After revising the order Pertusariales in Tierra del Fuego (Messuti & Vobis 2002), Teuvo Ahti drew my attention to some nomenclatural problems concerning Pertusaria pachythallina (Räsänen) Messuti. This name was based on Pertusaria grisea var. pachythallina Räsänen. However, the new combination was invalidly published since the page of publication was not indicated (Art. 33.3, Ex 5 ICBN 2000) and the lectotypification originally performed by Lamb (in herb.) did not meet the Code requirements (Art. 7.11). The correct nomenclature and typification are indicated below.

Grazing marks from snails are frequently observed in populations of the old forest epiphyte Lobaria pulmonaria. However, grazing marks are more numerous in thalli from deciduous broadleaved forests than in thalli from boreal Picea abies forests, due to higher populations of lichen-feeding molluscs in deciduous stands. Here we tested for deleterious effects of snails on the lichens by transplanting 600 more or less grazed L. pulmonaria thalli from deciduous forests to snail-free P. abies forests. Subsequent measurements showed that growth rates were as high in thalli with many grazing marks as those without, suggesting that growth of mature lobes of L. pulmonaria are not inhibited by the recorded grazing pressure imposed by lichen feeding snails.

The crustose lichen genus Maronea A. Massal (Fuscideaceae) comprises about 12 species worldwide (Kantvilas 2001, 2004). The easily recognized, diagnostic features of this group of lichens are the lecanorine apothecia, Teloschistes-type ascus, and numerous spores per ascus, and these have contributed to a very stable generic concept over the years. As in many genera of lichenized fungi, however, differing species concepts have led to confusion over how many taxa are recognized. Many species, and varieties and forms of Maronea that were described on the basis of minor morphological features have since been synonymized (e.g. Harris 2006; Magnusson 1934).

Lichen growth and regeneration depend on the net photosynthetic production, the lateral allocation of products, on abiotic factors, competition and herbivory, and may therefore vary both in space and time (Hill 1981). Herbivores cause different damage to lichens in response to different thallus structure (surface toughness) and growth form, presence/absence of secondary compounds, and due to herbivore-specific differences in feeding (Lawrey 1984; Fröberg et al. 1993; Baur et al. 1994; Hesbacher et al. 1995). Regeneration of artificially damaged lichen tissue has been investigated in detail, for example in Xanthoria parietina (L.) Th. Fr. (Honegger 1996; Honegger et al. 1996). However, quantitative assessments of the regenerative capacity of thalli damaged by herbivores are so far lacking. Damage to lichens by grazing gastropods is made by highly specialized radulae and can therefore not be imitated by any mechanical treatment (Baur et al. 2000). Herbivory by snails also involves the production of saliva and mucus, which both could affect lichen regeneration.

Lichens are colourful organisms owing to numerous combinations of algal and fungal pigments (as reviewed by Rikkinen 1995). Colour is often used in taxonomic studies to aid species identification but it is sometimes over-used as a characteristic to discriminate related genera such as, Xanthoparmelia and Neofuscelia (Poelt & Leuckert 1993). However, colour variations within species can be significant (Solhaug et al. 2003) because of spatial (Gauslaa & Solhaug 2001; Gauslaa & Ustvedt 2003) and temporal variations (Gauslaa & McEvoy 2005) in environmental factors. There are few experimental studies on lichen colours so far; as a result we do not know the relative importance of genetic versus environmental factors. Our study aimed to assess the effect of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on the colour of the widespread foliose lichen Xanthoparmelia stenophylla (Ach.) Ahti & D. Hawksw. (until recently known as X. somloensis (Gyeln.) Hale, see Ahti & Hawksworth 2005). Usnic acid is responsible for the yellowish appearance of its upper cortex, but other colour variations are also mentioned in taxonomic literature (Brodo et al. 2001). More specifically, we wanted to discover if UVR and the photosynthate ribitol supplied by the photobiont would cause changes in pigmentation in a Xanthoparmelia species. These factors have been shown to induce and stimulate the synthesis of the orange parietin in Xanthoria parietina (Solhaug & Gauslaa 2004; Solhaug et al. 2003).
