Perovskite solar cells are promising for realizing high power conversion efficiency (PCE) with low manufacturing costs, but efficient coating methods are needed for commercialization. Here, a gas blowing method was used to fabricate perovskite solar cells and was found to create a smooth perovskite layer and to prevent voids in large-area cells, when organic materials were used as scaffolds for forming the perovskite. A PCE of 13% in a 1 cm2 active area is achieved by tuning the band-gap energy of MAPbX3 via substitution of Br for I ions in X sites. Incorporation of a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) hole transport layer with a higher work function increased the open circuit voltage of the solar cells. All layers of the cells were fabricated at low temperatures (<140 °C), which makes it possible to incorporate a polymer substrate for producing flexible solar cells and high-throughput fabrication.

The NiAl matrix composite coatings containing silver and molybdenum were prepared by atmospheric plasma spraying and their tribological properties were investigated in details from 25 to 900 °C. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), micro-Raman, scanning election microscopy (SEM) and transmission election microscopy (TEM) were used to analyze the composition and microstructure of composite coatings. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) results shown that molybdenum and silver were exist in single-phase, but not alloyed in composite coatings. The addition of silver could effectively improve the tribological properties of composite coatings at the wide range of temperature. The silver, nickel and molybdenum could occur the tribo-chemical reaction and form silver molybdates and nickel molybdates lubricating films inside the wear track of composite coatings at high temperature. The friction process promoted the formation of the silver molybdates. The silver molybdates, nickel molybdates and NiO were the main components in composite coatings at high temperature, which could effectively improve tribological properties of composite coatings.

Although the strong coupling of polarization to spontaneous strain in ferroelectrics would impart a flux-closure with severe disclination strains, recent studies have successfully stabilized such a domain via a nano-scaled multi-layer growth. Nonetheless, the detailed distributions of polarizations in three-dimensions (3D) and how the strains inside a flux closure affect the structures of domain walls are still less understood. Here we report a 3D polarization texture of a 4-fold flux closure domain identified in tensile strained ferroelectric PbTiO3/SrTiO3 multilayer films. Ferroelectric displacement analysis based on aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopic imaging reveals highly inhomogeneous strains with strain gradient above 107/m. These giant disclination strains significantly broaden the 90° domain walls, while the flexoelectric coupling at 180° domain wall is less affected. The present observations are helpful for understanding the basics of topological dipole textures and indicate novel applications of ferroelectrics through engineering strains.

A novel stainless steel porous twisted wire material (PTWM) is made of twisted short wires by compaction followed by vacuum high-temperature solid-phase sintering. The twisted short wires are fabricated by using a self-developed rotary multicutter tool to cut stainless steel wire ropes. The PTWMs with 46–70% porosities have been investigated in terms of porous structures and Charpy impact behavior. The PTWMs with spatial composite intertexture structures exhibit interconnected open-pore microstructures with a variety of shapes and sizes. The pore size distributions became convergent with decreasing porosities. The span of pore distribution of the PTWM with a diameter of 90 μm was half than that of the PTWM with a diameter of 160 μm under 65–66% porosity. The impact toughness of the former is 2.6 times than that of the latter. By increasing the porosity from 46 to 70%, the impact toughness decreases from 17.9 to 9.1 J/cm2. Macroscopically integral failure-morphologies of the PTWMs present mixed ductile–brittle failure mechanisms, but microscopic impact deformation and failure mechanisms mainly show the ductile failure and fracture of pore skeletons. The PTWMs demonstrate complex energy absorption mechanisms.

The effects of minor Cu (0–0.29 wt%) and Mg (0–0.1 wt%) additions on the microstructure, electrical conductivity, mechanical, and creep properties of 8xxx aluminum conductor alloys were studied. The microstructure evolution was investigated using an optical microscope and the electron backscattered diffraction technique. The creep property was characterized by the primary creep strain and the minimum creep rate during creep deformation. The results demonstrated that additions of minor Cu and Mg reasonably improved the ultimate tensile strength but slightly reduced electrical conductivity. The addition of Cu remarkably decreased the primary creep strain but had a negligible effect on the minimum creep rate, leading to a beneficial effect on the short-term creep resistance but no advantage to the creep resistance under the long-term creep process. The minor addition of Mg greatly reduces both the primary creep strain and minimum creep rate, resulting in a significant and effective improvement in the creep resistance.

