This series is devoted to significant topics or themes that have wide application in mathematics or mathematical science and for which a detailed development of the abstract theory is less important than a thorough and concrete exploration of the implications and applications. Books in The Encyclopedia of Mathematics and Its Applications cover their subject comprehensively. Less important results may be summarized as exercises at the ends of chapters. For technicalities, readers can be referred to the bibliography, which is expected to be comprehensive. As a result, volumes are encyclopedic references or manageable guides to major subjects.

  • The approach to quantum field theory in this book is part way between building a mathematical model of the subject and presenting the mathematics that physicists actually use. It starts with the need to combine special relativity and quantum mechanics and culminates in a basic understanding of the standard model of electroweak and strong interactions. The book is divided into five parts: 1. Canonical quantization of scalar fields; 2. Weyl, Dirac and vector fields; 3. Functional integral quantization; 4. The standard model of the electroweak and strong interactions; 5. Renormalization. This should be a useful reference for anybody with interests in quantum theory and related areas of function theory, functional analysis, differential geometry or topological invariant theory.

  • This book covers most of the known results on reducibility of polynomials over arbitrary fields, algebraically closed fields and finitely generated fields. Results valid only over finite fields, local fields or the rational field are not covered here, but several theorems on reducibility of polynomials over number fields that are either totally real or complex multiplication fields are included. Some of these results are based on recent work of E. Bombieri and U. Zannier (presented here by Zannier in an appendix). The book also treats other subjects like Ritt's theory of composition of polynomials, and properties of the Mahler measure, and it concludes with a bibliography of over 300 items. This unique work will be a necessary resource for all number theorists and researchers in related fields.

  • This book is a comprehensive study of the Radon transform, which operates on a function by integrating it over hyperplanes. The book begins with an elementary and graphical introduction to the Radon transform, tomography and CT scanners, followed by a rigorous development of the basic properties of the Radon transform. Next the author introduces Grassmann manifolds in the study of the k-plane transform (a version of the Radon transform) which integrates over k-dimensional planes rather than hyperplanes. The remaining chapters are concerned with more advanced topics, such as the attenuated Radon transform and generalized Radon transforms defined by duality of homogeneous spaces and double fibrations. Questions of invertibility and the range of the Radon transform are dealt with and inversion formulas are developed with particular attention to functions on L2 spaces and some discussion of the case of Lp spaces.

  • Polynomial equations have been long studied, both theoretically and with a view to solving them. Until recently, manual computation was the only solution method and the theory was developed to accommodate it. With the advent of computers, the situation changed dramatically. Many classical results can be more usefully recast within a different framework which in turn lends itself to further theoretical development tuned to computation. This first book in a trilogy is devoted to the new approach. It is a handbook covering the classical theory of finding roots of a univariate polynomial, emphasising computational aspects, especially the representation and manipulation of algebraic numbers, enlarged by more recent representations like the Duval Model and the Thom Codification. Mora aims to show that solving a polynomial equation really means finding algorithms that help one manipulate roots rather than simply computing them; to that end he also surveys algorithms for factorizing univariate polynomials.

Well-Posed Linear Systems

  • Many infinite-dimensional linear systems can be modelled in a Hilbert space setting. Others, such as those dealing with heat transfer or population dynamics, need to be set more generally in Banach spaces. This is the first book dealing with well-posed infinite-dimensional linear systems with an input, a state, and an output in a Hilbert or Banach space setting. It is also the first to describe the class of non-well-posed systems induced by system nodes. The author shows how standard finite-dimensional results from systems theory can be extended to these more general classes of systems, and complements them with new results which have no finite-dimensional counterpart. Much of the material presented is original, and many results have never appeared in book form before. A comprehensive bibliography rounds off this work which will be indispensable to all working in systems theory, operator theory, delay equations and partial differential equations.

  • This is an up-to-date and integrated introduction to model theory, designed to be used for graduate courses (for students who are familiar with first-order logic), and as a reference for more experienced logicians and mathematicians. Model theory is concerned with the notions of definition, interpretation and structure in a very general setting, and is applied to a wide variety of other areas such as set theory, geometry, algebra (in particular group theory), and computer science (e.g. logic programming and specification). Professor Hodges emphasises definability and methods of construction, and introduces the reader to advanced topics such as stability. He also provides the reader with much historical information and a full bibliography, enhancing the book's use as a reference.

