L'articolo illustra alcune forme di anfore fino ad ora sconosciute trovate nell'Ager Falernus in siti provvisti di fornaci. La loro identificazione è particolarmente importante, in quanto sembrano postdatare l'anfora forma Dressel 2–4, il tipico contenitore commerciale di vino del primo periodo imperiale prodotto in questa zona. Se le nuove anfore erano destinate al trasporto del vino dagli inizi del secondo secolo d.C. in poi, ciò costituirebbe una valida evidenza archeologica a sostegno dell'impressione ricavata dalle fonti di una produzione ed esportazione continua del vino falerno fino agli inizi del quarto secolo almeno.

Ever since Professor Gatti's epoch-making paper in 1960, the Circus Flaminius and its buildings have been the subject of intensive argument. The problems involved are many and complex; this paper is an attempt to make sense of them by concentrating in the first instance on the implications of the ancient evidence, both as to the nature of the Circus itself (Section I) and on the history of its development and the buildings within it (II). There follows a discussion of Gatti's theory about the position of the Circus and of Professor Marchetti Longhi's objections to it (III), and a critical consideration of some of the ideas advanced on the basis of Gatti's position (IV), in particular Dr. Coarelli's identification of the temple of Bellona (V). A brief conclusion (VI) sums up what I believe the combined evidence implies.

Fu dall'inizio del primo secolo a.C. che i Romani impararono a formulare dissertazioni su tutti gli argomenti (e non semplicemente testi elementari) in conformità alle tecniche di definizione e divisione, in definitiva derivate dalla dialettica greca, sebbene essi le applichino con estrema semplicità ed entusiasmo. Il ruolo di queste tecniche è considerato, tra gli altri, nei lavori di Varro e Cicero; come la loro applicazione nei discussi argomenti di giurisprudenza. The origin of the imperial civil service is generally attributed to Augustus, and its development to Claudius; but a precise understanding of what were the original elements due to Augustus and what the additions of Claudius is to seek, despite much sound piecemeal work on the activity of the latter. The problem has not been tackled as a whole. To speak of the ‘civil service’ of Augustus is perhaps to use a metaphor of dubious value. The term ‘civil service’ implies a regular and highly organised body of bureaucratic officials forming an administrative and executive personnel which, under the general guidance of the Government, or, in classical terminology, of the Magistrates, manages, often in minute detail, the affairs of the country concerned. Such systems were not unknown in antiquity, notably in Ptolemaic Egypt, but such was not the system of the Principate in general, even at the fullest development of the procuratorial service. Still less was such a system originated by Augustus, despite the retention in Egypt of Ptolemaic methods.

The hill towns of the Roman Campagna form a distinctive class of nucleated settlement, characterised by strong natural defences, strengthened with ditches, walls and towers. There are two main classes of site: those situated at the end of promontories, and those built on ‘pedestals’. Suitable locations, the product of rapid dissection of the soft volcanic tuff, are common throughout the Campagna. The majority of these medieval sites is now deserted, a trend which reflects the isolated position of these settlements. Few of the medieval villages have been examined archaeologically and little is known of their origins and development. Documentary sources suggest that they grew up in the ninth and tenth centuries, with the decay of the classical estates, which was briefly arrested by the foundation of the Papal domuscultae in the mid to late eighth century.

The central and revolutionary period of Roman history runs from the tribunate of Tiberius Gracchus to Augustus' seizure of sole power and establishment of a constitutional monarchy. Caesar's heir prevailed through the name of Caesar—‘puer qui omnia nomini debes’; and he perpetuated the name, as title, cult and system, to distant ages. Yet Augustus as Princeps did not invoke Caesar's rule to provide precedent and validity for his own. Quite the reverse. What rank and role in the transformation of the Roman State should therefore be assigned to the Dictatorship of Caesar—mere episode or cardinal moment and organic part?

The problem is large, the debate continuous and acute. During the last generation, opinions about Caesar's imperial policy and the shape which he intended to give to the Roman State have ranged to the widest extremes, roping in for parallel or contrast the figures of Sulla, Pompeius and Augustus.

