Primary tillage is in many cases crucial for successful crop establishment and weed and pest control. Inversion tillage using a mouldboard plough may be required when a uniform ploughing operation covering the entire field is preferred. The ploughing operation is especially challenging at the interface area between headlands and the main cropping area. Overlapping at the interface causes a mixing of the topsoil, rather than a soil inversion, and poor burial of residues and weeds, especially of concern in organic farming. The aim of the research was to study novel plough section control designs to optimise the interface area. Concept designs with hydraulic control were studied and the preferred was developed and tested in real field operations. The research concluded that the concept was functional and by visual inspection the interface was optimised. In addition, the section control can improve operations in irregularly shaped fields.

The Society of Precision Agriculture Australia Inc. (SPAA) is recognised as a leading, grower driven farming group in Australia. As an organisation it provides programs and services to its members and wider industry to promote the development and adoption of Precision Agriculture (PA) technologies as a means of enhancing the profitability and sustainability of agricultural production systems. This is achieved through publishing Australia’s only PA-dedicated magazine, delivering field days, seminars and conducting on-farm PA demonstrations and experiments. SPAA provides farmers with an independent source of advice on new concepts and equipment. The grains industry was the springboard for initial adoption, with winegrapes, horticulture and the sugar industry the focus sectors for further expansion. The purpose of this paper is to share the SPAA experience with a view to assisting the development of similar organisations in other countries

This experiment aimed to assess the effect of different indoor winter growth rates (WGR) followed by different concentrate supplementation levels at pasture on meat quality of 90 bulls. During the first winter, bulls were offered grass silage ad libitum and either 3 kg (WGR3) or 6 kg (WGR6) of concentrates. After turn-out to pasture, bulls were offered: grass without supplementation (PO), grass plus 0.2 predicted dry matter intake (DMI) as concentrates (PL) or grass plus 0.4 predicted DMI as concentrates (PH). After finishing, colour, chemical composition (unaged), instrumental texture and sensory characteristics (14 days of ageing) of longissimus thoracis were measured. WGR6 bulls had heavier carcasses than WGR3 bulls. There was an interaction between WGR and supplementation for instrumental texture and redness (a). Within WGR3, PO beef was the most tender, whereas within WRG6, PL was the most tender. However, these differences were not detected by the sensory panel. Within WGR3, redness was the lowest for PL, whereas within WRG6, PO was the least red. No differences were found for chemical composition. The multivariate analysis highlighted WGR as the main variable affecting meat quality characteristics. In conclusion, variations in growth path exerted minor effects on appearance and instrumental texture which did not affect the perception of bull beef by a trained sensory panel.

Next to dry matter (DM) intake, nutritional factors cause considerable variation in methane (CH4) emitted and nitrogen (N) excreted per kg of DM intake or per kg of milk. Rumen function in particular determines CH4 emission and concomitant (amount and site) of N excretion, including the trade-offs between them with changes in nutrition and cow characteristics. Quantification of the interaction between CH4 and N emission hence requires quantification of effects on rumen function in particular. The models available to quantify CH4 emission require the same types of input. The detail of questions posed determines the choice of model and the required level of detail of model inputs needed to investigate mitigation measures and the interaction between CH4 and N emission for a specific farming case. Simulation results with a mechanistic model of enteric fermentation confirmed a profound impact of nutritional measures on both CH4 and N emission, but also demonstrated that nutritional measures to mitigate N excretion can be associated with an increase in CH4 emission. This result demonstrates the need to consider details on the rumen level when the aim is to quantify accurately the net effect on greenhouse gas emission for a specific case studied, which contrasts with applying generic values. As an alternative to models of quantification, on-farm measurement of emission might be pursued by sampling of excreta and air. The principle problem is that concentrations are measured which not necessarily reflect daily rates. Milk production rate is recorded on-farm however, which makes indicators based on milk composition just as promising candidates to estimate CH4 (milk fat) or N (milk urea) emission, provided bias by variation in milk composition unrelated to CH4 and N emission rate can be prevented.

