This series includes pioneering editions of medieval historical accounts by eye-witnesses and contemporaries, collections of source materials such as charters and letters and works that applied new historiographical methods to the interpretation of the European middle ages. The nineteenth century saw an upsurge of interest in medieval manuscripts, texts and artefacts, and the enthusiastic efforts of scholars and antiquaries made a large body of material available in print for the first time. Although many of the analyses have been superseded, they provide fascinating evidence of the academic practices of their time, while a considerable number of texts have still not been re-edited and are still widely consulted.

  • Published between 1909 and 1955, this ten-volume collection contains deeds relating to all of Yorkshire, from the twelfth to the seventeenth century. The deeds are of local historical interest, and provide topographical, philological and genealogical information, as well as insights into daily life. The majority of the records here are presented as abstracts, while documents in the vernacular that are of greater interest or importance are printed in full. Where possible, the documents are dated. Thorough background information and discussion of the deeds is included, as are notable physical descriptions, in particular of the seals. Each volume concludes with an index of people and places. Edited by William Brown (1854–1924) and published in 1922, Volume 3 contains 436 documents, including some rare charters of Richard I. The appendices contain genealogies pertaining to specific documents, transcriptions of some original Latin records, and further discussion of the deeds.

  • This two-volume work comprises a fourteenth-century cartulary containing charters and deeds that document the history of Selby Abbey from its foundation under William the Conqueror in 1069 until the mid-fifteenth century. The editor, J. T. Fowler (1834–1924), originally a surgeon, left medicine for the church. He studied at Durham University before becoming a deacon in the Durham diocese and holding posts in the university itself. The contents of the cartulary are divided across the two volumes, originally published between 1891 and 1893, and Fowler has aimed to reproduce the Latin text as closely as possible, noting any errors in occasional footnotes. Volume 2 includes a preface discussing some personal names of interest found in the cartulary. Also featured is a description of the abbey by architect Charles Clement Hodges (1852–1932), with illustrative plates. The appendix contains further documents relating to the ownership of the abbey's lands.

  • A prominent philanthropist, landowner and politician near Halifax, John Lister (1847–1933) was dedicated to his community. He founded a Catholic school in Halifax and a reformatory trade school in the grounds of his ancestral home. A keen local historian, Lister became involved in the Yorkshire Archaeological Society, particularly in the later years of his life. Along with four other volumes, he edited for the Society this 1924 publication. Transcribing customs records from Hull and records made by royal officials in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, Lister describes in his introduction how the wool trade developed and became a central part of the livelihood and character of Yorkshire. He discusses imports and exports, the lives of merchant families, and how the merchandise itself evolved as wool-working developed. Illuminating the social impact of a historically significant industry, this work remains relevant to researchers interested in the medieval economy.

  • The abbey at Sallay (Sawley) was a Cistercian house founded in 1147/8 by the Percys, close to the Yorkshire-Lancashire border. The chartulary was compiled in the 1330s, comprising records from the foundation onwards, with a few later additions. The house remained a poor foundation, and it suffered when Whalley Abbey was founded only seven miles away in 1296. The 676 charters are arranged in twelve geographical groups, according to the proximity of the properties to Sallay. The documents are given in Latin, with English summaries of each by the editor, Joseph McNulty, who has also attempted to date the charters. Although the abbey is not as well known as other foundations, its charters provide a valuable source for the economic history of the north of England. Volume 1, published in 1933, contains the first 388 charters.

  • The period 1361–4, when these five court rolls from Yorkshire were compiled, was an important era in medieval English jurisprudence, as the older system of keepers of the peace was transformed into that of justices of the peace, who were given full powers to judge cases of felony as well as to enforce the labour laws. Yet in 1364 this system was suddenly abandoned and the powers of the justices diminished. Published in 1939 for the Yorkshire Archaeological Society, the original Latin texts of the five rolls are prefaced here with an extensive introduction by the noted historian of medieval jurisprudence Bertha Haven Putnam (1872–1960), who provides historical and legal context and analyses the content of the rolls, tabulating the various types of offences that were committed, including homicide, larceny and trespass. Putnam also includes, as appendices, selections from the rolls of the exchequer and the king's bench.

