Thanks to advances in plasma science and enabling technology, mirror machines are being reconsidered for fusion power plants and as possible fusion volumetric neutron sources. However, cross-field transport and turbulence in mirrors remains relatively understudied compared with toroidal devices. Turbulence and transport in mirror configurations were studied utilizing the flexible magnetic geometry of the Large Plasma Device (LAPD). Multiple mirror ratios from $M=1$ to $M=2.68$ and three mirror-cell lengths from $L=3.51$ to $L=10.86$ m were examined. Langmuir and magnetic probes were used to measure profiles of density, temperature, potential and magnetic field. The electric field-fluctuation-driven ${\tilde {\boldsymbol{E}}} \times {\boldsymbol{B}}$ particle flux, where $\boldsymbol{B}$ is the background field, was calculated from these quantities. Two probe correlation techniques were used to infer wavenumbers and two-dimensional structure. Cross-field particle flux and density fluctuation power decreased with increased mirror ratio. Core density and temperatures remain similar with mirror ratio, but radial line-integrated density increased. The physical expansion of the plasma in the mirror cell by using a higher field in the source region may have led to reduced density fluctuation power through the increased gradient scale length. This increased scale length reduced the growth rate and saturation level of rotational interchange and drift-like instabilities. Despite the introduction of magnetic curvature, no evidence of mirror-driven instabilities – interchange, velocity space or otherwise – were observed. For curvature-induced interchange, many possible stabilization mechanisms were present, suppressing the visibility of the instability.

Motivated by explosive releases of energy in fusion, space and astrophysical plasmas, we consider the nonlinear stability of stratified magnetohydrodynamic equilibria against two-dimensional interchanges of straight magnetic-flux tubes. We demonstrate that, even within this restricted class of dynamics, the linear stability of an equilibrium does not guarantee its nonlinear stability: equilibria can be metastable. We show that the minimum-energy state accessible to a metastable equilibrium under non-diffusive two-dimensional dynamics can be found by solving a combinatorial optimisation problem. These minimum-energy states are, to good approximation, the final states reached by our simulations of destabilised metastable equilibria for which turbulent mixing is suppressed by viscosity. To predict the result of fully turbulent relaxation, we construct a statistical mechanical theory based on the maximisation of Boltzmann's mixing entropy. This theory is analogous to the Lynden-Bell statistical mechanics of collisionless stellar systems and plasma, and to the Robert–Sommeria–Miller theory of two-dimensional vortex turbulence. Our theory reproduces well the results of our numerical simulations for sufficiently large perturbations to the metastable equilibrium.

The generation of an autoresonantly phase-locked high-amplitude plasma waves to the chirped beat frequency of two driving lasers is studied in two dimensions using particle-in-cell simulations. The two-dimensional plasma and laser parameters correspond to those that optimized the plasma wave amplitude in one-dimensional simulations. Near the start of autoresonant locking, the two-dimensional simulations appear similar to one-dimensional particle-in-cell results (Luo et al., Phys. Rev. Res., vol. 6, 2024, p. 013338) with plasma wave amplitudes above the Rosenbluth–Liu limit. Later, just below wave breaking, the two-dimensional simulation exhibits a Weibel-like instability and eventually laser beam filamentation. These limit the coherence of the plasma oscillation after the peak plasma wave field is obtained. In spite of the reduction of spatial coherence of the accelerating density structure, the acceleration of self-injected electrons in the case studied remains at $70\,\%$ to $80\,\%$ of that observed in one dimension. Other effects such as plasma wave bowing are discussed.

Turbulence self-organization is studied in the flux-driven regime by means of the reduced model Tokam1D. Derived in the electrostatic and isothermal limit but keeping finite electron and ion temperatures, it features two instabilities that are suspected to dominate turbulent transport at the edge of L-mode tokamak plasmas: interchange (a reduced version of the resistive ballooning modes) and collisional drift waves, governed respectively by an effective gravity parameter $g$ and the adiabaticity parameter $C$. The usual properties of these two instabilities are recovered in the linear regime. The nonlinear study focuses on the self-organization of collisional drift-wave turbulence at $g=0$. It is found that the energy stored in zonal flows (ZFs) decreases smoothly at small $C$ due to the reduction of both electric and diamagnetic stresses. Conversely to gradient-driven simulations, no sharp collapse is observed due to the self-consistent evolution of the equilibrium density profile. The ZFs are found to structure into staircases at small and large $C$. These structures exhibit a rich variety of dynamics but are found to be robust to large perturbations. Their nucleation is found to be critically governed by the phase dynamics. Finally, the staircase structures are lost in the gradient-driven regime, when the system is prevented from storing turbulent energy into the equilibrium density (pressure) profile.

