State-of-the-art nanopore sequencing enables rapid and real-time identification of novel pathogens, which has wide application in various research areas and is an emerging diagnostic tool for infectious diseases including COVID-19. Nanopore translocation enables de novo sequencing with long reads (> 10 kb) of novel genomes, which has advantages over existing short-read sequencing technologies. Biological nanopore sequencing has already achieved success as a technology platform but it is sensitive to empirical factors such as pH and temperature. Alternatively, ångström- and nano-scale solid-state nanopores, especially those based on two-dimensional (2D) membranes, are promising next-generation technologies as they can surpass biological nanopores in the variety of membrane materials, ease of defining pore morphology, higher nucleotide detection sensitivity, and facilitation of novel and hybrid sequencing modalities. Since the discovery of graphene, atomically-thin 2D materials have shown immense potential for the fabrication of nanopores with well-defined geometry, rendering them viable candidates for nanopore sequencing membranes. Here, we review recent progress and future development trends of 2D materials and their ångström- and nano-scale pore-based nucleic acid (NA) sequencing including fabrication techniques and current and emerging sequencing modalities. In addition, we discuss the current challenges of translocation-based nanopore sequencing and provide an outlook on promising future research directions.

The PA6G blue is a polymeric material for great versatility of engineering applications that required good mechanical and tribological properties such as gears. The focus of this study was to investigate the mechanical properties as well as the friction and wear resistance of a commercial PA6G blue under biodegradable external lubrication, to evaluate its potential use for gear applications. Firstly, the PA6G blue was characterized by FTIR analysis in order to identify the characteristic chemical groups of this polymer. The mechanical characterization was performed by tension and hardness tests according to the standards ASTM D638 and ASTM E10, respectively. Subsequently, friction tests were carried out on a tribometer with pin-on-disk configuration based on the ASTM G99 standard, in dry and lubricated conditions. Natural castor and canola oils were employed as bio-lubricants, as well as their mixture at 50% by volume. The results exhibited that the PA6G blue exhibit good mechanical performance as that required by gear fabrications. Besides, the friction performance showed a low friction coefficient of 0.11 in the dry condition that decreased about 50% in lubricated tests, obtaining a friction coefficient value of 0.054.

Triclosan (TCS) adsorption behavior by a modified zeolite with Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB) was evaluated factoring in pH, contact time, and TCS initial concentration in a batch system. Natural clinoptilolite-type zeolite from Sonora, Mexico was conditioned with a sodium chloride solution, and, subsequently, modified with CTAB. All the zeolites were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Electron Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), and the Zero Point Charge (pHZPC). It was found that the morphological and structural properties of natural zeolite were not affected after treatment with cationic surfactant. Furthermore, adsorption process efficiency was enhanced by the presence of CTAB, obtaining TCS maximum adsorption capacity at an optimal pH of 9.0. In this context, the positively charged surface of the modified zeolite and the anionic triclosan species present were decisive. Kinetics data were well adjusted to a pseudo-second order model with a TCS adsorption capacity of 1.430 ± 0.051 mg g-1 at an equilibrium time of 18 h. Isotherm results were best adjusted to the Langmuir model with a qmax = 2.027 mg g-1 using an initial Co concentration of 18.0 mg L-1, and reaching an equilibrium Ce concentration of 0.559 mg L-1. The mechanism for the adsorption of TCS by CTAB-modified zeolite was proposed to be electrostatic attractions between the group of partial positive charge of CTAB and the anionic species of triclosan. Consequently, CTAB-modified zeolites could be used as effective adsorbents for triclosan removal.

L-Arginine and L-Alanine aminoacids doped ADP crystals were grown from aqueous solution by slow evaporation technique at constant temperature. The crystalline nature of the grown crystals was confirmed using powder X-ray diffraction technique. The vibrational frequencies of the grown crystals were identified using FTIR spectral analysis. Optical absorption study was carried out and a good transparency in the entire visible region was observed with the lower cutoff wavelength of 308 nm and 318 nm for the L-Alanine & L-Arginine doped crystals respectively. The transmission data has been used to evaluate the optical band gap of L-Alanine and L-Arginine doped ADP crystals and is found tobe 5.023 eV. Second harmonic generation (SHG) studies were performed by the classical Kurtz powder technique using a Nd: YAG laser operating at 1064 nm. The SHG efficiency of doped ADP is found to be higher compared to Pure ADP crystals.

