The virtual model control (VMC) method establishes a direct correlation model between the end-effector and the main body by selecting appropriate virtual mechanical components. This approach facilitates direct force control while circumventing the necessity for complex dynamic modeling. However, the simplification inherent in this modeling can result in inaccuracies in the calculation of joint driving torques, ultimately diminishing control precision. Moreover, VMC typically depends on predefined models for control, which constrains its adaptability in dynamically complex environments and under varying movement conditions. To address these limitations, this paper proposes the BP-VMC method, which is based on a backpropagation neural network (BPNN). Initially, a quadruped robot model was established through kinematic analysis. Subsequently, a decomposed VMC model was developed, and BPNN was introduced to facilitate the adaptive tuning of virtual parameters. This approach resulted in the creation of a virtual mechanical component model with adaptive capabilities, compensating for errors arising from simplified modeling. Finally, a simulation control system was constructed based on the BP-VMC control framework to validate the optimization of control performance. Simulation experiments demonstrated that, in comparison to traditional VMC methods, the BP-VMC method exhibits enhanced control accuracy and stability, achieving a 30% reduction in trajectory tracking error, a 40% reduction in velocity tracking error, and a 20–30% improvement in instability indices across various working conditions. This evidence underscores the BP-VMC method’s robust adaptability in dynamic environments.

Pouch-type actuators have recently garnered significant interest and are increasingly utilized in diverse fields, including soft wearable robotics and prosthetics. This is largely due to their lightweight, high output force, and low cost. However, the inherent hysteresis behavior markedly affects the stability and force control of pouch-type driven systems. This study proposes a modified generalized Prandtl–Ishlinskii (MGPI) model, which includes generalized play operators, the tangent envelope function, and one-sided dead-zone operators, to describe the asymmetric and non-convex hysteresis characteristics of pouch-type actuators. Compared to a classical Prandtl–Ishlinskii (PI) model incorporating one-sided dead-zone functions, the MGPI model exhibits smaller relative errors at six different air pressures, demonstrating its capability to accurately describe asymmetric and non-convex hysteresis curves. Subsequently, the MGPI hysteresis model is integrated with displacement sensing technology to establish a load compensation control system for maintaining human posture. Four healthy subjects are recruited to conduct a 1 kg load compensation test, achieving efficiencies of 85.84%, 84.92%, 83.63%, and 68.86%, respectively.

This paper proposes an online robust self-learning terminal sliding mode control (RS-TSMC) with stability guarantee for balancing control of reaction wheel bicycle robots (RWBR) under model uncertainties and disturbances, which improves the balancing control performance of RWBR by optimising the constrained output of TSMC. The TSMC is designed for a second-order mathematical model of RWBR. Then robust adaptive dynamic programming based on an actor-critic algorithm is used to optimise the TSMC only by data sampled online. The system closed-loop stability and convergence of the neural network weights are guaranteed based on the Lyapunov analysis. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through simulations and experiments.

Maintaining object grasp stability represents a pivotal challenge within the domain of robotic manipulation and upper-limb prosthetics. Perturbations originating from external sources frequently disrupt the stability of grasps, resulting in slippage occurrences. Also, if the grasping forces are not optimal while controlling the slip, it may result in the deformation of the objects. This study investigates the robustification of a reinforcement learning (RL) policy for implementing intelligent bionic reflex control, i.e., slip and deformation prevention of the grasped objects. RL-derived policies are vulnerable to failures in environments characterized by dynamic variability. To mitigate this vulnerability, we propose a methodology involving the incorporation of an adaptive sliding mode controller into a pre-trained RL policy. By exploiting the inherent invariance property of the sliding mode algorithm in the presence of uncertainties, our approach strengthens the robustness of the RL policies against diverse and dynamic variations. Numerical simulations substantiate the efficacy of our approach in robustifying RL policies trained within simulated environments.

This article presents a detailed examination of circular target localization techniques for measuring robot pose and performing online pose correction. The investigated target localization methods include centroiding, ellipse fitting with point data and gradient information, and ellipse fitting methods with augmented and corrected input data. The performance of each method is evaluated in terms of accuracy and precision of measurements through experimental comparison with a laser tracker. This study provides technical and practical insights for selecting an appropriate target localization method in robotic applications. It also introduces a vision-based solution for robot relative error correction, comprising the calibration procedure and a closed-loop control with a proportional–integral-derivative controller for pose correction. Results show enhanced accuracy in robot positioning relative to workpiece, highlighting the effectiveness of the proposed solution in robotic drilling applications.