Upper bounds on the growth of instabilities in gyrokinetic systems have recently been derived by considering the optimal perturbations that maximise the growth of a chosen energy norm. This technique has previously been applied to two-species gyrokinetic systems with fully kinetic ions and electrons. However, in tokamaks and stellarators, the expectation from linear instability analyses is that the most important kinetic electron contribution to ion-scale modes often comes from the trapped electrons, which bounce faster than the time scale upon which instabilities evolve. As a result, a fully kinetic electron response is not required to describe unstable modes in many cases. Here, we apply the optimal mode analysis to a reduced two-species system consisting of fully gyrokinetic ions and bounce-averaged electrons, with the aim of finding a tighter bound on ion-scale instabilities in toroidal geometry. This analysis yields bounds that are greatly reduced in comparison with the earlier two-species result. Moreover, if the energy norm is properly chosen, wave–particle resonance effects can be captured, reproducing the stabilisation of density-gradient-driven instabilities in maximum-$J$ devices. The optimal mode analysis also reveals that the maximum-$J$ property has an additional stabilising effect on ion-temperature-gradient-driven instabilities, even in the absence of an electron free energy source. This effect is explained in terms of the concept of mode inertia, making it distinct from other mechanisms.

The regulation of electron heat transport in high-$\beta$, weakly collisional, magnetized plasma is investigated. A temperature gradient oriented along a mean magnetic field can induce a kinetic heat-flux-driven whistler instability (HWI), which back-reacts on the transport by scattering electrons and impeding their flow. Previous analytical and numerical studies have shown that the heat flux for the saturated HWI scales as $\beta _e^{-1}$. These numerical studies, however, had limited scale separation and consequently large fluctuation amplitudes, which calls into question their relevance at astrophysical scales. To this end, we perform a series of particle-in-cell simulations of the HWI across a range of $\beta _e$ and temperature-gradient length scales under two different physical set-ups. The saturated heat flux in all of our simulations follows the expected $\beta _e^{-1}$ scaling, supporting the robustness of the result. We also use our simulation results to develop and implement several methods to construct an effective collision operator for whistler turbulence. The results point to an issue with the standard quasi-linear explanation of HWI saturation, which is analogous to the well-known $90^{\circ }$ scattering problem in the cosmic-ray community. Despite this limitation, the methods developed here can serve as a blueprint for future work seeking to characterize the effective collisionality caused by kinetic instabilities.

We investigate the global stability properties of an electron–positron pair plasma in the linear regime. The plasma is confined by the magnetic field of an infinitely long wire. This configuration is the large-aspect-ratio limit of the levitated dipole experiment of the APEX collaboration. The stability is governed by the diocotron mode and the interchange mode. The diocotron mode dominates in the case of a cold, non-neutral plasma. For specific density profiles we find analytic solutions. We derive a necessary condition for instability and find unstable solutions if the plasma forms a thin shell around the wire. Solutions for arbitrary density profiles with finite temperature are obtained numerically. We find that finite-temperature effects stabilise the diocotron mode. The interchange mode, on the other hand, dominates if the plasma is neutral and has a finite temperature. This mode becomes unstable for a steep-enough density gradient, that is aligned with the gradient of the magnetic field strength and is stabilised by the equilibrium $E\times B$ drift of a non-neutral plasma.

This study investigates the impact of local thermal non-equilibrium on the stability analysis of partially ionized plasma within a porous medium. The plasma, heated from below, is enclosed by various combinations of bounding surfaces. Both nonlinear (via the energy method) and linear (utilizing the normal mode analysis method) analyses are performed. Eigenvalue problems for both analyses are formulated and solved using the Galerkin method. The study also explores the effects of compressibility, medium permeability and magnetic fields on system stability. The collisional frequency among plasma components and the thermal diffusivity ratio significantly influence energy decay. The results reveal that the Rayleigh–Darcy number is identical for both nonlinear and linear analyses, thus eliminating the possibility of a subcritical region and confirming global stability. The principle of exchange of stabilities is validated, indicating the absence of oscillatory convection modes. Medium permeability, heat-transfer coefficient and compressibility delay the onset of convection, demonstrating stabilizing effects. Conversely, the porosity-modified conductivity ratio hastens the convection process, indicating destabilizing effects. Rigid–rigid bounding surfaces are found to be thermally more stable for confining the partially ionized plasma. Additionally, the magnetic field exerts a stabilizing influence.