Pairs of conjugate donor-acceptor fluorescent probes have proven themselves useful in stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy in recent years. For instance, it has been shown that the lifetime of said probes directly correlates to the resolution of the microscope. However, once the lifetimes of the probes have been optimized, it is desirable to control their fluorescence in order to improve the resolution further. Here, we propose combining model-free control with sliding mode control to track nanosecond pulses of red-shifted acceptor fluorescence in order to inhibit visible light emitted from the image plane, shrink the point spread function, and subsequently improve the resolution of the microscope. This is achieved by automatic adjustment of the STED laser beam pump power. This controller is numerically simulated against a generic model created from Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) theory. However, since it is data-driven, it can be easily applied to various physical systems with drastically different dynamics. This work provides a reliable theoretic control solution to modern super resolution microscopy for biological imaging.

Most of the photochemical activity of bacterial photosynthetic apparatuses occurs in the reaction center, a transmembrane protein complex which converts photons into charge-separated states across the membrane with a quantum yield close to unity, fuelling the metabolism of the organism. Integrating the reaction center from the bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides onto electroactive surfaces, it is possible to technologically exploit the efficiency of this natural machinery to generate a photovoltage upon Near Infra-Red illumination, which can be used in electronic architectures working in the electrolytic environment such as electrolyte-gated organic transistors and bio-photonic power cells. Here, photovoltage generation in reaction center-based bio-hybrid architectures is investigated by means of chronopotentiometry, isolating the contribution of the functionalisation layers and defining novel surface functionalization strategies for photovoltage tuning.

Plasma incineration might be a promising technique for the conditioning of various radioactive waste streams. Assessing the long-term durability of the plasma slag is essential to predict its performance during long-term disposal. In this paper, the stability of six plasma treated surrogate cemented concentrates or resins in a high pH environment is investigated. The slags were crushed (2 different granulometries) and immobilized in a cement matrix, after which samples were submitted to long-term durability tests (stability under water at 20 °C; stability in a high relative humidity environment at 38 °C) and to an accelerated Alkali-Silica-Reaction (ASR) test (1 M NaOH at 80 °C). The first results show that the expansion and strength loss of the cement-slag mixtures remain limited in the test conditions, although differences between the different materials and granulometries could be perceived. No visual damage was observed. Some tests are still ongoing and will last 2 years.

To estimate the cesium sorption by the bentonite and to obtain the isotherms, some batch-adsorption experiments are being carried out, being the Kd (retardation coefficient) calculated from these isotherms. One-dimensional flow cell was constructed to measure the bentonite permeability regarding to a cesium solution, which results will be used to evaluate the diffusion coefficient – D. It will be used the PHREEQC software to model the transport of the cesium radionuclide through this bentonite with the Kd and D data. The modelling of radionuclide transport in the Brazilian materials will contribute to evaluate the efficiency of multi-barriers system of the national repository, because it is one of its safety criteria.

A novel technique providing a cost effective sustainable wet chemical etching method of synthesizing black Moly thin films rapidly has been presented. A top- down method for fabricating MoO3 has been investigated to understand the effect of chemical etchant concentration on the structural, morphological and optical properties of the thin films on Mo substrates. The XRD patterns demonstrated the formation of Tugarinovite MoO2 films on Mo substrate after annealing at 500°C in a vacuum. In this work, we developed nanostructured MoO3 on Mo substrate solar absorber, with a high solar absorptance of over 89%. These results suggest that solar absorbers made from refractory metal oxide nanostructures can be used for solar thermal applications.