This paper introduces a lower limb exoskeleton for gait rehabilitation, which has been designed to be adjustable to a wide range of patients by incorporating an extension mechanism and series elastic actuators (SEAs). This configuration adapts better to the user’s anatomy and the natural movements of the user’s joints. However, the inclusion of SEAs increases actuator mass and size, while also introducing nonlinearities and changes in the dynamic response of the exoskeletons. To address the challenges related to the human–exoskeleton dynamic interaction, a nonsingular terminal sliding mode control that integrates an adaptive parameter adjustment strategy is proposed, offering a practical solution for trajectory tracking with uncertain exoskeleton dynamics. Simulation results demonstrate the algorithm’s ability to estimate unknown parameters. Experimental tests analyze the performance of the controller against uncertainties and external disturbances.

Bilateral teleoperation has witnessed significant development since the mid-20th century, addressing challenges related to human presence in environments with constraints or a lack of skilled professionals. This article presents the kinematic and self-collision analyses of the quasi-spherical parallel manipulator, a three-legged parallel robot used as a haptic master device. The device is designed for remote center of motion-constrained operation in the telesurgical field. Inverse and forward kinematics are thoroughly analyzed to study working modes, singular configurations, and implement a haptic control architecture. The research explores the operative and reachable workspaces of the possible working modes, comparing them to find the most suitable one. Results highlight how the addition of the self-collision phenomenon impacts the working mode choice, drastically reducing most of the modes’ operative workspaces. An anti-collision control algorithm is finally introduced to maintain the architecture within its reachable workspace.

This article is devoted to the control of bio-inspired robots that are underactuated. These robots are composed of tensegrity joints remotely actuated with cables, which mimic the musculoskeletal system of the bird neck. A computed torque control (CTC) is applied to these robots as well as an original control called pseudo computed torque control (PCTC). This new control uses the dynamics and the pseudo-inverse of the Jacobian matrix. The stability of the two proposed controls is then analyzed through linearization of the dynamic model and expression of the closed-loop transfer function in the Laplace domain. We show that, depending on the desired trajectory, the CTC can be unstable when the controlled variables are the end effector position and orientation. For a robot with many joints and a limited number of cables, the CTC is always unstable. Instead, the PCTC shows a large domain of stability. The analysis is complemented by experimental tests demonstrating that the CTC and PCTC exhibit similar performance when the CTC is stable. Furthermore, the PCTC maintains stability on trajectories where the CTC becomes unstable, showing robustness to perturbations as well.

This work proposes a novel grasp detection method, the Efficient Grasp Aware Network (EGA-Net), for robotic visual grasp detection. Our method obtains semantic information for grasping through feature extraction. It efficiently obtains feature channel weights related to grasping tasks through the constructed ECA-ResNet module, which can smooth the network’s learning. Meanwhile, we use concatenation to obtain low-level features with rich spatial information. Our method inputs an RGB-D image and outputs the grasp poses and their quality score. The EGA-Net is trained and tested on the Cornell and Jacquard datasets, and we achieve 98.9% and 95.8% accuracy, respectively. The proposed method only takes 24 ms for real-time performance to process an RGB-D image. Moreover, our method achieved better results in the comparison experiment. In the real-world grasp experiments, we use a 6-degree of freedom (DOF) UR-5 robotic arm to demonstrate its robust grasping of unseen objects in various scenes. We also demonstrate that our model can successfully grasp different types of objects without any processing in advance. The experiment results validate our model’s exceptional robustness and generalization.

Traction of the head-neck is important in the treatment of patients suffering from neck pain due to degeneration of the intervertebral discs. Conventional neck traction is provided manually by experienced physical therapists who maintain a desired orientation of the head-neck relative to the trunk while applying the traction. It is postulated that innovative designs of neck exoskeletons can provide the same function both flexibly and accurately. This article presents a novel architecture of a parallel mechanism whose base sits on the human shoulders with 4 parallel chains, each chain having a revolute-revolute-universal-revolute (RRUR) structure, while the end-effector is connected rigidly to the human head. Each chain has five degrees-of-freedom (DOF) and applies a constraint on the motion of the end-effector. As a result, this parallel mechanism allows two DOFs to the end-effector. These are (i) forward flexion or lateral bending of the head and (ii) vertical translation. An important motivation for the current design with RRUR structure is to characterize the range of forward flexion/lateral bending of the head-neck with this structure and the vertical translation to the end-effector. A physical prototype was constructed and tested to evaluate the performance of this mechanism in hardware for the proposed application.