Questo studio letterario contribuisce a sviluppare un aspetto sottovalutato della storia culturale di Roma, raccogliendo l'evidenza testuale contemporanea riguardo le attitudini all'investimento nell'architettura privata nel II secolo a.C. Scarso materiale archeologico soprawive a documentare le case di questo periodo, ma una stretta attenzione ai testi esistenti rivela un alto livello di sofisticazione nelle valutazioni morali ascritte alia costruzione e decorazioni domestiche. La mia analisi inizia con una ricognizione dei frammenti più importanti delle orazioni di Catone il Vecchio, e in seguito si concentra quasi esclusivamente sulla Mostellaria di Plauto. Alcuni passaggi di questi lavori contraddicono l'immagine che autori romani più tardi forniscono dei Romani di epoca medio-repubblicana come disinteressati a case costose o elaborate e non corrotti da un desiderio per il lusso. The excavations here described were undertaken by the British School at Rome on behalf of the Superintendency of Antiquities for Southern Etruria, through the courtesy of its Superintendent, Professor Renato Bartoccini, who has done so much to foster active archaeological research within an area that is undergoing drastic and archaeologically disastrous change, and with the active and cordial collaboration of his staff. The purpose of the excavations was the strictly limited one of examining, while there was yet time, one of the few remaining stretches of the defences of Veii where ploughing in recent years had revealed (and is now rapidly destroying) substantial remains of the ancient walls. In the course of the work such other features as came to light were examined and recorded so far as this limited purpose permitted; but no attempt was, or could be, made to follow up the larger implications of these discoveries, which must await another occasion and other hands.

The work was undertaken in two short campaigns, each of between two and four weeks' duration. The first of these, in November and December 1957, was hampered by the ravages of Asian influenza, the work of supervision being shared in succession by Mrs. Selina Tomlin (now Mrs. Ballance), Mr. Guy Duncan and Mr. Michael Ballance; and it is greatly to their credit that, despite these difficulties, a satisfactory and coherent result was obtained. The second campaign took place in October-November 1958, and was supervised throughout by Mrs. P. W. Murray Threipland. Both in the field and the work-room a great deal of volunteer help was received both from students of the School and from friends and visitors, outstanding among the latter being Mrs. Anne Kahane and Mrs. Betty Eastwood and, during the second campaign, Mr. Eric Gray.

The landscape of central Tyrrhenian Italy became increasingly engraved with roads cut deep in the ground in the course of the seventh and sixth centuries bc. This development was mainly for pragmatic reasons, such as the need for better infrastructure and transport facilities resulting from increased vehicular traffic between and within regions. In addition to providing logistic benefits, road-cuttings also contributed to developing the socio-political aspects of the proto-urban centres of central Italy through their monumentality, which arguably was utilized in politicizing territorial landscapes as well as in enhancing funerary rituals. In this paper I shall examine road-cuttings as instruments of urbanization in iron age and Archaic central Italy by attempting to present a point of view in which the road-cuttings in central Italy are seen not only as pragmatic facilities, but also as building blocks of landscapes of power and identity. This goal is approached by using the methods of landscape archaeology and phenomenology in a study of 110 road-cuttings from central Italy and assessing their relations to their physical surroundings.

Indagini archeologiche condotte nel tempio di Venere a Pompei hanno dimostrato che il santuario fu costruito su un triplice portico e che degli alberi furono sistemati nella corte intorno a tre lati del tempio. Questo paesaggio è contemporaneo alia costruzione del tempio romano della metà del I secolo a.C, ed è uno dei boschi consacrati piu antichi nel mondo romano per il quale si abbiano evidenze archeologiche. I risultati del lavoro archeologico gettano luce non solo sul paesaggio del sito, ma anche su vari importanti aspetti correlati con gli sviluppi originari del recinto e dell'uso del suolo nella colonia di Pompei. Una riflessione dell'evidenza archeologica e storica e delle circostanze sociali della città nel I secolo a.C. suggerisce che il tempio e il bosco sacro degli dei tutelari della città simboleggiavano sia l'identità politica sia la divina sanzione della Pompei romana.

This article discusses the evidence for the concentration and centralization of late prehistoric settlement in central Italy, using the territory of Nepi as an example of settlement aggregation in southern Etruria. This example helps to explain the regional developments leading to urbanization and state formation in Etruria from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age. The article also publishes new sites with late prehistoric ceramic material from the Neolithic or Epineolithic to the Iron Age in the territory of Nepi found during the Nepi Survey Project. This new evidence is discussed together with previously published material, and presented as further evidence that the developments leading to the occupation of naturally defended sites in the Final Bronze Age had their origins in the Middle Bronze Age. Similarly, the analysis, aided by agricultural and GIS modelling, suggests that the hiatus in the settlement and its dislocation after an apparent break between the Final Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age may have been caused by population pressure. After the settlement aggregated in one centre at Nepi, there are signs of further expansion in the Iron Age.

Oggetto della campagna di scavo 1962 al fosso della Crescenza è stato un mausoleo di età Giulioclaudia visibile nell'argine del fosso, insieme con i resti di un edificio di fine II secolo d.C. accanto ad essa. Questo articolo raccoglie una serie di studi sulla topografia della via Veientana, sulla stratigrafia dello scavo, sulla natura e le cause del deposito alluvionale posteriore all'abbandono dell'edificio, sulla decorazione architettonica del mausoleo, gli affreschi rinvenuti negli strati di fondazione dell'edificio più tardo e sui materiali rinvenuti. Infine i dati relativi a questo sito vengono inseriti nel quadro storico-topografico complessivo dell'area in epoca romana.
