the Eimmart observatory, we find that spotless days reports originate from astrometric observations. A comparison of the observations by La Hire and Müller of 1719 suggests that the observations by La Hire were for astrometric purposes as well, rather than aimed at sunspot counting.

The formation of highly structured, spatially localized complex structures during solar flux emergence facilitates adaptation of topological methods, extending the research of emerging macroscopic MHD fluxes into knots, links and braids. Combining mathematical considerations, remote images and in situ satellite observations at solar vicinity, we construct new characteristics of those braided/knotted magnetic structures, applying Braid and Knot Theory to physical configurations, deducing their topological invariants, constraining the evolution and stability while delineating the relaxation path to magnetized equilibria.

The induction and momentum equations of solar dynamo are simplified to a dynamic system for the convective Root-Mean-Square (rms) velocity and the rms magnetic field in the solar convection zone. The study of stable stationary points of this system gives a minor excess of the critical level of the dynamo and, accordingly, moderate magnetic field typically about 1 T (10 kG). A significantly lower rms magnetic field may be possible at some parameters of the system. The stable rms velocity is about 100 m/sec, and the characteristic magnetic times are about the half-period of solar rotation or about an average lifetime of sunspots. Relative magnetic energy is of order 5 kJ/kg that is about the kinetic energy. The unstable stationary points could be near zero magnetic fields as in periods of very lower solar activity similar to the Maunder minimum.

We investigated chromospheric activities of pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars. First, we studied the Ca II infrared triplet emission lines with Subaru/HDS and other spectroscopic instruments. Most PMS stars have narrow Ca II lines whose intensities are as large as the maximum of the zero-age main-sequence (ZAMS) stars. The chromosphere of PMS stars is suggested to be filled by the Ca II emitting region. Second, we found many faint chromospheric emission lines such as Mg I and Fe I for more than half of the ZAMS stars. Third, we searched the periodic light variation caused by a starspot for the 26 PMS stars. Their TESS light variations and Ca II emission line strengths show the positive correlation, and are located on the extensions of the superflare stars. In summary, PMS stars have very active chromosphere driven by strong dynamo process due to the fast rotation and the long convection timescale.

Observations of super flare occurrence (with energy 1033–1036 erg)s in low mass stars like M dwarfs still remains as a puzzle. In this paper we have inferred the typical sizes and characteristics of magnetic fields associated with active regions in M dwarfs responsible for these super flares. This is done by extrapolation of physical conditions associated with largest solar flares. The average poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields near the surface of selected M dwarfs will be also inferred in this context.

We present a study of the evolution of two types of coronal holes (CHs) in the solar minimum of 24/25, which was preceded by a prolonged minimum of 23/24 and a weak 24 solar cycle. The goal of the study is to clarify whether the behavior of CHs during this period is also unusual? The study is based on the material of observations obtained by SDO/AIA/193. The Heliophysics Events Knowledgebase was used to localize the CHs and calculate their areas. Analysis of the evolution of the areas of polar and non-polar CHs in solar minimum 24/25 revealed a number of features. The hemispheric asymmetry is evident both in solar activity indices and in the localization of maxima of polar and non-polar CH areas. The hemispheric area imbalance is minimal for polar CHs and pronounced in the regions of non-polar CHs and sunspots. This is consistent with the general concept of polar CHs as the main source of the Sun’s dipole magnetic field. The areas of polar CHs significantly exceed the areas of non-polar CHs and make a significant contribution to the total area of all CHs in the solar disk. It is concluded that the dynamics of polar and nonpolar CHs suggests that the 24/25 minimum is rather close to earlier minima than to the 23/24 minimum.

An accurate description of the center-to-limb variation (CLV) of stellar spectra is becoming an increasingly critical factor in both stellar and exoplanet characterization. In particular, the CLV of spectral lines is extremely challenging as its characterization requires highly detailed knowledge of the stellar physical conditions. To this end, we present the Numerical Empirical Sun-as-a-Star Integrator (NESSI) as a tool for translating high-resolution solar observations of a partial field of view into disk-integrated spectra that can be used to test common assumptions in stellar physics.

Solar winds originate from the Sun and can be classified as fast or slow. Fast solar winds come from coronal holes at the solar poles, while slow solar winds may originate from the equatorial region or streamers. Spicules are jet-like structures observed in the Sun’s chromosphere and transition region. Some spicules exhibit rotating motion, potentially indicating vorticity and Alfvén waves. Machine learning and the Hough algorithm were used to analyze over 3000 frames of the Sun, identifying spicules and their characteristics. The study found that rotating spicules, accounting for 21% at the poles and 4% at the equator, play a role in energy transfer to the upper solar atmosphere. The observations suggest connections between spicules, mini-loops, magnetic reconnection, and the acceleration of fast solar winds. Understanding these small-scale structures is crucial for comprehending the origin and heating of the fast solar wind.

