This paper is devoted to the structural stability of a transonic shock passing through a flat nozzle for two-dimensional steady compressible flows with an external force. We first establish the existence and uniqueness of one-dimensional transonic shock solutions to the steady Euler system with an external force by prescribing suitable pressure at the exit of the nozzle when the upstream flow is a uniform supersonic flow. It is shown that the external force helps to stabilize the transonic shock in flat nozzles and the shock position is uniquely determined. Then we are concerned with the structural stability of these transonic shock solutions when the exit pressure is suitably perturbed. One of the new ingredients in our analysis is to use the deformation-curl decomposition to the steady Euler system developed by Weng and Xin [Sci. Sinica Math., 49 (2019), pp. 307–320] to deal with the transonic shock problem.

We introduce an approach and a software tool for solving coupled energy networks composed of gas and electric power networks. Those networks are coupled to stochastic fluctuations to address possibly fluctuating demand due to fluctuating demands and supplies. Through computational results, the presented approach is tested on networks of realistic size.

With the use of temporal derivative of flux function, a two-stage temporal discretization has been recently proposed in the design of fourth-order schemes based on the generalized Riemann problem (GRP) [21] and gas-kinetic scheme (GKS) [28]. In this paper, the fourth-order gas-kinetic scheme will be extended to solve the compressible multicomponent flow equations, where the two-stage temporal discretization and fifth-order WENO reconstruction will be used in the construction of the scheme. Based on the simplified two-species BGK model [41], the coupled Euler equations for individual species will be solved. Each component has its individual gas distribution function and the equilibrium states for each component are coupled by the physical requirements of total momentum and energy conservation in particle collisions. The second-order flux function is used to achieve the fourth-order temporal accuracy, and the robustness is as good as the second-order schemes. At the same time, the source terms, such as the gravitational force and the chemical reaction, will be explicitly included in the two-stage temporal discretization through their temporal derivatives. Many numerical tests from the shock-bubble interaction to ZND detonative waves are presented to validate the current approach.

This paper develops Runge-Kutta PK -based central discontinuous Galerkin (CDG) methods with WENO limiter for the one- and two-dimensional special relativistic hydrodynamical (RHD) equations, K = 1,2,3. Different from the non-central DG methods, the Runge-Kutta CDG methods have to find two approximate solutions defined on mutually dual meshes. For each mesh, the CDG approximate solutions on its dual mesh are used to calculate the flux values in the cell and on the cell boundary so that the approximate solutions on mutually dual meshes are coupled with each other, and the use of numerical flux will be avoided. The WENO limiter is adaptively implemented via two steps: the “troubled” cells are first identified by using a modified TVB minmod function, and then the WENO technique is used to locally reconstruct new polynomials of degree (2K+1) replacing the CDG solutions inside the “troubled” cells by the cell average values of the CDG solutions in the neighboring cells as well as the original cell averages of the “troubled” cells. Because the WENO limiter is only employed for finite “troubled” cells, the computational cost can be as little as possible. The accuracy of the CDG without the numerical dissipation is analyzed and calculation of the flux integrals over the cells is also addressed. Several test problems in one and two dimensions are solved by using our Runge-Kutta CDG methods with WENO limiter. The computations demonstrate that our methods are stable, accurate, and robust in solving complex RHD problems.

In this work, we investigate the numerical approximation of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations under the framework of discontinuous Galerkin methods. For discretization of the viscous and heat fluxes, we extend and apply the symmetric direct discontinuous Galerkin (SDDG) method which is originally introduced for scalar diffusion problems. The original compressible Navier-Stokes equations are rewritten into an equivalent form via homogeneity tensors. Then, the numerical diffusive fluxes are constructed from the weak formulation of primal equations directly without converting the second-order equations to a first-order system. Additional numerical flux functions involving the jump of second order derivative of test functions are added to the original direct discontinuous Galerkin (DDG) discretization. A number of numerical tests are carried out to assess the practical performance of the SDDG method for the two dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations. These numerical results obtained demonstrate that the SDDG method can achieve the optimal order of accuracy. Especially, compared with the well-established symmetric interior penalty (SIP) method [18], the SDDG method can maintain the expected optimal order of convergence with a smaller penalty coefficient.

