This chapter takes the philosopher Karl Leonhard Reinhold as a starting point to look at the ways in which critical philosophers sought to cast Kantianism as the heir to Protestantism. In his highly influential Letters on the Kantian Philosophy, Reinhold argues that the “first” Reformation of the sixteenth century was only a “preparation” for the current attempts to purify morality through philosophy. Situated in the context of Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi’s accusation that contemporary philosophy led to atheism (the so-called pantheism controversy or Spinozastreit) it traces Reinhold’s evolution from a proponent of the Catholic Enlightenment to an energetic advocate for Kantian philosophy at the University of Jena. Concluding briefly with Johann Gottlieb Fichte, the chapter shows how the new language of Protestantism discussed in the previous chapters proved fruitful for advocates of the new philosophy.

This chapter looks at the impact of the French Revolution on this German discussion of the meaning of Protestantism, as well as at the internationalization of its themes through Charles Villers’ Essay on the Spirit and Influence of Luther’s Reformation (1804). A French exile in Germany, Villers synthesized a German historical discourse about the Reformation and progress and repackaged and publicized it to a European audience in response to a prize essay competition by the Institut de France. Accompanied by a brief discussion of Johann Gottfried Herder’s historical theories, the chapter also shows how Villers’ intervention (and its reception) signaled a return of the themes of nation and religion as forces of historical discourse.

This introduction provides a context for understanding the volume’s contents and their contemporary significance. First, it establishes a frame for understanding Rorty’s intellectual development, in general, and the essays collected in the volume, in particular, through Rorty’s enduring commitment to the idea of doing “critical philosophy.” Second, it offers a précis of the individual essays, including what they contribute to our knowledge of Rorty’s thought and to ongoing philosophical debates.
