A gyrokinetic Coulomb collision operator is derived, which is particularly useful to describe the plasma dynamics at the periphery region of magnetic confinement fusion devices. The derived operator is able to describe collisions occurring in distribution functions arbitrarily far from equilibrium with variations on spatial scales at and below the particle Larmor radius. A multipole expansion of the Rosenbluth potentials is used in order to derive the dependence of the full Coulomb collision operator on the particle gyroangle. The full Coulomb collision operator is then expressed in gyrocentre phase-space coordinates, and a closed formula for its gyroaverage in terms of the moments of the gyrocentre distribution function in a form ready to be numerically implemented is provided. Furthermore, the collision operator is projected onto a Hermite–Laguerre velocity space polynomial basis and expansions in the small electron-to-ion mass ratio are provided.

We present three-dimensional direct numerical simulations and an analytic model of reflection-driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in the solar wind. Our simulations describe transverse, non-compressive MHD fluctuations within a narrow magnetic flux tube that extends from the photosphere, through the chromosphere and corona and out to a heliocentric distance $r$ of 21 solar radii $(R_{\odot })$. We launch outward-propagating ‘$\boldsymbol{z}^{+}$ fluctuations’ into the simulation domain by imposing a randomly evolving photospheric velocity field. As these fluctuations propagate away from the Sun, they undergo partial reflection, producing inward-propagating ‘$\boldsymbol{z}^{-}$ fluctuations’. Counter-propagating fluctuations subsequently interact, causing fluctuation energy to cascade to small scales and dissipate. Our analytic model incorporates dynamic alignment, allows for strongly or weakly turbulent nonlinear interactions and divides the $\boldsymbol{z}^{+}$ fluctuations into two populations with different characteristic radial correlation lengths. The inertial-range power spectra of $\boldsymbol{z}^{+}$ and $\boldsymbol{z}^{-}$ fluctuations in our simulations evolve toward a $k_{\bot }^{-3/2}$ scaling at $r>10R_{\odot }$, where $k_{\bot }$ is the wave-vector component perpendicular to the background magnetic field. In two of our simulations, the $\boldsymbol{z}^{+}$ power spectra are much flatter between the coronal base and $r\simeq 4R_{\odot }$. We argue that these spectral scalings are caused by: (i) high-pass filtering in the upper chromosphere; (ii) the anomalous coherence of inertial-range $\boldsymbol{z}^{-}$ fluctuations in a reference frame propagating outwards with the $\boldsymbol{z}^{+}$ fluctuations; and (iii) the change in the sign of the radial derivative of the Alfvén speed at $r=r_{\text{m}}\simeq 1.7R_{\odot }$, which disrupts this anomalous coherence between $r=r_{\text{m}}$ and $r\simeq 2r_{\text{m}}$. At $r>1.3R_{\odot }$, the turbulent heating rate in our simulations is comparable to the turbulent heating rate in a previously developed solar-wind model that agreed with a number of observational constraints, consistent with the hypothesis that MHD turbulence accounts for much of the heating of the fast solar wind.

The analytical solution in toroidal coordinates of the Grad Shafranov equation has been at the origin of the tokamak breakthrough in the fusion development. Unfortunately, the standard toroidal coordinates have a circular poloidal section, which does not fit the elongated cross-section of the present tokamak experiments. In axisymmetry, the vacuum Grad Shafranov equation coincides with the Laplace equation for the toroidal component of the vector potential. In the present paper the solutions for the Laplace equation and that for the vacuum Grad Shafranov equation are tackled in the elliptical prolate toroidal cap-cyclide coordinates framework. The following report of the geometrical properties and of the metric of these coordinates allows us to work out the analytical solution of both equations in terms of the Wangerin functions.

