  • Frederick Law Olmsted (1822–1903) was a journalist and landscape designer who is regarded as the founder of American landscape architecture: his most famous achievement was Central Park in New York, of which he became the superintendent in 1857, but he also worked on the design of parks in many other burgeoning American cities, and was called by Charles Eliot Norton 'the greatest artist that America has yet produced'. His A Journey in the Seaboard Slave States was originally published in 1856, and arose from journeys in the south which Olmsted, a passionate abolitionist, had undertaken in 1853–4. This edition was published in two volumes in 1904, with the addition of a biographical sketch by his son and an introduction by William P. Trent. It abounds in fascinating and witty descriptions of Olmsted's encounters and experiences in a society which was on the verge of overwhelming change.

  • The British barrister Henry Latham's thoughtful letters, describing three months he spent in the United States, were published in 1867. His intention in recording the details of his travels was to encourage other Englishmen and women to visit their American cousins and make their own judgements as to their true manner and spirit. He expressed the hope that greater social contact would foster better understanding between the two nations. Latham remarked that Americans of that period were far more hospitable and hearty than the English, and observed that there existed in the land of freedom a highly motivating suspicion that contentment was a spurious kind of virtue invented by the English aristocracy. To his accounts of cities from Niagara and New York to Atlanta and New Orleans, Latham added supplementary chapters reflecting on the chances of survival for Black and indigenous Americans.

  • Published in 1851, Lady Emmeline Stuart Wortley's account of her travels through the Americas during the mid nineteenth century represents an early example of the travel writing genre. The United States was becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination for Europeans at this time, and Lady Emmeline's writings present a quintessentially British impression of America and its people. Volume II of this three-volume work follows on from Lady Emmeline's experiences in the United States as recounted in volume I, taking the reader on a journey through Mexico. Written in an engaging and conversational tone, the volumes are both informative and entertaining, fulfilling the author's aim to 'amuse' with 'the gossip of travel.'
