The map from the New York City Directory on the following page shows the compact area of lower Manhattan where most residences, businesses, and public institutions were located at the time of Lawrie Todd's arrival and during the years when he establishes his store and starts a family. The spaces to the north were rapidly developed in the following decades. Among the places identified on the map key are the three churches (Trinity, St. George’s, and the New Dutch Church) Todd sees from the ship upon his arrival. The area at the tip jutting between the rivers is the battery, a park where Rebecca, Todd's first wife, takes morning walks. Todd lives and works mainly in the grid of streets between Broad Way and the East River in the second and third wards (political divisions with elected aldermen). Directories or registers, which began to be issued annually in 1786, listed the names and titles of elected officials, the names, addresses, and occupations of all residents, and other civic information.
The second map shows the route taken by Lawrie Todd when he moved out of New York City to settle in Babelmandel.