The use of radio frequency (RF) waves in fusion plasmas for heating, for non-inductive current generation, for profile control and for diagnostics has been well established. The RF waves, excited by antenna structures placed near the wall of a fusion device, have to propagate through density fluctuations at the plasma edge. These fluctuations can modify the properties of the RF waves that propagate towards the core of the plasma. A full-wave electromagnetic computational code ScaRF based on the finite difference frequency domain (FDFD) method has been developed to study the effect of density turbulence on RF waves. The anisotropic plasma permittivity used in the scattering studies is that for a magnetized, cold plasma. The code is used to study the propagation of an RF plane wave through a modulated, spatially periodic density interface. Such an interface could arise in the edge region due to magnetohydrodynamic instability or drift waves. The frequency of the plane wave is taken to be in the range of the electron cyclotron frequency. The scattering analysis is applicable to ITER-like plasmas, as well as to plasmas in medium sized tokamaks such as TCV, ASDEX-U and DIII-D. The effect of different density contrasts across the interface and of different spatial modulations are discussed. While ScaRF is used to study a periodic density fluctuation, the code is general enough to include different varieties of density fluctuations in the edge region – such as blobs and filaments, and spatially random fluctuations.

We have combined global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the solar wind and magnetosphere interaction with an implicit particle-in-cell simulation (PIC) and used this approach to model magnetic reconnection at both the dayside magnetopause and in the magnetotail plasma sheet. In this approach, we first model the magnetospheric configuration driven by the solar wind using the MHD simulation. At a time of interest (usually when a thin current sheet has formed in the MHD simulation), we load a large particle-in-cell simulation with plasma and fields based on the MHD state. We use the MHD results to set the boundary conditions on the PIC simulation. The coupling between the two models is one way – the PIC results do not change the MHD results. In these calculations, we use the UCLA global MHD code and the iPic3D implicit particle-in-cell code. In this paper we describe this technique in detail. As an example of this approach, we present PIC results on reconnection in the magnetotail during a magnetospheric substorm.

Stellarator configurations with reactor relevant energetic particle losses are constructed by simultaneously optimizing for quasisymmetry and an analytically derived metric ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}_{c}$), which attempts to align contours of the second adiabatic invariant, $J_{\Vert }$ with magnetic surfaces. Results show that with this optimization scheme it is possible to generate quasihelically symmetric equilibria on the scale of ARIES-CS which completely eliminate all collisionless alpha particle losses within normalized radius $r/a=0.3$. We show that the best performance is obtained by reducing losses at the trapped–passing boundary. Energetic particle transport can be improved even when neoclassical transport, as calculated using the metric $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}_{\text{eff}}$, is degraded. Several quasihelically symmetric equilibria with different aspect ratios are presented, all with excellent energetic particle confinement.

This paper discusses a detailed computational analysis that illustrated the influences of the magnetic field and external potential on the performance of a high-temperature Hall-effect electric thruster. Uniform and non-uniform magnetic field configurations were examined. The Lorentz force in the $x$ direction, acting on the plasma, was shown to substantially enhance the flow velocity in the non-uniform magnetic field, which indicated that the non-uniform magnetic field was more suitable for Hall-effect electromagnetic acceleration. The static temperature increased with the external potential, especially near the region of cathode. This increment in gas temperature, together with the effect of the Lorentz force, results in the enhancement of the velocity at the front and back of the cathode. However, the Mach number and gas density decreased due to static temperature increases caused by the conversion of more electric power into internal energy. The thrust increased eventually with the increase of the average exit velocity.

A spatio-temporal measurement showing the volumetric nature of the phase synchronization of a naturally occurring dust acoustic wave to an external modulation and the relaxation from the driven wave mode back to the naturally occurring wave mode (phase desynchronization) is presented. It is shown that the phase synchronization and desynchronization occur behind a propagating synchronization/desynchronization front that travels at a slower speed than the phase velocity of the wave and that the speed of this synchronization/desynchronization front decreases with increasing neutral gas pressure. It is also observed that volume of the wave that is synchronous depends on the frequency of the external modulation and the neutral gas pressure.

Dust vortices with a void at the centre are reported in this paper. The role of the spatial variation of the plasma potential in the rotation of dust particles is studied in a parallel plate glow discharge plasma. Probe measurements reveal the existence of a local potential minimum in the region of formation of the dust vortex. The minimum in the potential well attracts positively charged ions, while it repels the negatively charged dust particles. Dust rotation is caused by the interplay of the two oppositely directed ion drag and Coulomb forces. The balance between these two forces is found to play a major role in the radial confinement of the dust particles above the cathode surface. Evolution of the dust vortex is studied by increasing the discharge current from 15 to 20 mA. The local minimum of the potential profile is found to coincide with the location of the dust vortex for both values of discharge currents. Additionally, it is found that the size of the dust vortex as well as the void at the centre increases with the discharge current.