There is renewed interest in direct-drive inertial confinement fusion, following the milestone December 2022 3.15 MJ ignition result on the National Ignition Facility. A key obstacle is the control of the two-plasmon decay instability. Here, recent advances in inhomogeneous turbulence theory are applied to the broadband parametric instability problem for the first time. A novel dispersion relation is derived for the two-plasmon decay in a uniform plasma valid under broad-bandwidth laser fields with arbitrary power spectra. The effects of temporal incoherence on the instability are then studied. In the limit of large bandwidth, the well-known scaling relations for the growth rate are recovered, but it is shown that the result is more sensitive to the spectral shape of the laser pulse rather than to its coherence time. The range of wavenumbers of the excited plasma waves is shown to be substantially broadened, suggesting that the absolute instability is favoured in regions further away from the quarter critical density. The intermediate-bandwidth regime is explored numerically – the growth rate is reduced to half its monochromatic value for laser intensities of $10^{15} \ \text {W}\ \text {cm}^{-2}$ and relatively modest bandwidths of $5 \ \text {THz}$. The instability-quenching properties of a spectrum of discrete lines spread over some bandwidth have also been studied. The reduction in the growth rate is found to be somewhat lower compared with the continuous case but is still significant, despite the fact that, formally, the coherence time of such a laser pulse is infinite.

We study the tearing instability of a current sheet in a relativistic pair plasma with a power-law distribution function. We first estimate the growth rate analytically and then confirm the analytical results by solving numerically the dispersion equation, taking into account all exact particle trajectories within the reconnecting layer. We found that the instability is suppressed when the particle spectrum becomes harder.

On the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST), the electron cyclotron wave (ECW) and lower hybrid wave (LHW) are actively used to achieve a high-performance plasma. Turbulence associated with the combined heating experiment is studied numerically based on the gyrokinetic toroidal code (GTC). The linear simulation results show that the unstable mode peaks at $k_{\theta }\rho _{s}\approx 0.65$ and $k_{\theta }\rho _{s}\approx 1.42$. Meanwhile, all of the frequencies of these instabilities are positive, which suggests that the collisionless trapped electron mode (CTEM) is the dominant instability. In the process of nonlinear simulations, a higher transport level is locally achieved during the two waves combined heating due to a formation of a steeper electron temperature gradient. In addition, a low-frequency geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) is observed in the nonlinear stage. Effects of the electron beta, the dimensionless ratio of $T_e/T_i$ and $R/L_{T_e}$ on the growth rate of instability, are also discussed in the paper.

Young stellar objects (YSOs) are protostars that exhibit bipolar outflows fed by accretion disks. Theories of the transition between disk and outflow often involve a complex magnetic field structure thought to be created by the disk coiling field lines at the jet base; however, due to limited resolution, these theories cannot be confirmed with observation and thus may benefit from laboratory astrophysics studies. We create a dynamically similar laboratory system by driving a $\sim$1 MA current pulse with a 200 ns rise through a $\approx$2 mm-tall Al cylindrical wire array mounted to a three-dimensional (3-D)-printed, stainless steel scaffolding. This system creates a plasma that converges on the centre axis and ejects cm-scale bipolar outflows. Depending on the chosen 3-D-printed load path, the system may be designed to push the ablated plasma flow radially inwards or off-axis to make rotation. In this paper, we present results from the simplest iteration of the load which generates radially converging streams that launch non-rotating jets. The temperature, velocity and density of the radial inflows and axial outflows are characterized using interferometry, gated optical and ultraviolet imaging, and Thomson scattering diagnostics. We show that experimental measurements of the Reynolds number and sonic Mach number in three different stages of the experiment scale favourably to the observed properties of YSO jets with $Re\sim 10^5\unicode{x2013}10^9$ and $M\sim 1\unicode{x2013}10$, while our magnetic Reynolds number of $Re_M\sim 1\unicode{x2013}15$ indicates that the magnetic field diffuses out of our plasma over multiple hydrodynamical time scales. We compare our results with 3-D numerical simulations in the PERSEUS extended magnetohydrodynamics code.