This study analyzed the Doppler shift in the solar spectrum using the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). Two types of oscillations were investigated: long period damp and short period damp. The researchers observed periodic perturbations in the Doppler velocity oscillations of bright points (BPs) in the chromosphere and transition region (TR). Deep learning techniques were used to examine the statistical properties of damping in different solar regions. The results showed variations in damping rates, with higher damping in coronal hole areas. The study provided insights into the damping behavior of BPs and contributed to our understanding of energy dissipation processes in the solar chromosphere and TR.

Flares on the Sun are often associated with ejected plasma: these events are known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs). These events, although are studied in detail on the Sun, have only a few dozen known examples on other stars, mainly detected using the Doppler-shifted absorption/emission features in Balmer lines and tedious manual analysis. We present a possibility to find stellar CMEs with the help of high-resolution solar spectra.

A comparative analysis of sub-THz emission of stellar flares from red dwarfs has been carried out. ALMA observations indicate that the sub-THz emission flux from stellar flares with a duration of 10 s is an order of magnitude greater than for solar flares. The sub-THz emission is linearly polarized and decreases with frequency. The degree of polarization can reach tens of percent. We show that these types of spectrum slopes and linear polarization can be caused by the synchrotron emission of ultrarelativistic electrons. The origin of the observed relationships between sub-THz, low frequency radio, and X-ray emissions of stellar flares are discussed.

Coronal rain is formed in the post-impulsive phase of solar flares due to the thermal instability of coronal plasma in EUV loops. As a result, the sub-terahertz (sub-THz) emission flux in the post-impulsive phase of solar flares can be increased due to the increasing of the optical thickness of the thermal source. This suggests that sub-THz observations can be used as a diagnostic tool for coronal rain.

This work is aimed to analyse the relationship between the sub-THz radiation and variations of the temperature and the emission measure of the EUV coronal plasma during the post-impulsive phase of the SOL2022-05-04T08:45 solar flare.

Based on the two-dimensional temperature and emission measure distributions obtained from the AIA/SDO EUV intensity data, it was found that the temperature decreases whereas the emission measure reaches the maximum near the sub-THz flare peak. This circumstance and peculiarities of the radiation time profiles in different wave ranges show evidence in favor of the significant contribution of the thermal coronal loop plasma to the flare sub-THz radiation at least for some flare events. The sub-THz emission may be associated with a coronal condensation, accompanied by the formation of coronal rain.

The origin of the sub-terahertz (sub-THz) component of radio emission from solar flares, which is characterized by the increase flux with frequency in the 100-400 GHz range, is considered. On the basis of equations of 1D non-LTE radiation hydrodynamics we simulated the altitude distribution of the plasma density and temperature inside the flare loop caused by the interaction of non-stationary beam of accelerated electrons in the form of a triangular pulse with the chromospheric plasma. The FLARIX numerical code was used to calculate the dynamics of the flare plasma parameters at different heights which are compared with the RADYN numerical code. We found that the characteristic heights of the formation of sub-THz emission vary over a wide range with time for both codes. The main contribution to the sub-THz emission comes from the chromospheric and transition region plasma with temperatures of 104–105K.

Solar-type stars, including the Sun, have magnetic fields that extend from their interiors to the surface and beyond, influencing both the stellar activity and interplanetary medium. Magnetic activity phenomena, such as coronal mass ejections (CMEs), significantly impacts space weather. These CMEs, composed of plasma clouds with magnetic fields ejected from the stellar corona, pose a potential threat to planets by affecting their magnetosphere and atmosphere. Despite advancements in detecting stellar CMEs, detection remains limited. We focus on understanding CME propagation by analyzing key parameters like position, velocities, and the configuration of stellar magnetic fields. Using spot transit mapping, we reconstruct magnetograms for Kepler-63 and Kepler-411, employing the ForeCAT model to simulate CME trajectories from these stars. Results indicate that CME deflections generally decrease with radial velocity and increase with ejection latitude. Additionally, stars with stronger magnetic fields, such as Kepler-63, tend to cause more significant CME deflections.

Stellar activity depends on multiple parameters one of which is the age of the star. The members of open clusters are good targets to observe the activity at a given age of the stars since their ages are more precisely determined than that of field stars. Choosing multiple clusters, each with different age, gives us insight to the change in activity during the lifetime of stars. With the analysis of these stars we can also refine the parameters of gyrochronology (Barnes 2003), which is a method for estimating the age of low-mass, main sequence stars from their rotation periods.