The dynamics of electron-plasma waves is described at arbitrary collisionality by considering the full Coulomb collision operator. The description is based on a Hermite–Laguerre decomposition of the velocity dependence of the electron distribution function. The damping rate, frequency and eigenmode spectrum of electron-plasma waves are found as functions of the collision frequency and wavelength. A comparison is made between the collisionless Landau damping limit, the Lenard–Bernstein and Dougherty collision operators and the electron–ion collision operator, finding large deviations in the damping rates and eigenmode spectra. A purely damped entropy mode, characteristic of a plasma where pitch-angle scattering effects are dominant with respect to collisionless effects, is shown to emerge numerically, and its dispersion relation is analytically derived. It is shown that such a mode is absent when simplified collision operators are used, and that like-particle collisions strongly influence the damping rate of the entropy mode.

The work described in this article was carried out to investigate how permanent magnets (PM) affect the plasma confinement and ion beam properties in an inductively coupled plasma which expands from a helicon source. The cylindrical plasma device Njord has a 13 cm long and 20 cm wide stainless steel port connecting the source chamber and the diffusion chamber. The source chamber has an axial magnetic field produced by two coils, with magnetic field lines expanding into the diffusion chamber. Simulations have shown that the field lines leaving the edge of the source hit the port wall, causing a loss of electrons in this section. In the experiments performed in this work, PMs were added around the port walls near the exit of a plasma source and the effect was investigated experimentally by means of a retarding field energy analyser probe. The plasma potential, ion density and ion beam parameters were estimated, and the results with and without the PMs were compared. The results showed that the plasma density in the centre can in some cases be doubled, and the density at the edges of the plasma increased significantly with PMs in place. Although the plasma potential was slightly affected, and the beam velocity dropped by ${\sim}$10 %, the ion beam flux increased by a factor of 1.5.

To explain the possible destabilization of a two-dimensional magnetic equilibrium such as the near-Earth magnetotail, we developed a kinetic model describing the resonant interaction of electromagnetic fluctuations and bouncing electrons trapped in the magnetic bottle. A small-$\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}$ approximation (i.e., the plasma pressure is lower than the magnetic pressure) is used in agreement with a small field line curvature. The linearized gyro-kinetic Vlasov equation is integrated along the unperturbed particle trajectories, including cyclotron and bounce motions. The dispersion relation for drift-Alfvèn waves is obtained through the plasma quasi-neutrality condition and Ampere’s law for the parallel current. It has been found that for a quasi-dipolar configuration ($\text{L}\sim 8$ corresponds to the set of the Earth’s magnetic field lines, crossing the Earths magnetic equator at 8 Earth radii), unstable electromagnetic modes may develop in the current sheet with a growth rate of the order of a few tenths of a second provided that the typical scale of density gradient slope responsible for the diamagnetic drift effects is over one Earth radius or less. This instability growth rate is large enough to destabilize the current sheet on time scales of 2–4 minutes as observed during substorm onset.

Addition of multispecies impurity ions to the total-f gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code XGCa is reported, including a cross-verification of neoclassical physics against the NEO code. This new version of the neoclassical gyrokinetic code XGCa is used to benchmark and confirm the previous reduced-equation-based prediction that high-$Z$ impurity particles in the Pfirsch–Schlüter regime can exhibit a significant level of up–down poloidal asymmetry, through the large parallel friction force, and thus influence the radial plasma transport significantly. The study is performed in a plasma with weak toroidal rotation. In comparison, when the impurity particles are in the plateau regime, the up–down poloidal asymmetry becomes weak, with the parallel friction force becoming weaker than the parallel viscous force. It is also found that the linearization of the perturbed distribution function, based on the small poloidal asymmetry assumption, can become invalid. Using the numerical data from XGCa, each term in the parallel fluid force-balance equation have been analysed to find that both the main ions and the electrons respond to the poloidal potential variation adiabatically when the high-$Z$ tungsten possesses large poloidal variation.

