Forensic entomology is an important component of criminal investigations, providing information surrounding a death using region-specific data on the local necrophagous community. To understand the community within the Metro Vancouver region of British Columbia, Canada, a field study monitored the abundance and diversity of necrophagous Calliphoridae (Diptera) over a nine-month period in distinct terrestrial environments. Baited bottle traps (n = 9) were deployed weekly for 12-hour intervals in three different environments. Species, sex, and gravidity of collected specimens were determined. Bivariate analyses revealed significant relationships between species, geographic location, and month of collection, suggesting that Calliphoridae species composition is influenced by habitat type and seasonal shifts in temperature. Sex ratios and reproductive ranges of Calliphoridae differed among the habitats sampled.

For solitary bees, nesting substrate availability may limit population growth. Here, we investigate the nesting of a locally abundant bee Osmia conjuncta Cresson (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae) in empty shells of exotic snails, Cepaea spp. Held (Stylommatophora: Helicidae), in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. A literature review determined that O. conjuncta was sparsely distributed throughout its range, with a low relative abundance except for the Niagara Region of Ontario, Canada, three sites in Maryland, United States of America, and the focal study area in Hamilton, Ontario. The Hamilton field survey of five grassland bee communities found O. conjuncta to be the most abundant bee species. The average relative abundance was 18.7%, peaking at 87% on one spring day. A survey of 1088 empty snail shells was done at the site with the highest O. conjuncta abundance. It revealed an average of 10.87 empty shells per square metre with cocoons in 9.8% of the shells, averaging 1.6 cocoons per nest. The relation between shell traits and cocoon presence indicated that O. conjuncta preferred nesting in shells with intermediate size and colour and avoided shells near shrubs. The presence of Cepaea snails increased O. conjuncta populations with potential consequences to the local bee assemblage.

We evaluated the diversity and spatiotemporal emergence patterns of parasitoid wasp species in the genus Eurytoma Illiger (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae) associated with leaf galls induced by Diplolepis variabilis Bassett (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) throughout the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada. We collected D. variabilis galls throughout the region, recorded adult Eurytoma emergence times, extracted mitochondria DNA from a subset of the emergents, and used cytochrome c oxidase 1 and cytochrome b amplificons to assign sampled individuals to species. We also assayed for the bacterial endosymbiont Wolbachia to evaluate the incidence of thelytoky in Eurytoma. Eurytoma showed an extended emergence period and a significant right skew in male emergence. We recorded six Eurytoma species, one of which appears to be previously undescribed. The greatest diversity of Eurytoma species occurs in the north of the sampled area. Five of the six species showed Wolbachia infection in at least some individuals, and the most abundant and widespread species, Eurytoma imminuta Bugbee, showed high Wolbachia infection levels and an all-female population, which strongly indicates endosymbiont-induced thelytoky. Our results demonstrate that gall communities are locally variable, and we suggest that future studies be undertaken to quantify variation in community composition at more local scales than has been past practice.

Intermittent streams that periodically cease surface flow have long been understudied in ecology and underrepresented in conservation policy. However, they currently account for 30–50% of the global river network, and that number is rising due to anthropogenic water extraction, land-use change, and climate change. We explored the Coleoptera biodiversity of the south Pacific coast region of British Columbia, Canada, using pitfall traps at perennial and naturally intermittent stream reaches, in shoreline, dry streambed, and riparian habitats, in both flowing (spring and early summer) and nonflowing (late summer) phases. We found that habitats around perennial reaches had significantly greater abundance of Coleoptera individuals than did those around intermittent reaches. However, neither habitat type nor flow regime was a significant predictor of taxon richness, and intermittent stream sites featured unique taxa that were not found near perennial streams. This aligns with recent results from other taxonomic groups; that is, finding that intermittent ecosystems can host high taxonomic diversity of Coleoptera, on par with or even greater than that of perennial streams. Because intermittent streams will likely become more prevalent within the global river network, a better understanding of how different species use these habitats is needed to inform appropriate biodiversity conservation efforts and flow management.