The project “FArming Tools for external nutrient Inputs and water Management” (FATIMA, H2020-SFS2) is developing satellite-based methodologies and information to support effective and efficient water and nitrogen input recommendations in agricultural production. This paper focuses on nitrogen recommendation for winter cereals in Austria and presents preliminary findings from the 2015/16 crop growing season. The Nitrogen Nutrition Index was applied using an empirical relationship to derive dry mass from Leaf Area Index (LAI) and %Na from a chlorophyll index. Results showed a very high correlation between LAI and above ground dry mass (R2=0.95) but a lower correlation between the chlorophyll index and %Na (R2=0.24). Despite various indices tested, the relationship to estimate %Na remains weak. Additional field data and research are needed to further study this aspect.

In strawberry production, a balanced and accurate irrigation schedule is essential, because of the high sensitivity of strawberry plants to water deficits and waterlogging. The optimal irrigation management strategy can, however, only be obtained by an accurate crop monitoring system. To replace the current visual inspection methods, which are subjective, time consuming and labour-intensive, the performance of the COmpact hyperSpectral Imaging system (COSI) mounted on an RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) was evaluated. The study, focusing on different irrigation treatments in strawberry cultivation, unraveled the potential of the COSI system, to monitor field variations, even at small scale. Growth inhibition and differences in plant physiology due to water deficit could be detected. As such, the COSI system has shown potential for steering irrigation management decisions in strawberry cultivation.

The main goal of this study was assessing the technological and agronomic performances of a centre pivot Variable Rate Irrigation (VRI) system. The study was conducted in 2015 on a 16-ha field cultivated with maize. Irrigation was scheduled in three Management Zones according to data provided by a real-time monitoring system based on an array of soil moisture sensors. First results demonstrated the potential benefits of the VRI system on irrigation performance however a multiyear comparison is requested for evaluating the response to climate variability. VRI resulted in yields comparable to the business-as-usual regime but through a noticeable reduction in irrigation volumes.

The paper proposes a geostatistical framework to solve the issues of heterogeneous support for spatial estimation. Apparent soil electrical conductivity (ECa) was measured in a field cropped with San Marzano tomato using a multiple frequency electromagnetic profiler with 6 operating frequencies. Mixed support kriging was used to estimate ECa taking into account the change of support. The method includes punctual kriging with the error being the dispersion variance associated with each frequency. The individual ECa maps were weighted by the dispersion variance to obtain a map which was used for field partition in management zones.

A field study was carried out to investigate the seasonal variations in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) water use efficiency (WUE) using Eddy Covariance (EC) measured CO2 and H2O fluxes, aiming at optimizing the use of irrigation water under hyper arid conditions. The EC system used for this study was installed on a center pivot-irrigated 50 ha alfalfa field. Results revealed that the net EC estimated CO2 uptake ranged from 65,00 kg ha−1 (in winter) to 21,500 kg ha−1 (in summer). While, H2O flux was 4,147 m3 ha−1 (in winter) and 20,157 m3 ha−1 (in summer). This resulted in an estimated alfalfa WUE of 1.57 and 1.07 kg m−3 for winter and summer seasons, respectively. However, the actual WUE of harvested alfalfa was calculated at 0.70 and 0.71 kg m−3 for winter and summer, respectively. Therefore, attaining an actual crop WUE of 33–55% lower than the EC measurement (i.e. more water losses were due to leaching and deep-percolation processes, as the EC system could only estimate evapotranspiration over agricultural fields) emphasizes the need of precision irrigation practices, which will enable farmers to apply irrigation water and agrochemicals more precisely and site-specifically to match soil and plant status and needs.

The Darwin theory of evolution by natural selection is based on three principles: (a) variation; (b) inheritance; and (c) natural selection. Here, I take these principles as an excuse to review some topics related to the future research prospects in Animal Breeding. With respect to the first principle I describe two forms of variation different from mutation that are becoming increasingly important: variation in copy number and microRNAs. With respect to the second principle I comment on the possible relevance of non-mendelian inheritance, the so-called epigenetic effects, of which the genomic imprinting is the best characterized in domestic species. Regarding selection principle I emphasize the importance of selection for social traits and how this could contribute to both productivity and animal welfare. Finally, I analyse the impact of molecular biology in Animal Breeding, the achievements and limitations of quantitative trait locus and classical marker-assisted selection and the future of genomic selection.
