  • 'Grace books' were the volumes in which scribes recorded decisions of the administration of the University of Cambridge during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Many of the 'graces' concern the conferral of degrees on individuals, but others refer to more general University business including appointment of teachers and preachers, leaves of absence, inventories and financial records, and the resolution of disputes. Grace Book B, Part 1 covers the years from 1488 to 1511, and this transcription was first published in 1903 with an introduction by Mary Bateson of Newnham College which explains the terminology and the administrative systems underlying it, and the changes they underwent during this period. The Latin documents transcribed in this publication constitute a valuable source for those researching British history and institutions in the early Tudor period, and this reissue will make them readily available to scholars today.

  • Christopher Wordsworth (1848–1938), was a great-nephew of the poet, and part of a Victorian dynasty of Cambridge academics. Social Life at the English Universities in the Eighteenth Century, first published in 1874 while Wordsworth was a Fellow of Peterhouse, is a comprehensive survey of student life in England a century earlier. Its seven appendices include the diary of a student at Trinity College, Cambridge during the last decade of the eighteenth century. Wordsworth's research covered hundreds of works relating to the political and moral condition of the universities, relations between different categories of members, and proposals for reform that were put forward at the time. Music, dramatic entertainment, and expenses are other areas explored in this thorough overview, which remains a useful source for historians of education and society. A companion volume, Wordsworth's Scholae Academicae is also reissued in the Cambridge Library Collection.

  • Thomas Baker (1656–1740) spent most of his long life at St John's College, Cambridge pursuing historical research. He was also an avid book collector, and bequeathed his valuable library to the college. His writings included a history of the college, which was edited by John Mayor and published in 1869. Volume 1 begins with an account of the founding of the college in 1511, and goes on to list donors and details of their endowments, and the first scholars of the college. It also contains information about ordinances, petitions, and important individuals. Baker's sources include written documentation (for example the 'thick black book' and the 'white vellum book') as well as oral traditions. His work is not merely a register of dates and numbers, but a fascinating account of two centuries of committed work and political manoeuvres underlying the later success of this rich and influential college.

  • St John's College, Cambridge, founded in 1511 by Lady Margaret Beaufort, is one of the largest colleges in the University, and is home to one of Cambridge's famous landmarks, the Bridge of Sighs. The author, R. F. Scott, was Master of the College from 1908 until his death in 1933. This history, first published in 1907, covers the period from its foundation, on the ancient site of the hospital of St John the Evangelist, to the start of the twentieth century. Each chapter is dedicated to a different century, and the book finishes with an account of the contemporary social life of the college.   • This War Record, first published in 1920, gives the military service details of the 252 Cambridge University Press employees who joined the armed forces during the First World War. The records are of variable length, with the most comprehensive giving the employee's full name, the regiments in which he served, the areas where he was based, positions held, promotions received and injuries sustained. Out of the 41 employees who lost their lives, photographic portraits of 40 are included. From advertisement department worker Vincent Cummings, killed by a sniper in 1917 while carrying an injured comrade to safety, to Charles Woods, a member of the Press Secretary's department who survived the Somme, Arras, Ypres, Cambrai and Mons, the records pay a moving tribute to the men who risked their lives to serve their country during the First World War.

  • Originally published in 1981, this generously illustrated volume marked the 150th anniversary of the acquisition by the University of Cambridge of the site for its 'New Botanic Garden'. Written by a distinguished authority on British and European plants, the book honours the eminent scientists and key ideas that have been most influential not only in the history of the Botanic Gardens but also in guiding the development of botany itself from the foundations laid by John Ray in the mid-seventeenth century. It also includes rarely seen archival material . The core theme of the book is whole-plant botany, as distinct from cell biology or the study of the 'lower plants' (bacteria and fungi). Relatively little emphasis is given to genetics, plant physiology or ecology. The reader is nevertheless richly rewarded by this engaging and erudite account of Cambridge botany over more than three centuries.

  • The Rev. Joseph Romilly (1791–1864) was a bachelor clergyman of the Church of England, a Fellow of Trinity College, and from 1832 to 1861, Registrary of the University of Cambridge. He kept a regular diary from 1829 to his death, and this selection, introduced and edited by J. P. T. Bury, covers the years 1832–1842. Romilly was a cultured and travelled man of means; he met many of the ablest scholars and leaders of his day, and was a welcome guest in great houses. This volume, which begins in the year of Romilly's election as Registrary, is a unique record of Cambridge before the Royal Commission of 1852, with many valuable sidelights on nineteenth-century society and on intellectual life – or the more relaxed side of it.