Relatedness within groups is influenced by the mating patterns of founders: the more parents that contribute to a group, the lower the relatedness of their offspring. Xylocopa virginica (Hymenoptera: Apidae) is a facultatively social bee in which low relatedness is influenced by sequential maternity. We investigated whether multiple paternity, which would occur if egg-laying females mate multiple times, might also contribute to low relatedness among female nestmates. We used two approaches to investigate how frequently females mate polyandrously. First, we used visual observations of mating behaviour to estimate mating frequencies and to evaluate evidence for temporal variation in female receptivity to mates. Second, we used a data set of microsatellite genotypes to evaluate evidence for multiple paternity based on inferred proportions of full and half sisters. Based on visual observations, we inferred a female mating frequency of 1.1 (harmonic mean). Females were more receptive early in their first nestmate provisioning phase and less receptive in their second brood provisioning phase. Based on microsatellite genotypes analysed with COLONY software, we inferred that 5–44% of female sibships included maternal half sisters, implying female mating frequencies between 1.13 and 1.41 (harmonic means). Thus, multiple mating contributes to the low group relatedness found in Xylocopa virginica.

Narrow-spectrum insecticides are currently used to control populations of spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana Clemens (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), in eastern Canada. However, these could have nontarget impacts on other caterpillars – some of which may serve as alternative or alternate hosts to key parasitoids – that are also susceptible to control tactics. This study was conducted to determine how the insecticides, Bacillus thuringiensis variety kurstaki (Btk) and tebufenozide, used to control spruce budworm populations, impact caterpillar communities and associated parasitism rates. Post-treatment field sampling of caterpillars was conducted in 2018 and 2019 in New Brunswick, Canada, at sites treated with either Btk or tebufenozide and at control sites. Caterpillar species richness and abundance, community structure, and parasitism rates were assessed using molecular analyses for 659 collected caterpillars. We found that insecticide applications had no significant impact on abundance, species richness, or parasitism rate relative to the measurements made in the control sites. Nonetheless, a significantly higher caterpillar abundance and lower parasitism rate occurred in Btk-treated sites than in tebufenozide-treated sites. Overall, however, Btk and tebufenozide treatments did not negatively affect the non-budworm caterpillar community under the present conditions of low caterpillar densities, suggesting that parasitoids have alternative and alternate hosts after treatments that target the spruce budworm.

The swede midge, Contarinia nasturtii (Kieffer) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), is invasive to North America, where it was first reported in Ontario, Canada. It is now established in eastern Canada and from eastern Minnesota in the Midwest to the northeastern seaboard of the United States of America. Swede midge is a serious pest of brassicaceous plants, including vegetable and oilseed crops. To ensure its early detection in the Northern Great Plains, a monitoring programme was established using pheromone traps located primarily along the edges of canola fields from North Dakota, United States of America, northwest to the Peace River region, in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada. In North Dakota, 117 trap sites were monitored between 2015 and 2021. In western Canada, monitoring occurred on a small scale from 2006 to 2011, and 521 trap sites were monitored from 2013 to 2021. Swede midge was not detected in canola grown in the Northern Great Plains between 2006 and 2021. Partners in North Dakota and western Canada intend to maintain the monitoring programme to support early detection of swede midge if it does continue to disperse northwestwards. The monitoring programme contributes to outreach activities and fosters farmer and agronomist participation in pest management (i.e., community science) in the Northern Great Plains.

We examine the implications for intercontinental dispersal of the extinct ant genus, Titanomyrma Archibald et al. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Formiciinae), following the discovery of its first fossil in Eocene temperate upland Canada. Modern Holarctic distributions of plants and animals were in part formed by dispersals across Late Cretaceous through early Eocene Arctic land bridges. Mild winters in a microthermal Arctic would allow taxa today restricted to the tropics by cold intolerance to cross, with episodic hyperthermal events allowing tropical taxa requiring hot climates to cross. Modern ants with the largest queens inhabit low latitudes of high temperature and mild coldest months, whereas those with smaller queens inhabit a wide variety of latitudes and climates. Gigantic and smaller formiciine ants (Titanomyrma and Formicium Westwood) are known from Europe and North America in the Eocene. The new Canadian Titanomyrma inhabited a cooler upland. It is incomplete, indistinctly preserved, and distorted in fossilisation, and so we do not assign it to a species or erect a new one for it. The true size of this fossil is unclear by this distortion: small size would support gigantism in Titanomyrma requiring hot climates and dispersal during hyperthermals; if it was large, it may have been cold-winter intolerant and able to have crossed during any time when the land bridge was present.