Aluminum matrix composites were prepared by powder processing route containing three different loadings of graphene nanoplatelets, i.e., 1 wt%, 3 wt%, and 5 wt%. Ball milling of composite powders was performed to ensure the uniform dispersion of nanoplatelets in aluminum powder, followed by their consolidation to near theoretical densities. Microstructural evolution after composite preparation was witnessed by X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, while the mechanical property profile was evaluated by hardness, compression, and flexural tests. The mechanical properties of composites containing 5 wt% nanoplatelets were found with maximum improvements in hardness, compression, and flexural strengths of 35%, 433%, and 283%, respectively. This increase in mechanical performance is related to uniform dispersion and microstructural development in composites by incorporating nanoplatelets. Fractographic characterization indicated a change in fracture morphology from matrix-dominant in pure aluminum to nanoplatelet-dominant in composites. In particular, shearing and pull out of nanoplatelets were observed during the fracture of composites with simultaneous restricted plastic deformation of the surrounding aluminum matrix.

A new rapid and energy saving method for the obtention of high performance nanoparticles and thin films of Nb2O5 by microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis is reported. The hydrothermal treatment of a sol–gel precursor solution in a microwave oven at 180 °C for 20 min was enough to obtain amorphous nanoparticles with average sizes of 40 nm. The calcination promotes the formation of different phases of Nb2O5 (TT and T) with pseudohexagonal and orthorhombic structure, respectively, that transform at higher temperatures in a mixture of orthorhombic and monoclinic phases. Crystalline phase composition was found to have a significant influence on the photocatalytic activity. The best photocatalytic performance was observed for the material mainly constituted by the TT-Nb2O5 phase. Thin films constituted by the TT phase were prepared by dip-coating. Photocatalytic experiments confirmed the high photocatalytic activity of this material, which showed a kinetic curve similar to that of a reference TiO2-P25 thin film.

The propagation of a pre-existing center crack in single crystal tungsten under cyclic loading was examined by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations at various temperatures. The results indicated that the deformation mechanism and fracture behavior at crack tip were differences for variously oriented cracks. The [001](010) crack propagated as the form of the formation of slip, while the deformation mechanisms of [10−1](101) crack were blunting voids at 300 K. At higher temperature, many more slip systems were activated resulting in the change of mode of crack propagation. Simulated results showed that the effect of temperature on deformation mechanism and fracture behavior of [001](010) crack was more sensitive than that of [10−1](101) crack. Meanwhile, the influence of a 5〈310〉{110} model grain boundary (GB) on crack propagation was also discussed. Detailed analysis showed that the grain boundary resisted the crack growth by changing the deformation mechanisms and the path of crack propagation at crack tip before the crack reached the grain boundary, and had an important influence on the crack growth rate.

Besides the high spatial resolution achieved in aberration-corrected scanning transmission microscopy, beam-induced dynamic effects have to be considered for quantitative chemical characterization on the level of single atomic columns. The present study investigates the influence of imaging conditions in an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope on the beam-induced atomic migration at a complex Ag-segregated, nanofaceted Cu grain boundary. Three distinct imaging conditions including static single image and serial image acquisition have been utilized. Chemical information on the Ag column occupation of single atomic columns at the grain boundary was extracted by the evolution of peak intensity ratios and compared to idealized scanning transmission electron microscopy image simulations. The atomic column occupation is underestimated when using conventional single frame acquisition due to an averaging of Ag atomic migration events during acquisition. Possible migration paths for the beam-induced atomic motion at a complex Cu grain boundary are presented.

The size and strain-rate dependence of plastic deformation in Au microspheres of diameter ranging from 0.8 to 6.0 µm was investigated at room-temperature using flat-punch micro-compression testing. The contact yield stress was observed to increase with decreasing microsphere diameter. The apparent activation volume, V*, associated with the rate dependent plastic deformation remained essentially constant between 4 and 6b 3 for 0.8 and 1.0 µm spheres over strains up to 20% whereas it increased from 12 to 42b 3 for the larger 3.0 and 6.0 µm diameter specimens. The initiation of plastic deformation within the microspheres was also found to be highly dependent upon sphere diameter and strain rate with associated V*, and apparent activation energy, Q*, values of 0.4b 3 and 0.02 eV for 0.8 µm diameter spheres increasing to 4.1b 3 and 0.16 eV for 6.0 µm diameter spheres. These values indicate that initial plasticity is controlled by heterogeneous nucleation events that are consistent with a surface self-diffusion mechanism.