We derive a dispersion relation for the damping of acoustic waves in equi-molar deuterium–tritium (DT) gas due to radiation coupling and electron thermal conduction and discuss its significance for inertial confinement fusion (ICF) targets with high-Z shells surrounding a central DT fuel region. As the shell implodes around DT fuel in such a target, shocks and waves are transmitted through the DT gas. If the shell is perturbed due to drive non-uniformity or manufacturing imperfection, these shocks and waves may be perturbed as well, and can potentially re-perturb the shell. This can complicate calculation of shell stability and implosion asymmetry and in general make the target less robust against implosion non-uniformity. Damping of perturbations in DT gas can alleviate these complications. Also, damping of low-order modes, which is primarily due to radiation coupling, can drive the DT gas to an isobaric and isothermal ‘equilibrium’ configuration during ignition. We find that for the range of common ignition temperatures in targets with high-Z shells, $2.5\lesssim T_{ig}\lesssim 3.5$  keV, damping of low-order modes is significant for areal densities ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}r$) in the broad range of $0.6\lesssim \unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}r\lesssim 1.8~\text{g}~\text{cm}^{-2}$. This suggests it is advantageous to design these targets to achieve areal densities at ignition within this range. Furthermore, we derive a simple constraint between areal density and temperature, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}r=0.34T_{o}$ where $T_{o}$ is in keV, such that DT gas undergoing equilibrium ignition is optimally robust against non-uniformity.

The plasma model used in a recent paper by Kamalam et al. (J. Plasma Phys., vol. 84, 2018, 905840406) assumes a Boltzmann description for two hot ion species, in the presence of two adiabatic (fluid) electron species, for the study of obliquely propagating acoustic-type nonlinear solitary waves with respect to a static magnetic field. We argue that the assumption of Boltzmann distributions for the hot ions is incorrect, thus invalidating their conclusions, in particular about the possible occurrence of supersolitons in magnetized plasmas.

Wave dispersion in a pulsar plasma is discussed emphasizing the relevance of different inertial frames, notably the plasma rest frame ${\mathcal{K}}$ and the pulsar frame ${\mathcal{K}}^{\prime }$ in which the plasma is streaming with speed $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}_{\text{s}}$. The effect of a Lorentz transformation on both subluminal, $|z|<1$, and superluminal, $|z|>1$, waves is discussed. It is argued that the preferred choice for a relativistically streaming distribution should be a Lorentz-transformed Jüttner distribution; such a distribution is compared with other choices including a relativistically streaming Gaussian distribution. A Lorentz transformation of the dielectric tensor is written down, and used to derive an explicit relation between the relativistic plasma dispersion functions in ${\mathcal{K}}$ and ${\mathcal{K}}^{\prime }$. It is shown that the dispersion equation can be written in an invariant form, implying a one-to-one correspondence between wave modes in any two inertial frames. Although there are only three modes in the plasma rest frame, it is possible for backward-propagating or negative-frequency solutions in ${\mathcal{K}}$ to transform into additional forward-propagating, positive-frequency solutions in ${\mathcal{K}}^{\prime }$ that may be regarded as additional modes.

Thousands of gyrokinetic papers have been published since the introduction of the gyrokinetic change of variables. The intent here is not to review the field, but rather the goal is to present a tutorial providing insight into why gyrokinetics is an appropriate description of turbulent transport. The focus is on turbulent transport in axisymmetric tokamaks, but many of the ideas and techniques are applicable to stellarators and other magnetic fusion devices with nested surfaces of constant pressure. Besides the origins of gyrokinetics and recent insights, gyrokinetic orderings and gyrokinetic variables are summarized. Then a compact, but careful, derivation of the simplest electrostatic gyrokinetic equation for tokamaks is presented, along with a brief mention of gyrokinetics for stellarators. The advantages of assuming scale separation between the finer spatial scales and faster time variation of the turbulence and the global behaviour and slow temporal evolution of the background are stressed. Moreover, the procedure for removing the adiabatic or Maxwell–Boltzmann response is emphasized. Scale separation allows the near Maxwellian behaviour of the background and the rapid variation of the turbulence to be described by separate, local gyrokinetic equations. The turbulent fluctuations are found by solving the nonlinear gyrokinetic equation for the non-adiabatic portion of the fluctuating distribution function. Also, generalizations of the gyrokinetic equation so that it retains electromagnetic and flow modifications are considered in detail along with some symmetry properties. In addition, ambipolarity, particle transport and heat transport are addressed, along with a discussion of the complications associated with describing momentum transport and profile evolution.

