An Introduction to Contact Topology

  • This text on contact topology is a comprehensive introduction to the subject, including recent striking applications in geometric and differential topology: Eliashberg's proof of Cerf's theorem via the classification of tight contact structures on the 3-sphere, and the Kronheimer-Mrowka proof of property P for knots via symplectic fillings of contact 3-manifolds. Starting with the basic differential topology of contact manifolds, all aspects of 3-dimensional contact manifolds are treated in this book. No background in algebraic topology is assumed; the reader need only have taken the standard first courses in real analysis, abstract algebra, and point-set topology.   • Geometric control theory is concerned with the evolution of systems subject to physical laws but having some degree of freedom through which motion is to be controlled. This book describes the mathematical theory inspired by the irreversible nature of time evolving events. The first part of the book deals with the issue of being able to steer the system from any point of departure to any desired destination. The second part deals with optimal control, the question of finding the best possible course. An overlap with mathematical physics is demonstrated by the Maximum principle, a fundamental principle of optimality arising from geometric control, which is applied to time-evolving systems governed by physics as well as to man-made systems governed by controls. Applications are drawn from geometry, mechanics, and control of dynamical systems. The geometric language in which the results are expressed allows clear visual interpretations and makes the book accessible to physicists and engineers as well as to mathematicians.

  • This book describes various approaches to the Inverse Galois Problem, a classical unsolved problem of mathematics posed by Hilbert at the beginning of the century. It brings together ideas from group theory, algebraic geometry and number theory, topology, and analysis. Assuming only elementary algebra and complex analysis, the author develops the necessary background from topology, Riemann surface theory and number theory. The first part of the book is quite elementary, and leads up to the basic rigidity criteria for the realisation of groups as Galois groups. The second part presents more advanced topics, such as braid group action and moduli spaces for covers of the Riemann sphere, GAR- and GAL- realizations, and patching over complete valued fields. Graduate students and mathematicians from other areas (especially group theory) will find this an excellent introduction to a fascinating field.

Dr Holcombe examines various applications of the idea of a machine in biology, biochemistry and computer science and gives also a rigorous treatment of the way in which these machines can be decomposed and simulated by simpler ones.   • The Clifford algebras of real quadratic forms and their complexifications are studied here in detail, and those parts which are immediately relevant to theoretical physics are seen in the proper broad context. Central to the work is the classification of the conjugation and reversion anti-involutions that arise naturally in the theory. It is of interest that all the classical groups play essential roles in this classification. Other features include detailed sections on conformal groups, the eight-dimensional non-associative Cayley algebra, its automorphism group, the exceptional Lie group G2, and the triality automorphism of Spin 8.   • L-functions associated to automorphic forms encode all classical number theoretic information. They are akin to elementary particles in physics. This book provides an entirely self-contained introduction to the theory of L-functions in a style accessible to graduate students with a basic knowledge of classical analysis, complex variable theory, and algebra. Also within the volume are many new results not yet found in the literature. The exposition provides complete detailed proofs of results in an easy-to-read format using many examples and without the need to know and remember many complex definitions. The main themes of the book are first worked out for GL(2,R) and GL(3,R), and then for the general case of GL(n,R). In an appendix to the book, a set of Mathematica functions is presented, designed to allow the reader to explore the theory from a computational point of view.

  • This book studies the geometric theory of polynomials and rational functions in the plane. Any theory in the plane should make full use of the complex numbers and thus the early chapters build the foundations of complex variable theory, melding together ideas from algebra, topology and analysis. In fact, throughout the book, the author introduces a variety of ideas and constructs theories around them, incorporating much of the classical theory of polynomials as he proceeds. These ideas are used to study a number of unsolved problems, bearing in mind that such problems indicate the current limitations of our knowledge and present challenges for the future. However, theories also lead to solutions of some problems and several such solutions are given including a comprehensive account of the geometric convolution theory. This is an ideal reference for graduate students and researchers working in this area.

  • This book provides a thorough and self-contained study of interdependence and complexity in settings of functional analysis, harmonic analysis and stochastic analysis. It focuses on 'dimension' as a basic counter of degrees of freedom, leading to precise relations between combinatorial measurements and various indices originating from the classical inequalities of Khintchin, Littlewood and Grothendieck. The basic concepts of fractional Cartesian products and combinatorial dimension are introduced and linked to scales calibrated by harmonic-analytic and stochastic measurements.   • The study of algorithmic graph theory and structured families of graphs is an important branch of discrete mathematics. It finds numerous applications, from data transmission through networks to efficiently scheduling aircraft and crews, as well as contributing to breakthroughs in genetic analysis and studies of the brain. Especially important have been the theory and applications of new intersection graph models such as generalizations of permutation graphs and interval graphs. One of these is the study of tolerance graphs and tolerance orders. This book contains the first thorough study of tolerance graphs and related topics, indeed the authors have included proofs of major results previously unpublished in book form. It will act as a springboard for researchers, and especially graduate students, to pursue new directions of investigation. With many examples and exercises it is also suitable for use as the text for a graduate course in graph theory.