We propose here a class of numerical schemes for the approximation of weak solutions to nonlinear hyperbolic systems in nonconservative form—the notion of solution being understood in the sense of Dal Maso, LeFloch, and Murat (DLM). The proposed numerical method falls within LeFloch-Mishra's framework of schemes with well-controlled dissipation (WCD), recently introduced for dealing with small-scale dependent shocks. We design WCD schemes which are consistent with a given nonconservative system at arbitrarily high-order and then analyze their linear stability. We then investigate several nonconservative hyperbolic models arising in complex fluid dynamics, and we numerically demonstrate the convergence of our schemes toward physically meaningful weak solutions.

We propose an all regime Lagrange-Projection like numerical scheme for the gas dynamics equations. By all regime, we mean that the numerical scheme is able to compute accurate approximate solutions with an under-resolved discretization with respect to the Mach number M, i.e. such that the ratio between the Mach number M and the mesh size or the time step is small with respect to 1. The key idea is to decouple acoustic and transport phenomenon and then alter the numerical flux in the acoustic approximation to obtain a uniform truncation error in term of M. This modified scheme is conservative and endowed with good stability properties with respect to the positivity of the density and the internal energy. A discrete entropy inequality under a condition on the modification is obtained thanks to a reinterpretation of the modified scheme in the Harten Lax and van Leer formalism. A natural extension to multi-dimensional problems discretized over unstructured mesh is proposed. Then a simple and efficient semi implicit scheme is also proposed. The resulting scheme is stable under a CFL condition driven by the (slow) material waves and not by the (fast) acoustic waves and so verifies the all regime property. Numerical evidences are proposed and show the ability of the scheme to deal with tests where the flow regime may vary from low to high Mach values.

This paper presents a new and better suited formulation to implement the limiting projection to high-order schemes that make use of high-order local reconstructions for hyperbolic conservation laws. The scheme, so-called MCV-WENO4 (multi-moment Constrained finite Volume with WENO limiter of 4th order) method, is an extension of the MCV method of Ii & Xiao (2009) by adding the 1st order derivative (gradient or slope) at the cell center as an additional constraint for the cell-wise local reconstruction. The gradient is computed from a limiting projection using the WENO (weighted essentially non-oscillatory) reconstruction that is built from the nodal values at 5 solution points within 3 neighboring cells. Different from other existing methods where only the cell-average value is used in the WENO reconstruction, the present method takes account of the solution structure within each mesh cell, and thus minimizes the stencil for reconstruction. The resulting scheme has 4th-order accuracy and is of significant advantage in algorithmic simplicity and computational efficiency. Numerical results of one and two dimensional benchmark tests for scalar and Euler conservation laws are shown to verify the accuracy and oscillation-less property of the scheme.