We record 392 species or morphospecies of bees (Hymenoptera: Apoidea) for Manitoba, Canada, which is 154 more species than reported in 2015 and includes five new generic records since 2015 (Ashmeadiella, Brachymelecta, Eucera, Neolarra, and Triepeolus). Thirteen new records reported here are new for Canada: Calliopsis (Nomadopsis) australior Cockerell, Perdita (Perdita) tridentata Stevens, Brachymelecta interrupta (Cresson), Diadasia (Dasiapis) ochracea (Cockerell), Melissodes bidentis Cockerell, Nomada crawfordi crawfordi Cockerell, Nomada fuscicincta Swenk, Nomada sphaerogaster Cockerell, Nomada xantholepis Cockerell, Triepeolus cf. grindeliae Cockerell, Dianthidium (Dianthidium) parvum (Cresson), Coelioxys (Xerocoelioxys) nodis Baker, and Megachile (Megachiloides) dakotensis Mitchell. We remove the following species from the list of Manitoba bees based on re-examination of voucher material: Andrena (Ptilandrena) geranii Robertson, Andrena (Rhacandrena) robertsonii Dalla Torre, Andrena (Simandrena) nasonii Robertson, Andrena (Trachandrena) ceanothi Viereck, Andrena (Trachandrena) quintilis Robertson, Lasioglossum (Hemihalictus) pectoraloides (Cockerell), Lasioglossum (Lasioglossum) forbesii (Robertson), and Dianthidium (Dianthidium) concinnum (Cresson). We propose that Nomada alpha paralpha Cockerell, 1921 and N. alpha dialpha Cockerell, 1921 are junior synonyms of N. alpha Cockerell, 1905. Nomada arenicola Swenk, 1912 is considered a junior synonym of N. fervida Smith, 1854. Protandrena albertensis (Cockerell) and Neolarra mallochi Michener are recognised as valid species. We provide additional notes on taxonomy, nomenclature, and behaviour for select species in the list.

Understanding movements of Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) into berry fruit crops from wild-fruit hosts in borders of semi-natural agroecosystems, such as lowbush blueberry, is important to determining harvesting time and managing wild-fruit diversity near crops. This study aimed to inventory the wild-fruit hosts associated with lowbush blueberry (Ericaceae) production in Québec, Canada, near the limits of lowbush blueberry’s eastern North American range. We also tested the hypothesis that fruit traits of berry fruit species present in or near lowbush blueberry fields might explain field infestation levels. Flies of both sexes emerged from five wild-fruit species in 2016, to which six more species were added in 2017. The most productive wild-fruit hosts were Cornus canadensis (Cornaceae) and Aralia hispida (Araliaceae) (> 100 emerged flies/100 g of fruit) in 2016, to which Prunus pensylvanica (Rosaceae) and Rubus idaeus (Rosaceae) were added in 2017. Among nine variables considered in statistical modelling (fruit size, sugar content, and reflected colour bands) and taxonomic family (a nominal variable), none could explain field infestation levels over two years. In lab tests comparing fruits of Cornus canadensis, a common weed within fields, and lowbush blueberries, mated D. suzukii females laid twice as many eggs on blueberries, but both species were equally suitable for development.

Dietary honey bee royal jelly increases insect growth rates and adult body size. Royal jelly as a dietary supplement could enhance mass insect production by increasing the body size of mass-reared model species. To determine the effect of royal jelly on a cricket species, Gryllodes sigillatus Walker (Orthoptera: Gryllidae), farmed for human consumption, we ran two experiments. We tested the dose-dependent response of G. sigillatus to royal jelly using a range of diets across 0–30% w/w royal jelly. We also measured the individual-level life history responses to royal jelly over time by individually rearing G. sigillatus nymphs on two separate diets: half were fed a commercial cricket diet, and half were fed the same diet mixed with 15% w/w fresh royal jelly. We found sex-dependent effects: females fed the royal jelly diet were 30% heavier, and this effect was driven by significantly longer abdomens containing 67% more eggs compared to those fed the standard diet. Female mass was optimised at approximately 17% w/w royal jelly. Our results reveal that although a royal jelly dietary supplement can increase the yield of mass-reared insects, the life history responses are species and sex specific.