The origin of the extraordinary strengthening of the highly alloyed austenitic stainless steel Sanicro 25 during cyclic loading at 700 °C was investigated by the use of advanced scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Along with substantial change of the dislocation structure, nucleation of two distinct populations of nanoparticles was revealed. Fully coherent Cu-rich nanoparticles were observed to be homogeneously dispersed with high number density along with nanometer-sized incoherent NbC carbides precipitating on dislocations during cyclic loading. Probe-corrected high-angle annular dark-field STEM imaging was used to characterize the atomic structure of nanoparticles. Compositional analysis was conducted using both electron energy loss spectroscopy and high spatial resolution energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. High-temperature exposure-induced precipitation of spatially dense coherent Cu-rich nanoparticles and strain-induced nucleation of incoherent NbC nanoparticles leads to retardation of dislocation movement. The pinning effects and associated obstacles to the dislocation motion prevent recovery and formation of the localized low-energy cellular structures. As a consequence, the alloy exhibits remarkable cyclic hardening at elevated temperatures.

Effect of Ce addition on electric conductivity of Al alloys is investigated in this paper. Addition of proper amount of Ce leads to a remarkable improvement of electric conductivity. Adding Ce enhances the formation of binary, ternary, or quaternary compounds of Ce, Si, Fe, and Al and reduces the solution content of Fe and Si in the Al solution accordingly, well consistent with the Al lattice constant calculations and the Bragg models. Density of state adjacent to Fermi level of Al–Ce solution is obviously different from other solute atoms involving in La, Fe, and Si etc. and fairly similar with that of pure Al. Two possible contributions of Ce lead to the remarkable improvement of conductivity. First, Ce addition alleviates the lattice static distortion of Al solution and hence expands the average electrical free path. Second, Ce-induced alteration of electron energy band structure may intensify the effective electron number that participates conduction.

The solidification microstructure, types of eutectic borocarbides, heat treatment properties and wear resistance of steel with x wt% B–0.4 wt% C–6.0 wt% Cr–4.0 wt% Mo–1.0 wt% Al–1.0 wt% Si–1.0 wt% V–0.5 wt% Mn (x = 1.0, 2.0, 3.0) have been investigated in this present study. The results indicate that the as-cast Fe–B–C alloy steel consists of pearlite, ferrite, and borocarbides M2(B,C) (M = Fe, Cr, Mo, V, Mn). After quenching or quenching and tempering treatment, ferrite and pearlite transform into martensite. With the increase of boron content, the macrohardness of alloys increases obviously while wear loss decreases. Borocarbides with chromium addition have good toughness and no cracks are observed on worn surfaces. The wear mechanism changes from micro-cutting accompanied with the spalling of borocarbides to single micro-cutting with the boron content rising.

We report on the growth and characterization of molecular mixed thin films of α-sexithiophene (6T), a well-known organic p-type semiconductor with high hole mobility, together with its perfluorinated counterpart, the so far rarely studied tetradecafluoro-α-sexithiophene (PF6T). Pure and blended thin films of these two molecules with different mixing ratios were grown on silicon oxide in ultrahigh vacuum by coevaporation. The effect of perfluorination and mixing on crystal structure, morphology, electronic, and optical properties was examined. The evolution of the PF6T crystal structure was followed in situ in real time by X-ray scattering. We found a new thin film structure different from the reported bulk phase with molecules either standing-up or lying-down depending on the growth temperature. The different morphologies of pure films and blends were investigated with atomic force microscopy. The impact of mixing on the core-levels and on the highest occupied molecular orbitals of 6T and PF6T is discussed.