In this paper, a compact third-order gas-kinetic scheme is proposed for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. The main reason for the feasibility to develop such a high-order scheme with compact stencil, which involves only neighboring cells, is due to the use of a high-order gas evolution model. Besides the evaluation of the time-dependent flux function across a cell interface, the high-order gas evolution model also provides an accurate time-dependent solution of the flow variables at a cell interface. Therefore, the current scheme not only updates the cell averaged conservative flow variables inside each control volume, but also tracks the flow variables at the cell interface at the next time level. As a result, with both cell averaged and cell interface values, the high-order reconstruction in the current scheme can be done compactly. Different from using a weak formulation for high-order accuracy in the Discontinuous Galerkin method, the current scheme is based on the strong solution, where the flow evolution starting from a piecewise discontinuous high-order initial data is precisely followed. The cell interface time-dependent flow variables can be used for the initial data reconstruction at the beginning of next time step. Even with compact stencil, the current scheme has third-order accuracy in the smooth flow regions, and has favorable shock capturing property in the discontinuous regions. It can be faithfully used from the incompressible limit to the hypersonic flow computations, and many test cases are used to validate the current scheme. In comparison with many other high-order schemes, the current method avoids the use of Gaussian points for the flux evaluation along the cell interface and the multi-stage Runge-Kutta time stepping technique. Due to its multidimensional property of including both derivatives of flow variables in the normal and tangential directions of a cell interface, the viscous flow solution, especially those with vortex structure, can be accurately captured. With the same stencil of a second order scheme, numerical tests demonstrate that the current scheme is as robust as well-developed second-order shock capturing schemes, but provides more accurate numerical solutions than the second order counterparts.

We show that a single particle distribution for the “energy-conserving” D2Q13 lattice Boltzmann scheme can simulate coupled effects involving advection and diffusion of velocity and temperature. We consider various test cases: non-linear waves with periodic boundary conditions, a test case with buoyancy, propagation of transverse waves, Couette and Poiseuille flows. We test various boundary conditions and propose to mix bounce-back and anti-bounce-back numerical boundary conditions to take into account velocity and temperature Dirichlet conditions. We present also first results for the de Vahl Davis heated cavity. Our results are compared with the coupled D2Q9-D2Q5 lattice Boltzmann approach for the Boussinesq system and with an elementary finite differences solver for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Our main experimental result is the loss of symmetry in the de Vahl Davis cavity computed with the single D2Q13 lattice Boltzmann model without the Boussinesq hypothesis. This result is confirmed by a direct Navier Stokes simulation with finite differences.

We consider a two-step Sal’nikov reaction scheme occurring within a compressible viscous gas. The first step of the reaction may be either endothermic or exothermic, while the second step is strictly exothermic. Energy may also be lost from the system due to Newtonian cooling. An asymptotic solution for temperature perturbations of small amplitude is presented using the methods of strained coordinates and multiple scales, and a travelling wave solution with a sech-squared profile is derived. The method of lines is then used to approximate the full system with a set of ordinary differential equations, which are integrated numerically to track accurately the evolution of the reaction front. This numerical method is used to verify the asymptotic solution and investigate behaviours under different conditions. Using this method, temperature waves progressing as pulsatile fronts are detected at appropriate parameter values.

The solution of systems of hyperbolic conservation laws remains an interesting and challenging task due to the diversity of physical origins and complexity of the physical situations. The present work introduces the use of the partial differential equation (PDE) transform, paired with the Fourier pseudospectral method (FPM), as a new approach for hyperbolic conservation law problems. The PDE transform, based on the scheme of adaptive high order evolution PDEs, has recently been applied to decompose signals, images, surfaces and data to various target functional mode functions such as trend, edge, texture, feature, trait, noise, etc. Like wavelet transform, the PDE transform has controllable time-frequency localization and perfect reconstruction. A fast PDE transform implemented by the fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is introduced to avoid stability constraint of integrating high order PDEs. The parameters of the PDE transform are adaptively computed to optimize the weighted total variation during the time integration of conservation law equations. A variety of standard benchmark problems of hyperbolic conservation laws is employed to systematically validate the performance of the present PDE transform based FPM. The impact of two PDE transform parameters, i.e., the highest order and the propagation time, is carefully studied to deliver the best effect of suppressing Gibbs’ oscillations. The PDE orders of 2-6 are used for hyperbolic conservation laws of low oscillatory solutions, while the PDE orders of 8-12 are often required for problems involving highly oscillatory solutions, such as shock-entropy wave interactions. The present results are compared with those in the literature. It is found that the present approach not only works well for problems that favor low order shock capturing schemes, but also exhibits superb behavior for problems that require the use of high order shock capturing methods.

