Advances in Archaeological Practice is moving to a new open access publication model.

We’re delighted to announce that all articles accepted for publication in Advances in Archaeological Practice from August 23, 2024 will be ‘open access’; published with a Creative Commons licence and freely available to read online. The costs of open access publication will be covered through agreements between the publisher and the author’s institution, payment of APCs for those with third-party funding, or else waived entirely, ensuring every author can publish and enjoy the benefits of OA. 

Please see the journal's Open Access Options page for instructions on how to request an APC waiver.

Authors may choose any of the six Creative Commons licences when publishing Gold Open Access in this journal. See this FAQ for more information.

With Curiosity, Creativity, and Care: Student Authors in Advances

In this new collection for SAA 2025 Denver, we share articles lead-authored by students who have advanced archaeological practice in their work as undergraduate and graduate students. Their theses and dissertations have been places to try new technologies in the lab and field, to develop new methodologies, and to consider their positionality as they note the challenges of diversity and inequity in the discipline and seek to find a just path to the future.