We show analytically that for $\unicode[STIX]{x1D704}$-profiles similar to the one of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D704}$ is the rotational transform of the equilibrium magnetic field, a highly conducting toroidal plasma is unstable to kinetically mediated pressure-driven long-wavelength reconnecting modes, of the infernal type. The modes are destabilized either by the electron temperature gradient or by a small amount of current, depending on how far from unity the average value of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D704}$ is, which is assumed to be slowly varying. We argue that, for W7-X, a broad mode with toroidal and poloidal mode numbers $(n,m)=(1,1)$ can be destabilized due to the strong geometric side-band coupling of the resonant kinetic electron response at locations where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D704}$ is rational for harmonics that belong to the mode family of the $(n,m)=(1,1)$ mode itself. In many regimes, the growth rate is insensitive to the plasma density, thus it is likely to persist in high performance W7-X discharges. For a peaked electron temperature, with a maximum of $T_{e}=5~\text{keV}$, larger than the ion temperature, $T_{i}=2.5~\text{keV}$, and a density $n_{0}=10^{19}~\text{m}^{-3}$, instability is found in regimes which show plasma sawtooth activity, with growth rates of the order of tens of kiloHertz. Frequencies are either electron diamagnetic or of the ideal magnetohydrodynamic type, but sub-Alfvénic. The kinetic infernal mode is thus a good candidate for the explanation of sawtooth oscillations in present-day stellarators and poses a new challenge to the problem of stellarator reactor optimization.

Alpha particle confinement is a serious concern in stellarators and provides strong motivation for optimizing magnetic field configurations. In addition to the collisionless confinement of trapped alphas in stellarators, excessive collisional transport of the trapped alpha particles must be avoided while they tangentially drift due to the magnetic gradient (the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D735}B$ drift). The combination of pitch angle scatter off the background ions and the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D735}B$ drift gives rise to two narrow boundary layers in the trapped region. The first is at the trapped–passing boundary and enables the finite trapped response to be matched to the vanishing passing response of the alphas. The second layer is a region that encompasses the somewhat more deeply trapped alphas with vanishing tangential $\unicode[STIX]{x1D735}B$ drift. Away from (and between) these boundary layers, collisions are ineffective and the alpha $\unicode[STIX]{x1D735}B$ drift simply balances the small radial drift of the trapped alphas. As this balance does not vanish as the trapped–passing boundary is approached, the first collisional boundary layer is necessary and gives rise to $\surd \unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$ transport, with $\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$ the collision frequency. The vanishing of the tangential drift results in a separate, somewhat wider boundary layer, and significantly stronger superbanana plateau transport that is independent of collisionality. The constraint imposed by the need to avoid significant energy depletion loss in the slowing down tail distribution function sets the allowed departure of a stellarator from an optimal quasisymmetric configuration.

The $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}f$-PIC method is widely used for electrostatic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. Its basic idea is the ansatz $f=f_{0}+\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}f$ ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}f$-ansatz) where the particle distribution function $f$ is split into a usually time-independent background $f_{0}$ and a time-dependent perturbation $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}f$. In principle, it can also be used for electromagnetic gyrokinetic PIC simulations, but the required number of markers can be so large that PIC simulations become impractical. The reason is a decreasing efficiency of the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}f$-ansatz for the so-called ‘Hamiltonian formulation’ using $p_{\Vert }$ as a dynamic variable. As a result, the density and current moment of the distribution function develop large statistical errors. To overcome this obstacle we propose to solve the potential equations in the symplectic formulation using $v_{\Vert }$ as a dynamic variable. The distribution function itself is still evolved in the Hamiltonian formulation which is better suited for the numerical integration of the parallel dynamics. The contributions from the full Jacobian of phase space, a finite velocity sphere of the simulation domain and a shifted Maxwellian as a background are considered. Special care has been taken at the discretisation level to make damped magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) mode simulations within a realistic gyrokinetic model feasible. This includes devices like e.g. large tokamaks with a small aspect ratio.