Polymer nanocomposites possess unique sets of properties that make them suitable for different applications, including structural and flame-retardant material, electromagnetic wave reflector, sensors, thin film transistor, flexible display, and many more. The properties of these nanocomposite are dependent on nanofiller dispersion and bonding with polymer matrix (i.e. particle-matrix interaction). Thermography is a non-destructive method that may be used to gain insight into dispersion and particle-matrix interaction. Infrared (IR) radiation emitted from these nanomaterial polymer composite depends on the emissivity of the individual components. In addition, during flash heating and cooling, different thermal conductivity of components in the nanocomposite can influence pixel intensity differently in the IR image or video being captured. We have used an economical mid wavelength IR camera Fluke RSE600 equipped with a close-up macro lens and algorithm based on MATLAB image processing toolbox to analyse dispersion, voids and thermal diffusivity of patented graphene polymer nanocomposite materials (G-PMC) in micro-scale. These G-PMCs can act as a standard material to determine the potential of our IR thermography technique due to their homogeneity and lack of impurity due to unique fabrication process. Thermal diffusivity and dispersion of nanoparticles in our G-PMCs was estimated after irradiation with a xenon flash lamp by spatially mapping transient IR radiations from different G-PMCs using the Fluke RSE600 thermal imager. Results from thermography experiments were compared with scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy results. Micro-scale thermography was able to detect millimetre scale thermal diffusivity variation in the injection molded G-PMC samples and relate it to change in dispersion of nanofillers, unlike SEM and Raman, where micro-scale measurements could not determine the reason behind millimetre scale property variation. We believe this low cost, fast, micro-scale, non-destructive technique will provide valuable insight into functional polymer nanocomposite fabrication and corresponding electrical and thermal properties.

This paper presents a recent study on recycling poly-ethylene-tetraphylate (PET), known as plastic waste material in Ghana, to wealth. Composites were produced by heating aggregates together with shredded PET plastic waste material, while bitumen was added to the plastic-coated aggregates. The composites produced were reinforced with 4.5 wt%, 9.0 wt%, 13.6 wt%, and 18.0 wt% PET. Mechanical properties of the fabricated composite samples were studied with a Universal testing machine for optimization. The work demonstrated that shredded PET plastic waste material acts as a strong binding agent for bitumen that can improve on the shelf life of the asphalt. From the results, 13.6 wt% concentration of PET was shown to experience the maximum compressive strength and flexural strength. Besides, water resistance was shown to increase with PET concentrations/weight fraction. From the data characterized 13.6 wt% of PET plastic gives the optimum plastic concentration that enhances the rheological properties of bitumen. The implications of the result are therefore discussed for the use of 13.6 wt% PET in road construction.

Ionic hydrogels are an abundant class of materials with applications ranging from drug delivery devices to high performance concrete to baby diapers. A more thorough understanding of interactions between polyelectrolyte networks and ionic solutes is critical as these materials are further tailored for performance applications in highly targeted ionic environments. In this work, we seek to develop structure-property relationships between polyelectrolyte gels and environments containing high concentrations of multivalent ions. Specifically, this work seeks to elucidate the causes behind differences in hydrogel response to divalent ions of main group metals versus transition metals. PANa-co-PAM hydrogels containing low and high fractions of ionic groups are investigated in solutions of DI water, NaCl, CaCl2, and CuSO4 at concentrations ranging from 5 to 100 mM in order to understand 1) the transient or permanent nature of crosslinks produced in these networks by divalent counter-ions, 2) the role of polymer ionic content in these interactions, and 3) how these interactions scale with salt concentration. Gravimetric swelling and mechanical compression testing are employed to characterize water and salt-swollen hydrogels in order to develop guiding principles to control and manipulate material properties through polymer-counter-ion interactions. The work presented here confirms the formation of permanent crosslinks by transition metal ions, offers explanation for the behavioral discrepancy observed between ionic hydrogels and main group versus transition metal ions, and illustrates how such hydrogel properties scale with counter-ion concentration.

Recent studies have shown spray-pyrolysis is a low-cost, simple and efficient technique for deposition of metal oxide semiconductors (such as zinc oxide) as the active layer of thin-film transistors (TFTs). However, to allow the translation from laboratory scale to industry the reproducibility of such method needs to be evaluated. We present herein a representative study concerning the reproducibility and uniformity of spray-coated ZnO TFTs using several devices, from different production batches, following the same fabrication protocol. We demonstrate that it is possible to obtain transistors with high performance and reproducibility by controlling the most relevant deposition factors, corroborated by a low deviation rate (below 10%) from the characteristic TFT parameters (mobility in saturation, threshold voltage and on/off ratio), which is compatible to commonly available commercial electronic devices.