  • An interval is a natural way of specifying a number that is specified only within certain tolerances. Interval analysis consists of the tools and methods needed to solve linear and nonlinear systems of equations in the presence of data uncertainties. Applications include the sensitivity analysis of solutions of equations depending on parameters, the solution of global nonlinear problems, and the verification of results obtained by finite-precision arithmetic. In this book emphasis is laid on those aspects of the theory which are useful in actual computations. On the other hand, the theory is developed with full mathematical rigour. In order to keep the book self-contained, various results from linear algebra (Perron-Frobenius theory, M- and H- matrices) and analysis (existence of solutions to nonlinear systems) are proved, often from a novel and more general viewpoint. An extensive bibliography is included.

  • This book provides a comprehensive presentation of geometric results, primarily from the theory of convex sets, that have been proved by the use of Fourier series or spherical harmonics. An important feature of the book is that all necessary tools from the classical theory of spherical harmonics are presented with full proofs. These tools are used to prove geometric inequalities, stability results, uniqueness results for projections and intersections by hyperplanes or half-spaces and characterisations of rotors in convex polytopes. Again, full proofs are given. To make the treatment as self-contained as possible the book begins with background material in analysis and the geometry of convex sets.   • This 2003 book presents min-max methods through a study of the different faces of the celebrated Mountain Pass Theorem (MPT) of Ambrosetti and Rabinowitz. The reader is led from the most accessible results to the forefront of the theory, and at each step in this walk between the hills, the author presents the extensions and variants of the MPT in a complete and unified way. Coverage includes standard topics, but it also covers other topics covered nowhere else in book form: the non-smooth MPT; the geometrically constrained MPT; numerical approaches to the MPT; and even more exotic variants. Each chapter has a section with supplementary comments and bibliographical notes, and there is a rich bibliography and a detailed index to aid the reader. The book is suitable for researchers and graduate students. Nevertheless, the style and the choice of the material make it accessible to all newcomers to the field.

  • Abstract regular polytopes stand at the end of more than two millennia of geometrical research, which began with regular polygons and polyhedra. They are highly symmetric combinatorial structures with distinctive geometric, algebraic or topological properties; in many ways more fascinating than traditional regular polytopes and tessellations. The rapid development of the subject in the past 20 years has resulted in a rich new theory, featuring an attractive interplay of mathematical areas, including geometry, combinatorics, group theory and topology. Abstract regular polytopes and their groups provide an appealing new approach to understanding geometric and combinatorial symmetry.   • Asymptotics and Mellin-Barnes Integrals, first published in 2001, provides an account of the use and properties of a type of complex integral representation that arises frequently in the study of special functions typically of interest in classical analysis and mathematical physics. After developing the properties of these integrals, their use in determining the asymptotic behaviour of special functions is detailed. Although such integrals have a long history, the book's account includes recent research results in analytic number theory and hyperasymptotics. The book also fills a gap in the literature on asymptotic analysis and special functions by providing a thorough account of the use of Mellin-Barnes integrals that is otherwise not available in other standard references on asymptotics.

  • This book aims to bridge the gap between practising mathematicians and the practitioners of turbulence theory. It presents the mathematical theory of turbulence to engineers and physicists, and the physical theory of turbulence to mathematicians. The book is the result of many years of research by the authors to analyse turbulence using Sobolev spaces and functional analysis. In this way the authors have recovered parts of the conventional theory of turbulence, deriving rigorously from the Navier–Stokes equations what had been arrived at earlier by phenomenological arguments. The mathematical technicalities are kept to a minimum within the book, enabling the language to be at a level understood by a broad audience. Each chapter is accompanied by appendices giving full details of the mathematical proofs and subtleties.   • The book provides a general introduction to the theory of large deviations and a wide overview of the metastable behaviour of stochastic dynamics. With only minimal prerequisites, the book covers all the main results and brings the reader to the most recent developments. Particular emphasis is given to the fundamental Freidlin-Wentzell results on small random perturbations of dynamical systems. Metastability is first described on physical grounds, following which more rigorous approaches to its description are developed. Many relevant examples are considered from the point of view of the so-called pathwise approach. The first part of the book develops the relevant tools including the theory of large deviations which are then used to provide a physically relevant dynamical description of metastability. Written to be accessible to graduate students, this book provides an excellent route into contemporary research.

  • Information content and programming semantics are just two of the applications of the mathematical concepts of order, continuity and domains. The authors develop the mathematical foundations of partially ordered sets with completeness properties of various degrees, in particular directed complete ordered sets and complete lattices. Uniquely, they focus on partially ordered sets that have an extra order relation, modelling the notion that one element 'finitely approximates' another, something closely related to intrinsic topologies linking order and topology. Extensive use is made of topological ideas, both by defining useful topologies on the structures themselves and by developing close connections with numerous aspects of topology. The theory so developed not only has applications to computer science but also within mathematics to such areas as analysis, the spectral theory of algebras and the theory of computability.
