Chapter 9 analyses the wilderness narratives that proliferate in Christian asceticism in late antiquity from the fourth century CE onwards. Focusing on the Greek text Historia monachorum in Aegypto, the chapter argues that it, as a form of wilderness travel writing, offered touristic, armchair consumption from afar, stimulated fascination and awe, and connected the wilderness to ideas of a radical transformation of the self.