Esdaile's study of Roubiliac (1702–1762) provides a fascinating insight into the work of this great late-baroque sculptor, who was born in France but spent most of his working life in England. The Introduction outlines the history behind the world-renowned collection at Trinity College, Cambridge, describing Roubiliac's distinctive 'vivid and intense' style. Esdaile tells of the sculptor's passion for perfection and his habit of sacrificing sleep for art. Twenty illustrations of Roubiliac's work are reproduced – including the busts of Isaac Newton, Francis Bacon and Francis Willoughby – and each is accompanied by detailed notes on the provenance of the work and special points of note.   • Adam Sedgwick (1785–1873) was Professor of Geology at Cambridge from 1818, and in 1819 helped to found the Cambridge Philosophical Society. The 'Discourse' at the heart of this book first appeared in 1833. In it he urged students to develop their characters in this 'place of sound learning and Christian education'. He describes the subjects studied in the university - the 'laws of nature', ancient literature and language, and ethics and metaphysics - and their purpose in the service of God. By the time this fifth edition was published in 1850, however, the book had (as Charles Darwin put it in a letter to the author) 'wonderfully grown', with a Preface of 422 pages and an appendix, ranging very widely over the scientific and philosophical debates of the day, as well as ethics and religion. It provides a fascinating overview of a period of scientific revolution for historians of science and education.

  • Beneath Cambridgeshire's towns, villages, farmland, hills, fens and waterways lie the rocks that display a variety of geological landscapes. Basement rocks are buried under sandy deposits from ancient tropical seas. The rising and tilting of the land due to large-scale movements permitted water flows that produced gradual alterations. Glaciation, erosion and dramatic variations in climate all wrought more rapid changes. The consequences of these processes are revealed in this scholarly 1897 account of the geology of Cambridgeshire, which integrated the latest research then available. Proceeding from the most ancient to the most recent beds, systematic consideration is given to the features, distribution and modes of formation, as well as the economic implications of the various strata. Discussions of palaeontology, including detailed lists of site-specific fossils, and of water supply are also provided. An appendix, lists, maps, memoirs and other publications of H.M. Geological Survey from 1814 to 1897 are included.

  • Barbara Stephen (1872–1945) studied history at Girton College, Cambridge from 1891 to 1894. This history of the college, first published in 1933, drew on her previous publication Emily Davies and Girton College as well as on college reports, letters to and from the founders, and information obtained from staff of the college. The college was established on 16th October 1869 by Emily Davies and Barbara Bodichon, and was the first Cambridge college for women students. Women were not admitted to full degrees at Cambridge until 1948, after Stephen's death, though Oxford had awarded degrees to women since 1920. The author probably never imagined that Girton would admit male undergraduates, as it has from 1979. Stephen's informative short history of the college's first sixty years is an intriguing document for those interested in the history of the University of Cambridge or of women's education.

  • Thomas Baker (1656–1740) spent most of his long life at St John's College, Cambridge pursuing historical research. He was also an avid book collector, and bequeathed his valuable library to the college. His writings included a history of the college, which was edited by John Mayor and published in 1869. Volume 2, to which Mayor made a substantial contribution in his own right, is devoted to the Masters of the college between 1511 and 1840, and includes short biographies and anecdotes about their lives at Cambridge. It describes visits by royalty, disputes with the authorities, appeals against elections, details of salaries, and more domestic matters such as policies on tobacco-smoking and the production of plays in the library. It makes fascinating reading for those interested in Cambridge, the history of education and the lives of these distinguished scholars and the society in which they moved.

  • The celebrated classicist Richard Bentley (1662–1742) was elected Master of Trinity College, Cambridge in 1700. He corresponded with many respected thinkers and scholars, based in Paris, Naples, Berlin, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Copenhagen, Hamburg and elsewhere around the world. These two volumes of his correspondence, first published in 1842 and now reissued, provide fascinating insights into Bentley's thought and the intellectual world he inhabited. Volume 1 contains letters, mostly in Latin, written and received between 1689 and 1712. They appear in chronological order, and shed light on relationships between scholars of different generations and nationalities, and often opposing religious, moral, political, and literary opinions. Exceptionally noteworthy in this volume is Bentley's correspondence with Archbishop Wake and the Earl of Oxford, as well as four letters from Sir Isaac Newton.