The Poweshiek skipperling (Oarisma poweshiek) is endemic to the tall grass prairie in North America and is now critically endangered globally. Existing populations are scattered among tall grass prairie remnants. However, the host food plants eaten by Poweshiek skipperling larvae, the vegetative and microclimatic descriptions of immature and adult microhabitats, and O. poweshiek behaviour in Manitoba are unknown. We followed Poweshiek skipperling adults in their natural habitat to locate microhabitats where eggs were laid and to observe larval foraging behaviour and development. We measured vegetative, structural, and microclimatic characteristics of microhabitats used by immatures and documented the host species larvae consumed, their general behaviour (on plants; movement within microhabitats), and their developmental schedules. Larvae ate Andropogon gerardi, Muhlenbergia richardsonis, Sporobolus heterolepis, and Schizachyrium scoparium (all Poaceae) in natural tall grass prairie. Larvae appeared to navigate microhabitats to locate host food plants, alternating between shoots of various species throughout their development. Microhabitats seemed to be more open, with drier microclimates, than areas where eggs were not laid. This improved understanding of larval feeding patterns, adult behaviours, and microhabitat attributes may help local grassland stewards and researchers reduce the list of possible causes of decline and identify potential solutions to recover the Poweshiek skipperling.

The pea leaf weevil, Sitona lineatus Linnaeus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is an invasive pest of field pea, Pisum sativum Linnaeus, and faba bean, Vicia faba Linnaeus (Fabaceae). Larvae feed on leguminous root nodules and associated Rhizobium leguminosarum Frank (Rhizobiacea) nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Larval feeding causes economic damage, but the current method to assess nodule damage is laborious. Leghaemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying molecule in root nodules, is degraded as larvae feed. Measurement of leghaemoglobin could be an alternative method to estimate larval damage. Here, we developed a fluorometric assay to measure the variation in haem fluorescence, which relates to leghaemoglobin content, from nodulated roots. Roots were collected from caged faba bean plants with or without weevil infestation. Faba bean yield and haem fluorescence were inversely correlated with the percent damaged nodules. A plant growth score was positively correlated with haem fluorescence. This method can be used to assess nodule damage in pulse crops from pea leaf weevil and potentially from other biotic stresses, and it may have wider application to studies of nitrogen fixation.

The emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), is a serious pest of ash (Fraxinus spp.) (Oleaceae) in North America. Control of emerald ash borer is difficult in natural forest settings; therefore, a classical biological control programme is the most feasible management option for this invasive, nonnative insect. Here, we report the first Canadian release and establishment of parasitoids Tetrastichus planipennisi Yang (Hymeoptera: Eulophinae), Oobius agrili Zhang and Huang (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), and Spathius galinae Belokobylskij and Strazanac (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) in natural forests in Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick, Canada for the control of emerald ash borer. Releases of T. planipennisi were made from 2013 to 2019, O. agrili from 2015 to 2019, and S. galinae from 2017 to 2019. Trees from release sites were destructively sampled to rear out adult emerald ash borers and parasitoids 1–3 years after parasitoid release. Recoveries of T. planipennisi were made at 81% of release sites (13 of 16) 1–2 years after release, and O. agili were recovered from 29% of release sites (4 of 14) 1–3 years after release. Spathius galinae was not recovered. These data provide important information for the development and deployment of a successful biological control programme for the management of emerald ash borer in Canada.

The distribution and diversity of fauna of remote regions, including much of the boreal forest, are incompletely known. We took part in extensive biodiversity surveys in the Far North of Ontario (north of 51° N), Canada from 2009 to 2015. In the family Carabidae Latreille (Coleoptera), we report new records and range extensions for 600 specimens representing 99 species. We documented the first record for Canada of one species, the first records for Ontario of 11 species, and range extensions (> 100 km from the known range) for 70 species. The range extensions were largely in a northwards direction, with a median distance of 650 km and a positive skew in the distribution of these distances. These new records fill an important gap in knowledge of the distribution of this family.