Continuum kinetic simulations are increasingly capable of resolving high-dimensional phase space with advances in computing. These capabilities can be more fully explored by using linear kinetic theory to initialize the self-consistent field and phase space perturbations of kinetic instabilities. The phase space perturbation of a kinetic eigenfunction in unmagnetized plasma has a simple analytic form, and in magnetized plasma may be well approximated by truncation of a cyclotron-harmonic expansion. We catalogue the most common use cases with a historical discussion of kinetic eigenfunctions and by conducting nonlinear Vlasov–Poisson and Vlasov–Maxwell simulations of singlemode and multimode two-stream, loss-cone and Weibel instabilities in unmagnetized and magnetized plasmas with one- and two-dimensional geometries. Applications to quasilinear kinetic theory are discussed and applied to the bump-on-tail instability. In order to compute eigenvalues we present novel representations of the dielectric function for ring distributions in magnetized plasmas with power series, hypergeometric and trigonometric integral forms. Eigenfunction phase space fluctuations are visualized for prototypical cases such as the Bernstein modes to build intuition. In addition, phase portraits are presented for the magnetic well associated with nonlinear saturation of the Weibel instability, distinguishing current-density-generating trapping structures from charge-density-generating ones.

We compare three different approaches to describe a magnetic island in a generic toroidal plasma: (i) perturbative, from the perspective of the equilibrium magnetic field and the related action in a variational principle formulation; (ii) again perturbative, based on the integrability of a system with a single resonant mode and the application of a canonical transformation onto a new island equilibrium system; and (iii) non-perturbative, making use of a full geometric description of the island considered as a stand-alone plasma domain. For the three approaches, we characterize some observables and discuss the respective limits.

A careful theoretical analysis of the excitation of Alfvén eigenmodes (AEs), such as TAE (toroidicity-induced AE) and RSAE (reversed shear AE), by superalfvenic energetic particles is required for reliable predictions of energetic ion relaxation in present day fusion experiments. This includes the evaluation of different AE damping mechanisms including radiative and continuum dampings which are the focus of this study. A recent comprehensive benchmark of different eigenmode solvers including gyrokinetic, gyrofluid and hybrid magenetohydrodynamics (MHD) has shown that employed models may have deficiencies when addressing some of them (Taimourzadeh et al., Nucl. Fusion, vol. 59, 2019, 066006). In this paper, we are studying the radiative and continuum dampings of RSAEs in details which were missing in hybrid NOVA/NOVA-C calculations to prepare a NOVA-C package with a substantial upgrade. Both dampings require the finite Larmor radius (FLR) corrections to AE mode structures to be accounted for. Accurately calculating different damping rates and understanding their parametric dependencies, we resolve the limitation coming out of the perturbative approach. In particular, here, the radiative damping is included perturbatively, whereas the continuum damping is computed non-perturbatively. Our comparison leads to the conclusion that the non-perturbative treatment of the unstable RSAE modes is needed to find the agreement with the gyrokinetic calculations. We expect that the RSAE mode structure modification plays a dominant role in determining the RSAE stability.

The maser instability associated with the loss-cone distribution has been widely invoked to explain the radio bursts observed in the astrophysical plasma environment, such as aurora and corona. In the laboratory plasma of a tokamak, events reminiscent of these radio bursts have also been frequently observed as an electron cyclotron emission (ECE) burst in the microwave range ($\mathrm{\sim }2{f_{\textrm{ce}}}$ near the last closed flux surface) during transient magnetohydrodynamic events. These bursts have a short duration of ~10 μs and display a radiation spectrum corresponding to a radiation temperature ${T_{e,\textrm{rad}}}$ of over $30\ \textrm{keV}$ while the edge thermal electron temperature ${T_e}$ is only in the range of $1\ \textrm{keV}$. Suprathermal electrons can be generated through magnetic reconnection, and a loss-cone distribution can be generated through open stochastic field lines in the magnetic mirror of the near-edge region of a tokamak plasma. Radiation modelling shows that a sharp distribution gradient $\partial f/\partial {v_ \bot } > 0$ at the loss-cone boundary can cause a negative absorption of ECE radiation through the maser instability. The negative absorption then amplifies the radiation so that the microwave intensity is significantly stronger than the thermal value. The significant ${T_{e,\textrm{rad}}}$ from the simulations suggests the potential role of the loss-cone maser instability in generating the ECE burst in a tokamak.