Herein, we report a methodology that leads to the formation of Ru metallic sites, followed by the development and anchorage of Pt-Ru alloyed nanoparticles on the surface of Ordered Mesoporous Hollow Carbon Spheres (OMHCS). Along with the Ru sites, it is demonstrated that the functionalization promotes the formation of functional groups on the surface of the OMHCS. In a first stage, OMHCS are functionalized with the [(η6-C6H5OCH2CH2OH)RuCl2]2 (Ru-dim) and [(η6-C6H4CH(CH3)2CH3)RuCl2]2 (Ru-cym) organometallic compounds. Afterwards, Pt nanoparticles are dispersed by the microwave-assisted polyol method over the functionalized supports obtaining the low-metal content 5 wt. % Pt/OMHCSRu-dim and Pt/OMHCSRu-cym nanocatalysts. The degree of Ru alloyed is found to be around 35%. The low-Pt content Pt/OMHCSRu-cym and Pt/OMHCSRu-dim exhibit a higher catalytic activity for the Oxygen (OER) and the Hydrogen (HER) Evolution Reactions than the Pt/C benchmark and the Pt/OMHCS nanocatalysts. The overpotential for the OER at 10 mA cm-2 (ηOER) is 300 mV and 210 mV smaller at Pt/OMHCSRu-cym and Pt/OMHCSRu-dim compared to Pt/C, respectively. The corresponding values of the HER at -10 mA cm-2 (ηHER) are 14 and 18 mV smaller, respectively. The high catalytic activity of Pt/OMHCSRu-cym and Pt/OMHCSRu-dim has been attributed in part to the presence of Ru0 and RuO2 species from organometallic functionalization, and the modification of the d-valence band of Pt. Their high performance for the OER and the HER opens new lines of research for the design of nanocatalysts for alkaline electrochemical water splitting.

Biosynthesized Zincite nanoparticles have been successfully demonstrated by a completely green process mediated aqueous extract of rosemary leaves acting as both reducing and stabilizing agents and zinc nitrate hexahydrate as the precursor. The synthesis was free of solvents and surfactants to adhere to green chemistry principles and the impartation of environmental benignity. To achieve our objective, structural and optical investigations of ZnO annealed at 500°C for 2hrs were carried-out using complementary techniques. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) revealed the self-assembled, highly agglomerated quasi-hexagonal shaped NPs and the average particle size was found to peak at 15.62 ± 0.22 nm. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) exhibited several diffraction rings with clear diffraction spots confirming their polycrystallinity and the purity of ZnO NPs with a wurtzite structure. Furthermore, the energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) substantiated the presence of Zn and O in the sample and attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) illustrated the Zn-O chemical bonds. From UV-Vis-NIR, the optical band gap was amounted to 3.2 eV and photoluminescence (PL) emission spectrum to 2.9eV with high surface defects and oxygen vacancies. Through these results, the use of rosemary leaves extract is hereby shown to be a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to synthesize Zincite nanoparticles (ZnO NPs).

Hybrid coatings for cavitation erosion protection of aluminum alloys, have been developed, based on a sol-gel process and applied by the dip coating technique. This work aims to investigate established hybrid sol-gel coatings synthesized using organically modified silicon precursor 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MAPTMS) mixed with zirconium (IV) propoxide. In the present research, the established baseline coatings were modified by adding different concentrations (1%, 1.5% and 2%) of cross-linkable hexamethylenediisocyanate (HMDI) diluted in 60% ethanol. The influences of the amount of crosslinker incorporated into the coatings on abrasion, corrosion and cavitation erosion protection were studied. The hydrophobic nature, thermal and electrochemical properties of the coatings were evaluated using Water Contact Angle (WCA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Open Circuit Potential (OCP) and Potentiodynamic polarization (PDS) techniques. Furthermore, cavitation erosion and abrasion tests were completed on all coatings and rankings of these were produced based on mass loss measurements and derived mean depth of erosion.

In the present study we employ electronic structure calculations (based on Density Functional Theory -DFT approach) and Fully Atomistic Reactive Molecular Dynamics (FARMD) simulations (based on ReaxFF reactive force field) to evaluate the reactivity of branched polyfuran (PF) derivatives and identify promising systems for chemical sensing. Condensed-to-atoms Fukui indexes (CAFI) were employed to identify the most reactive sites on the oligomers structure. The chemical sensing abilities of the most promising systems were evaluated via FARMD simulations in the presence of distinct gaseous compounds. The results indicate the derivatives PF-CCH and PF-NO₂ (i.e. CCH and NO2 as side groups) as the most promising systems for chemical sensor applications, presenting higher reactivity on the most accessible sites. An interesting correspondence between DFT and MD results was also identified, suggesting the plausibility of using CAFI parameters for the identification of improved materials for chemical sensors.