  • The prosperous Cluniac priory of St John the Evangelist, Pontefract, was founded around 1090 by Robert de Lacy, remaining subject to its mother-house of La Charité-sur-Loire until the fourteenth century. The charters in this two-volume work have been arranged by type: seigniorial charters; episcopal and papal charters; royal charters; and those relating to priory property, arranged geographically according to proximity to Pontefract. The chartulary is particularly valuable for topographical studies and local and family history - in many cases the names of all witnesses have been transcribed. The manuscript was originally compiled in the first half of the thirteenth century, with additions made on blank leaves over the following centuries (not included by the editor). Volume 2, published in 1902, contains charters 234–556, on local property holdings and leases, and an index to the whole work. Each Latin charter is preceded by a brief English summary.

The Chartulary of the Augustinian Priory of St John the Evangelist of the Park of Healaugh

  • Healaugh Park began as a hermitage in the twelfth century before being re-established as an Augustinian priory in 1218. It remained a small and poor community, with seven canons in 1381 and six in 1535. The Chartulary was compiled in the early sixteenth century, so it covers a much longer period than is usual. It comprises 194 folios, beginning with a pedigree of the Haget family, patrons of the house, a list of priors, and documents relating to Healaugh's early history. There is no geographical or chronological logic to the arrangement of subsequent documents, nor any attempt to date them. The last twenty folios contain later material, mostly in English, which is interesting for the study of dialect and pronunciation at the time, and topographical information. Valuable to local historians, the Chartulary also shows how such small foundations struggled with financial and disciplinary matters. English summaries of the Latin documents are provided.

  • The archive of the York vicars is the largest collection of its type to survive. The present work contains 581 charters relating specifically to the vicars choral of York Minster, dating from the later twelfth century to 1546. It was originally published in 1993 by Nigel J. Tringham, who has written extensively for the Victoria County History. The documents here are a valuable resource for the study of the vicars choral, as well as the topography and social and economic history of medieval York. Painting a picture of the daily affairs of the vicars and of the general population of the city and its suburbs, the charters are arranged geographically according to the street or area mentioned, and then chronologically. Each text up to around 1230 is presented as a full Latin transcription, preceded by a summary in English. Full critical notes accompany each document.

  • The detailed records of the proceedings of the manorial court of Wakefield provide a unique insight into medieval life and commerce, the many legal disputes arising, and the mechanisms for resolving them. The manor court met every three weeks, as well as holding additional courts, or 'tourns', at various locations around the West Riding of Yorkshire. Recognising the historical significance of these court records, in 1901 the Yorkshire Archaeological Society began publishing them as part of its Record Series, continuing intermittently until 1945 and ultimately producing five volumes that span the years 1274–1331. Edited with an introduction and notes by John Lister (1847–1933) and published in 1917, Volume 3 contains the court rolls for the years 1313–16 and 1286. The texts of the rolls are in English.

  • This thirteen-volume series, which first appeared between 1914 and 1965, is an extensive collection of the pre-thirteenth-century charters and related records of Yorkshire, which had previously remained largely unpublished. The first three volumes were edited by William Farrer (1861–1924), after whose death Charles Travis Clay (1885–1978) took up the task. The series was well respected for the quality of Farrer's editing, which was surpassed only by that of Clay in the later volumes. Volume 12 (1965) presents Latin texts relating to the Tison fee and the family of Gilbert Tison. The Tison fee comprised land in the East Riding, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, and Clay has included texts relating to other lands held by the family. This volume also contains facsimile plates of select documents as well as detailed indexes.

Farrer has attempted to provide a date for each document, and has added extensive annotation throughout which relates to the content, background and manuscript sources of the Latin texts.