This paper presents a decentralized, cooperative, real-time avoidance control strategy for robotic manipulators. The proposed avoidance control law builds on the concepts of artificial potential field functions and provides tighter bounds on the minimum safe distance when compared to traditional potential-based controllers. Moreover, the proposed avoidance control law is given in analytical, continuous closed form, avoiding the use of optimization techniques and discrete algorithms, and is rigorously proven to guarantee collision avoidance at all times. Examples of planar and 3D manipulators with cylindrical links under the proposed avoidance control are given and compared with the traditional approach of modeling links and obstacles with multiple spheres. The results show that the proposed avoidance control law can achieve, in general, faster convergence, smaller tracking errors, and lower control torques than the traditional approach. Furthermore, we provide extensions of the avoidance control to robotic manipulators with bounded control torques.

Prostate cancer is the second most common malignancy in American men. High-dose-rate brachytherapy is a popular treatment technique in which a large, localized radiation dose is used to kill cancer. Utilization of curvilinear catheter implantation inside the prostate gland to provide access channels to host the radiation source has shown superiority in terms of improved dosimetric constraints compared to straight needles. To this aim, we have introduced an active needle to curve inside the prostate conformal to the patient’s specific anatomical relationship for improved dose distribution to the prostate and reduced toxicity to the organs at risk. This work presents closed-loop control of our tendon-driven active needle in water medium and air using the position feedback of the tip obtained in real time from an ultrasound (US) or an electromagnetic (EM) tracking sensor, respectively. The active needle consists of a compliant flexure section to realize bending in two directions via actuation of two internal tendons. Tracking errors using US and EM trackers are estimated and compared. Results show that the bending angle of the active needle could be controlled using position feedback of the US or the EM tracking system with a bending angle error of less than 1.00 degree when delay is disregarded. It is concluded that the actuation system and controller, presented in this work, are able to realize a desired bending angle at the active needle tip with reasonable accuracy paving the path for tip tracking and manipulation control evaluations in a prostate brachytherapy.

In this article, we review the main results achieved by the research activities carried out at PRISMA Lab of the University of Naples Federico II where, for 35 years, an interdisciplinary team of experts developed robots that are ultimately useful to humans. We summarize the key contributions made in the last decade in the six research areas of dynamic manipulation and locomotion, aerial robotics, human-robot interaction, artificial intelligence and cognitive robotics, industrial robotics, and medical robotics. After a brief overview of each research field, the most significant methodologies and results are reported and discussed, highlighting their cross-disciplinary and translational aspects. Finally, the potential future research directions identified are discussed.

Heavy-duty hexapod robots are well-suited for physical transportation, disaster relief, and resource exploration. The immense locomotion capabilities conferred by the six appendages of these systems enable traversal over unstructured and challenging terrain. However, tipping can be a serious concern when moving with a tripod gait in these challenging environments, which may cause irreversible consequences such as compromised movement control and potential damage. In this paper, we focus on heavy-duty hexapod robot sideline tipping judgment and recovery during tripod gait motion, and a novel sideline tipping judgment and recovery method is proposed by adjusting an optimal swinging leg to the stance state. Considering the locomotion environments, motion mode, and tipping analysis, the robot’s stability margin is quantified, and the tipping event is evaluated by the Force Angle Stability Measure (FASM). The recovery method is initiated upon detecting that the robot is tipping, which involves the selection of an adjustment leg and the determination of an optimal foothold. Since the FASM is based on the foot force and robot center of gravity (CoG), the stability margin quantification expression is reformulated to the constraint form of quadratic programming (QP). Furthermore, a foot force distribution method, integrating stability margin considerations into the QP model, has been devised to ensure post-adjustment stability of the landing leg. Experiments on tipping judgment and recovery demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches on tipping judgment and recovery.

This article designs a robotic Chinese character writing system that can resist random human interference. Firstly, an innovative stroke extraction method of Chinese characters was devised. A basic Chinese character stroke extraction method based on cumulative direction vectors is used to extract the components that make up the strokes of Chinese characters. The components are then stitched together into strokes based on the sequential base stroke joining method. To enable the robot to imitate handwriting Chinese character skills, we utilised stroke information as the demonstration and modelled the skills using dynamic movement primitives (DMPs). To suppress random human interference, this article combines improved DMPs and conductance control to adjust robot trajectories based on real-time visual measurements. The experimental results show that the proposed method can accurately extract the strokes of most Chinese characters. The designed trajectory adjustment method offers better smoothness and robustness than direct rotating and translating curves. The robot is able to adjust its posture and trajectory in real time to eliminate the negative impacts of human interference.

