Deadline for proposals - May 5, 2025
Since its launch in 2001, State Politics and Policy Quarterly has been a leading outlet for research on state politics, both inside the United States and cross-nationally. Through traditional research articles, field essays, research notes, methodological inquiry, and extension/replication papers, SPPQ has provided a productive space for examining any aspect of political behavior, practices, institutions, and policy sub-nationally, as well as methodologies used to study these processes.
To mark the 25th anniversary of the journal, the editors hope to publish a series of review essays (i.e.” state of the field” essays) dedicated to the impact of state politics research in political science. The team welcomes proposals for manuscripts that will address how research on state politics has evolved over the last 25 years, as viewed through the lens of publications and topics appearing in SPPQ. Manuscripts can also address what new topics and approaches should be taken up in SPPQ in the coming years.
Proposals that are accepted will go through the peer review process. The editors seek to include contributions from scholars at all stages of career, and junior-senior teams are strongly encouraged
Potential proposal topics might include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Data and methodology
- Executive policy
- Gender and politics
- Interest groups
- Judicial politics
- Legislative politics
- Policy diffusion
- Political economy
- Public opinion
- Public policy/ innovation
- Race, ethnicity, and politics
Proposals should be no more than one page in length and sent directly to the editorial team at [email protected]. Proposals should include short biographies for all authors and a date by which the authors can submit their manuscript.
We hope to receive our first manuscripts by August 2025, but can consider some manuscripts as late as November 2025. Submitted manuscripts may be up to the length of a research article (approximately 8,000-10,000 words).
The deadline for proposals is May 5, 2025, and authors will be notified if their manuscript proposal has been selected no later than May 15, 2025.