This paper develops a high-order accurate gas-kinetic scheme in the framework of the finite volume method for the one- and two-dimensional flow simulations, which is an extension of the third-order accurate gas-kinetic scheme [Q.B. Li, K. Xu, and S. Fu, J. Comput. Phys., 229(2010), 6715-6731] and the second-order accurate gas-kinetic scheme [K. Xu, J. Comput. Phys., 171(2001), 289-335]. It is formed by two parts: quartic polynomial reconstruction of the macroscopic variables and fourth-order accurate flux evolution. The first part reconstructs a piecewise cell-center based quartic polynomial and a cell-vertex based quartic polynomial according to the “initial” cell average approximation of macroscopic variables to recover locally the non-equilibrium and equilibrium single particle velocity distribution functions around the cell interface. It is in view of the fact that all macroscopic variables become moments of a single particle velocity distribution function in the gas-kinetic theory. The generalized moment limiter is employed there to suppress the possible numerical oscillation. In the second part, the macroscopic flux at the cell interface is evolved in fourth-order accuracy by means of the simple particle transport mechanism in the microscopic level, i.e. free transport and the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) collisions. In other words, the fourth-order flux evolution is based on the solution (i.e. the particle velocity distribution function) of the BGK model for the Boltzmann equation. Several 1D and 2D test problems are numerically solved by using the proposed high-order accurate gas-kinetic scheme. By comparing with the exact solutions or the numerical solutions obtained the second-order or third-order accurate gas-kinetic scheme, the computations demonstrate that our scheme is effective and accurate for simulating invisid and viscous fluid flows, and the accuracy of the high-order GKS depends on the choice of the (numerical) collision time.

In this paper, a remapping-free adaptive GRP method for one dimensional (1-D) compressible flows is developed. Based on the framework of finite volume method, the 1-D Euler equations are discretized on moving volumes and the resulting numerical fluxes are computed directly by the GRP method. Thus the remapping process in the earlier adaptive GRP algorithm [17,18] is omitted. By adopting a flexible moving mesh strategy, this method could be applied for multi-fluid problems. The interface of two fluids will be kept at the node of computational grids and the GRP solver is extended at the material interfaces of multi-fluid flows accordingly. Some typical numerical tests show competitive performances of the new method, especially for contact discontinuities of one fluid cases and the material interface tracking of multi-fluid cases.

In this paper we present recent developments concerning a Cell-Centered Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (CCALE) strategy using the Moment Of Fluid (MOF) interface reconstruction for the numerical simulation of multi-material compressible fluid flows on unstructured grids in cylindrical geometries. Especially, our attention is focused here on the following points. First, we propose a new formulation of the scheme used during the Lagrangian phase in the particular case of axisymmetric geometries. Then, the MOF method is considered for multi-interface reconstruction in cylindrical geometry. Subsequently, a method devoted to the rezoning of polar meshes is detailed. Finally, a generalization of the hybrid remapping to cylindrical geometries is presented. These explorations are validated by mean of several test cases using unstructured grid that clearly illustrate the robustness and accuracy of the new method.

In this paper, a gas kinetic scheme for the compressible multicomponent flows is presented by making use of two-species GK model in [A. D. Kotelnikov and D. C. Montgomery, A Kinetic Method for Computing Inhomogeneous Fluid Behavior, J. Comput. Phys. 134 (1997) 364-388]. Different from the conventional BGK model, the collisions between different species are taken into consideration. Based on the Chapman-Enskog expansion, the corresponding macroscopic equations are derived from this two-species model. Because of the relaxation terms in the governing equations, the method of operator splitting is applied. In the hyperbolic part, the integral solutions of the BGK equations are used to construct the numerical fluxes at the cell interface in the framework of finite volume method. Numerical tests are presented in this paper to validate the current approach for the compressible multicomponent flows. The theoretical analysis on the spurious oscillations at the interface is also presented.