Over decades of robotics research, cooperative object transportation has been studied as a meaningful model problem for robotic networks because it possesses a variety of crucial challenges. Although these challenges are demanding, the cooperation of multiple robots has the potential to solve automation problems that are beyond the scope of an individual robot. So far, the model problem has mostly been addressed by explicitly controlling the robots’ positions. However, the position-based approach suffers from some intrinsic detriments, for example, the lack of explicit feedback between robots and object. Moreover, it remains an open question how many robots shall be employed to ensure a successful transportation. This paper’s purpose is to overcome these challenges using a novel force-based approach taking into account the robots’ actual manipulation capabilities, that is, the exerted forces. Using cost-efficient hardware, the interaction forces are measured and, what is more, explicitly controlled by a highly responsive onboard controller. Employing a tailored software architecture, the novel force-based scheme, useful for robotic manipulation beyond the benchmark problem, is probably the most flexible of its kind regarding the number of robots and the object’s shape. The controller’s functionality and performance as well as the scheme’s versatility are demonstrated by several hardware experiments.

Although several studies have revealed that fractional order controllers usually outperform conventional integer-order control solutions, fractional order controllers are not yet widely applied in industrial applications due to their complex mathematical background. In this paper, further improvements of a simple weighted sum feedback design are introduced that imitates the behavior of a fractional order controller but is free from its various formal restrictions. The proposed control solution has the main characteristics of a fractional order controller, such as finite memory length, excellent transient response with no overshoot and robust behavior, but it is placed into a much simpler mathematical framework. In the current paper, a simple derivative term was incorporated in the design which made the controller’s output more stable by completely eliminating output chattering. The proposed control method was developed for a general second-order system. It was tested in a fixed point iteration-based adaptive control scenario, through simulations using a robotic example and on experimental basis as well, utilizing a simple one-degree-of-freedom electromechanical system. The presented experiments are the first systematic investigations of the fixed point iteration-based adaptive control method.

To solve the constant contact force control problem between the end tool of a 5 degrees of freedom hybrid optical mirror processing robot and a workpiece, an adaptive impedance control method for the pneumatic servo-polishing system of the robot is designed. Firstly, the pneumatic servo-polishing control system at the end of the robot is set up. Secondly, the impedance control method for contact force is investigated based on the mathematical model of the pneumatic servo-polishing control system. Additionally, the causes of steady-state error of impedance control are analyzed theoretically, and the calculation method for steady-state error of impedance control is deduced. Finally, an indirect adaptive impedance controller based on Lyapunov Stability Principle is developed to estimate the environmental stiffness and position online, so as to reduce steady-state error and realize the tracking of polishing contact force. The simulation and experimental results suggest that the adaptive impedance control method not only recognizes that the contact force of the robot is relatively constant during the polishing process but also has high control accuracy for the force, fast-tracking response for the abrupt force, and considerable adaptability to the variable environmental stiffness.

In order to complete many complex operations and attain more general-purpose utility, robotic grasp is a necessary skill to master. As the most common essential action of robots in factory and daily life environments, robotic autonomous grasping has a wide range of application prospects and has received much attention from researchers in the past decade. However, the accurate grasp of arbitrary objects in unstructured environments is still a research challenge that has not yet been completely overcome. A complete robotic grasp system usually involves three aspects: grasp detection, grasp planning, and control subsystem. As the first step, identifying the location of the object and generating the grasp pose is the premise of successful grasp, which is conducive to planning the subsequent grasp path and the realization of the entire grasp action. Therefore, this paper conducts a literature review focusing on grasp detection technology and concludes two significant aspects: the analytic and data-driven methods. According to the previous grasp experience of the target object, this paper divides the data-driven methods into the grasp of known and unknown objects. Then it describes in detail the typical grasp detection methods and related characteristics of each classification in the grasp of unknown objects. Finally, current research status and potential research directions in this field are discussed to provide some reference for related research.

As a solution to soft material manipulation, dual-arm robots that are capable of multi-point grasping have become the latest trend due to their higher capability and efficiency. To explore further development in soft material manipulation and go beyond the hardware limit of dual arms, in this paper the robot platform “Quad-SCARA” that consists of four Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm (SCARA) is developed and introduced. With the base of hardware platform, a novel collision avoidance system designed for the motion planning of Quad-SCARA in multi-point grasping state is proposed. This system is inspired by the idea of “Buffered Voronoi Cell (BVC),” an algorithm originally proposed for multi-agent collision avoidance. After appropriate adaptation and new proposition in implementation of BVC, the experiments of folding and spreading a handkerchief are performed, and the results in simulation and robot experiments are presented and discussed for the validation and evaluation of entire system.
