Focusing on late antique Gaul, the chapter analyses texts in Latin about how ascetics in the West sought out the wilderness experience in local forests, mountains, and islands. It argues that these narratives combine self-marginalisation, cultural and social critique, intense emotion and devotion, and an interiorisation of the wilderness with ideas of wildlands as an access point to sacred power and fertility, without idealising its destruction.