Integration of photonic devices on silicon (Si) substrates is a key method in enabling large scale manufacturing of Si-based photonic–electronic circuits for next generation systems with high performance, small form factor, low power consumption, and low cost. Germanium (Ge) is a promising material due to its pseudo-direct bandgap and its compatibility with Si-CMOS processing. In this article, we present our recent progress on achieving high quality germanium-on-silicon (Ge/Si) materials. Subsequently, the performance of various functional devices such as photodetectors, lasers, waveguides, and sensors that are fabricated on the Ge/Si platform are discussed. Some possible future works such as the incorporation of tin (Sn) into Ge will be proposed. Finally, some applications based on a fully monolithic integrated photonic–electronic chip on an Si platform will be highlighted at the end of this article.

Indentation relaxation test is investigated from theoretical and experimental points of view. Analytical expressions are derived based on the conical indentation of a homogeneous linear viscoelastic half space. Two loading kinetics prior to the hold displacement segment are studied—i.e., constant displacement rate and constant strain rate. Effects of loading procedure on measured relaxation behavior are considered. It is pointed out that a constant strain rate loading is required to perform depth-independent relaxation measurements and the strain rate affects the relaxation spectrum up to a critical time constant. Few experiments on poly(methyl methacrylate) are then performed to check the consistency of the analytical results. Some experimental limitations are also discussed. Good agreement is found between analytical calculations and experimental measurement trends, especially for the constant strain rate loading effect on the measured relaxation behavior.

This study describes results from mechanical tests conducted on magnesium single crystals in comparison with polycrystalline magnesium. It was found by impact testing that the magnesium single crystal is highly ductile due to energy absorption by twinning and slip, while the polycrystalline samples fracture easily upon impact. Compressive testing along two orthogonal directions at low plastic strains was also performed. The microstructure studies by electron backscatter diffraction and XRD pole figure analysis revealed profuse ( $10\overline12$ ) twinning when compression is done along the growth plane (72 16 $\overline {88}$ 62). The twinning and interaction between different twin modes resulted in incipient recrystallization at strains as low as 8% at room temperature. Compression along the nearly orthogonal plane (2 2 $\bar{4}$ 15) was marked by a much lower degree of both twinning and recrystallization. The variation in microstructural response with the orientation of loading allows for a wide range for tailoring mechanical properties of pure magnesium single crystals without any need of alloying.

Surface texture was prepared on the ASTM1045 steel substrate before spraying. Three texturing patterns (groove pattern, square pattern, and hexagon pattern) were acquired by laser processing to investigate the influence of texturing patterns on the adhesion strength of sprayed coatings. The Ni60 coatings were prepared on the textured surface by atmosphere plasma spraying technology. Scanning electron microscopy and laser 3D microscope were used to characterize the morphology of texturing. The adhesion strength between coating and substrate was examined by the tensile test. Image pro plus software was used to calculate the contact area ratio of the textured substrate. The results show that the texturing processed substrates by laser radiation present plain area between two dimples and the protrusion around texturing, and the contact area between coating and substrate is increased. The adhesion strength of coatings with a groove pattern, a square pattern, and a hexagon pattern is 58, 33, and 47 MPa, respectively. The adhesion strength of sprayed coatings varies with the change of the texturing pattern, and it does not only depend on the contact area ratio but also on the texturing density and the texturing microstructure.

Al–Zn–Mg–Cu–Zr alloys are very important aeronautical materials because of their low density, high strength, and high ductility. Corrosion failure is a significant factor causing aviation accidents, which should be investigated to develop an aeronautical material but has not been done yet. In this work, the effects of aging mechanisms on the exfoliation corrosion behavior of a spray deposited Al–Zn–Mg–Cu–Zr alloy were investigated. Natural aging (NA), single-stage aging (SA), and retrogression and re-aging (RRA) were treated on specimens before exfoliation corrosion testing. Corrosion attacks were evaluated using the optical microscope (OM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Corrosion mechanisms were deduced on the basis of polarization curve results and an equivalent circuit. The RRA sample exhibited the smallest corrosion attack among the three samples, while the NA sample showed the largest corrosion attack. Intergranular corrosion on grain boundaries was discussed to understand the exfoliation corrosion process in the RRA sample. The amount and size of precipitates in grain interior and grain boundary of RRA samples are larger than those in SA and NA samples, leading to the low corrosion susceptibility of the RRA sample.
