We suggest that Book Five of the Republic, wherePlato discusses the status of women in the guardian class, is asuperb source of Platonic insight. For it is precisely thediscussion of women that is most vulnerable to co-optation by themodern vernacular of interest, a vernacular to which theRepublic is vehemently opposed. If studentscome to appreciate an alternative perspective regarding this mostsensitive of modern issues, the full impact of the Socratic approachis available to them.