  • A History of St Catharine's College, Cambridge, by W. H. S. Jones, was originally published in 1936. The book documents the history of the college, which was founded in 1473 by Robert Woodlark, then the Provost of King's College. It is thought the name was chosen in honour of Catharine of France, the mother of King Henry VI, although it is also possible that it was named as part of the Renaissance cult of St Catharine, a patron saint of learning. The book charts the history of the college from the foundation to the 1930s, and is divided into chapters on topics including domestic history, key figures, and a section on documents, including statutes, income, authorities and correspondence. The book is generally acknowledged to be the authoritative text on St Catharine's College and will appeal to anyone interested in the University of Cambridge.

  • This short history of Pembroke College, Cambridge appeared in 1936, during a particularly successful period for the college in terms of both academic and sporting achievements. Pembroke was founded in 1347, when Edward III granted Marie de St Pol, widow of the Earl of Pembroke, a licence for the foundation of a new educational establishment in the young University of Cambridge. The college flourished, and from the mid-nineteenth century expanded greatly. The author of this book, which is still regarded as the 'official history of Pembroke College', was a leading authority on the college's history. However, he died before the manuscript could be completed, and the final part was written as a postscript by S. C. Roberts, a former Master of the college. The book has delightful illustrations and a thorough index of the influential scholars, former students and benefactors connected with the college over the centuries.

  • This anonymous guide to Cambridge, printed in 1790, is full of fascinating details which give insights into life in the university and the town at the end of the eighteenth century. It contains a history of the colleges (with lists of their benefactors and 'bishops and eminent men') and public buildings; details of the university officers, term dates and prizes; descriptions of the town, its situation, buildings, markets and fairs, and the county, its towns, villages, seats of the nobility and gentry, topography and agriculture; timetables and fares for the various stagecoaches which kept Cambridge in touch with the wider world; and a gazetteer showing the distance from Cambridge to London and other major towns and cities. The volume includes a supplement published in the same year which gives a 'catalogue of the several pictures in the public library and respective colleges, in the University of Cambridge'.

  • Reprinted from the Pall Mall Gazette and published anonymously in 1865, Leslie Stephen's Sketches From Cambridge provides an affectionately sarcastic glimpse of student life at Cambridge University and its colleges. The wickedly funny prose explores the manners and customs of a variety of student stereotypes of the day. Profiled in these caricatures are athletes – with one chapter filled with typically light-hearted venom devoted specifically to rowers; and mathematicians, philosophers, and those poor wandering souls that pursue the social sciences. The collection is intended to provide a complete natural history of that curious specimen the Cambridge student, and it is brilliantly written by Stephen, a former member of the species. While the Cambridge student's fondness for whist, whiskey and billiards is examined, the distinction between him and the even lower, sub-human student form that belongs at Oxford and other institutions is definitively drawn.

  • Originally published in 1920, this digest of medieval records provides a source of reference for the baronial, honorial and manorial history of Cambridgeshire. It draws on materials including the Domesday Survey, the Inquisitio Comitatus Cantabrigiae and a variety of eleventh- and twelfth-century texts to produce abbreviated summaries of the feudal records of the county. It indicates the size of each county subdivision and lists the respective honours and baronies under which the land was held. An index of names and places, together with a general index, allow for easy access to the content. The book remains a useful resource for medievalists and local historians today.

  • This flora, published in 1964, was the first comprehensive account of Cambridgeshire's plants since Babington's of 1860. Based on records to the end of 1962, it details 1509 species. These comprise 27 pteridophytes, 3 gymnosperms, 1223 angiosperms and 256 bryophytes. The following information is provided for each of the species: scientific name; well-known vernacular name, if any; first known record of the plant in the county; synonyms; habitat; notes on rare, difficult or interesting species; distribution by OS grid reference numbers. The introduction examines local topography, climate, the main geological areas and vegetation types, together with a history of botanical investigation in the county. Important localities are noted, highlighting key species that could then be found. Botanists, conservationists and naturalists will find this historic flora provides a valuable baseline for contemporary studies, including those focusing on biodiversity, extinction or the effects of climate change.
