Summary

The four basic processes that comprise nociception – transduction, transmission, modulation, and perception – involve an array of complex events, many of which are only partially understood. A solid grasp of these processes is necessary to understand currently available anesthetic and analgesic options, as well as contribute to the development of novel strategies for treating pain.