A fusion neutron source (FNS) based on the gas-dynamic trap (GDT, Budker Institute, Novosibirsk) is considered for confinement of two-species plasma heated by neutral beam injection in a regime where the fast ion distribution function is far from Maxwellian. Kinetic instabilities are expected to develop in this regime, and in this paper we investigate the ion-cyclotron instability evolving in moderate densities of pure hydrogen and mixed deuterium–hydrogen target plasmas. The properties of the studied unstable mode, such as its azimuthal wavenumbers, propagation direction and its being affected by changes in the bulk plasma density and composition, allow us to identify it as the drift cyclotron loss cone (DCLC) instability. This mode scatters fast ions and thereby leads to drops in diamagnetic flux signals and increases longitudinal energy and particle losses, with the average energy of the lost ions estimated to be far above the temperature of warm Maxwellian ions. Our interpretation is that the unstable wave grows due to interaction with the fast ions located near the loss cone in the velocity space and scatters them. Applying the method of suppressing the DCLC instability by filling the loss cone with warm plasma, we have determined the values of plasma density and deuterium percentage that allow us to suppress the DCLC instability in the GDT. These findings justify using mixed bulk plasmas in fusion neutron source operation.

The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations, as a collisional fluid model that remains in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE), have long been used to describe turbulence in myriad space and astrophysical plasmas. Yet, the vast majority of these plasmas, from the solar wind to the intracluster medium (ICM) of galaxy clusters, are only weakly collisional at best, meaning that significant deviations from LTE are not only possible but common. Recent studies have demonstrated that the kinetic physics inherent to this weakly collisional regime can fundamentally transform the evolution of such plasmas across a wide range of scales. Here, we explore the consequences of pressure anisotropy and Larmor-scale instabilities for collisionless, $\beta \gg 1$, turbulence, focusing on the role of a self-organizational effect known as ‘magneto-immutability’. We describe this self-organization analytically through a high-$\beta$, reduced ordering of the Chew–Goldberger–Low-MHD (CGL-MHD) equations, finding that it is a robust inertial-range effect that dynamically suppresses magnetic-field-strength fluctuations, anisotropic-pressure stresses and dissipation due to heat fluxes. As a result, the turbulent cascade of Alfvénic fluctuations continues below the putative viscous scale to form a robust, nearly conservative, MHD-like inertial range. These findings are confirmed numerically via Landau-fluid CGL-MHD turbulence simulations that employ a collisional closure to mimic the effects of microinstabilities. We find that microinstabilities occupy a small (${\sim }5\,\%$) volume-filling fraction of the plasma, even when the pressure anisotropy is driven strongly towards its instability thresholds. We discuss these results in the context of recent predictions for ion-vs-electron heating in low-luminosity accretion flows and observations implying suppressed viscosity in ICM turbulence.

The response tensor is derived for a relativistically streaming, strongly magnetized, one-dimensional Jüttner distribution of electrons and positrons, referred to as a pulsar plasma. This is used to produce a general treatment of wave dispersion in a pulsar plasma. Specifically, relativistic streaming, the spread in Lorentz factors in a pulsar rest frame and cyclotron resonances are taken into account. Approximations to the response tensor are derived by making approximations to relativistic plasma dispersion functions appearing in the general form of the response tensor. The cold-plasma limit, the highly relativistic limit and limits related to cyclotron resonances are considered. The theory developed in this paper has applications to generalized Faraday rotation in pulsars and magnetars.

Where and under what conditions the transfer of energy between electromagnetic fields and particles takes place in the solar wind remains an open question. We investigate the conditions that promote the growth of kinetic instabilities predicted by linear theory to infer how turbulence and temperature-anisotropy-driven instabilities are interrelated. Using a large dataset from Solar Orbiter, we introduce the radial rate of strain, a novel measure computed from single-spacecraft data, which we interpret as a proxy for the double-adiabatic strain rate. The solar wind exhibits high absolute values of the radial rate of strain at locations with large temperature anisotropy. We measure the kurtosis and skewness of the radial rate of strain from the statistical moments to show that it is non-Gaussian for unstable intervals and increasingly intermittent at smaller scales with a power-law scaling. We conclude that the velocity field fluctuations in the solar wind contribute to the presence of temperature anisotropy sufficient to create potentially unstable conditions.