In this paper, we study a class of contact smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) by introducing Riemann solvers and using high-order limiters. In particular, a promising concept of WENO interpolation as limiter is presented in the reconstruction process. The physical values relating interactional particles used as the initial values of the Riemann problem can be reconstructed by the Taylor series expansion. The contact solvers of the Riemann problem at contact points are incorporated in SPH approximations. In order to keep the fluid density at the wall rows to be consistent with that of the inner fluid wall boundaries, several lines of dummy particles are placed outside of the solid walls, which are assigned according to the initial configuration. At last, the method is applied to compressible flows with sharp discontinuities such as the collision of two strong shocks and the interaction of two blast waves and so on. The numerical results indicate that the method is capable of handling sharp discontinuity and efficiently reducing unphysical oscillations.

A new approach to high-order accuracy for the numerical solution of conservation laws introduced by Huynh and extended to simplexes by Wang and Gao is renamed CPR (correction procedure or collocation penalty via reconstruction). The CPR approach employs the differential form of the equation and accounts for the jumps in flux values at the cell boundaries by a correction procedure. In addition to being simple and economical, it unifies several existing methods including discontinuous Galerkin, staggered grid, spectral volume, and spectral difference. To discretize the dif-fusion terms, we use the BR2 (Bassi and Rebay), interior penalty, compact DG (CDG), and I-continuous approaches. The first three of these approaches, originally derived using the integral formulation, were recast here in the CPR framework, whereas the I-continuous scheme, originally derived for a quadrilateral mesh, was extended to a triangular mesh. Fourier stability and accuracy analyses for these schemes on quadrilateral and triangular meshes are carried out. Finally, results for the Navier-Stokes equations are shown to compare the various schemes as well as to demonstrate the capability of the CPR approach.

Algorithms for adaptive mesh refinement using a residual error estimator are proposed for fluid flow problems in a finite volume framework. The residual error estimator, referred to as the ℜ-parameter is used to derive refinement and coarsening criteria for the adaptive algorithms. An adaptive strategy based on the ℜ-parameter is proposed for continuous flows, while a hybrid adaptive algorithm employing a combination of error indicators and the ℜ-parameter is developed for discontinuous flows. Numerical experiments for inviscid and viscous flows on different grid topologies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms on arbitrary polygonal grids.

The Boltzmann equation (BE) for gas flows is a time-dependent nonlinear differential-integral equation in 6 dimensions. The current simplified practice is to linearize the collision integral in BE by the BGK model using Maxwellian equilibrium distribution and to approximate the moment integrals by the discrete ordinate method (DOM) using a finite set of velocity quadrature points. Such simplification reduces the dimensions from 6 to 3, and leads to a set of linearized discrete BEs. The main difficulty of the currently used (conventional) numerical procedures occurs when the mean velocity and the variation of temperature are large that requires an extremely large number of quadrature points. In this paper, a novel dynamic scheme that requires only a small number of quadrature points is proposed. This is achieved by a velocity-coordinate transformation consisting of Galilean translation and thermal normalization so that the transformed velocity space is independent of mean velocity and temperature. This enables the efficient implementation of Gaussian-Hermite quadrature. The velocity quadrature points in the new velocity space are fixed while the correspondent quadrature points in the physical space change from time to time and from position to position. By this dynamic nature in the physical space, this new quadrature scheme is termed as the dynamic quadrature scheme (DQS). The DQS was implemented to the DOM and the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). These new methods with DQS are therefore termed as the dynamic discrete ordinate method (DDOM) and the dynamic lattice Boltzmann method (DLBM), respectively. The new DDOM and DLBM have been tested and validated with several testing problems. Of the same accuracy in numerical results, the proposed schemes are much faster than the conventional schemes. Furthermore, the new DLBM have effectively removed the incompressible and isothermal restrictions encountered by the conventional LBM.