Wrangel Island, Russia, because of its geographic position, harsh climate, yet surprising biodiversity, has been geobotanically studied and divided into various subzones. The distributions of the three species of the subgenus Tipula (Arctotipula) (Diptera: Tipulidae) that have been collected on Wrangel Island are related to these subzones. The predominantly Nearctic species, T. (A.) besselsoides Alexander, 1919, is newly recorded for Russia as well as on this island, where it was found to be the most widespread of the three species. The Holarctic species, T. (A.) salicetorum Siebke, 1870, is rarer, being found mostly in the climatically harsh northern and eastern areas of the island. The third species, T. (A.) oklandi Alexander, 1922, which was thought to have been more widespread formerly, is here confirmed only for Russia. It was collected in the warmest part of the island, and the female is illustrated for the first time. An illustrated key to both male and female adults is presented. Distribution maps are provided for all species, and the data on the distribution of oklandi have been adjusted.

In the Canadian Maritimes, many beekeepers rent honey bee, Apis mellifera Linnaeus (Hymenoptera: Apidae), hives to growers of lowbush blueberry, Vaccinium angustifolium (Ericaceae), for pollination services. Anecdotally, hives have less vigour following pollination, potentially due to higher Nosema spp. (Nosematidae) spore loads, the microsporidian causing nosemosis. We undertook a study to determine whether sending honey bee hives to lowbush blueberry fields for pollination (blueberry hives) results in higher Nosema spp. spore loads relative to hives remaining in apiaries (home hives). Nosema spp. spore loads were quantified using light microscopy. Nosema apis and Nosema ceranae were differentiated using polymerase chain reaction and sequencing. Nosema spp. spore loads were greatest in April and May and declined to low levels from June to September. Ninety-eight per cent of Nosema detections were positive for N. ceranae. In April, blueberry hives had a lower spore load than home hives did; however, in June, spore loads were significantly higher in blueberry hives. No other differences in Nosema spp. spore loads were observed between hive types. We conclude that Nosema ceranae is the dominant Nosema species in the Canadian Maritimes and that using hives for lowbush blueberry pollination does not appear to influence long-term Nosema spp. spore loads.

Swede midge, Contarinia nasturtii (Kieffer) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), causes severe economic losses in Brassica Linnaeus (Brassicaceae) crops in its invasive range in North America. Larvae feed within the meristem of their host plants, causing deformed heads, stems, and leaves. Pheromone-mediated mating disruption is particularly promising for swede midge management in high-value vegetable crops because its use is allowed in organic production. However, a major challenge to developing economically viable mating disruption is that the stereospecific three-component swede midge pheromone is costly to synthesise. In broccoli (Brassica oleracea Linnaeus var. italica) field plots, we tested whether stereospecific, lower-cost racemic, and single-component pheromone blends resulted in trap shutdown and reduced crop damage compared to nontreated controls. We found a significant reduction in males caught in three-component stereospecific and racemic pheromone–treated plots but not in the single-component treatments. Although marketable broccoli yields were not higher overall in the pheromone-treated plots compared with those in the controls, yields were significantly higher in the three-component stereospecific treatment in year 2. Therefore, the three-component stereospecific blend shows promise as a pheromone blend for swede midge mating disruption. However, due to high cost and levels of crop damage across all treatments, additional research is necessary to optimise swede midge mating disruption.

The alder bark beetle, Alniphagus aspericollis (LeConte), is known to overwinter as larvae and adults in the main stems of red alder, Alnus rubra (Bongard). Observations of adult alder bark beetles in the branch and bud nodes of planted saplings during the winter led to the hypothesis that these microhabitats represent alternative overwintering sites for the beetle in mature trees. To test this hypothesis, we surveyed crown branches at three coastal British Columbia locations, sampling three trees in 2003 and 2004 and three additional trees (nine branches per tree) in 2018–2019. Adult beetles were found overwintering inside sites excavated in the branch and bud nodes throughout the crowns of mature trees. Branch type, defined by growth class, and tree affected the overall distribution and likelihood of overwintering site occupancy among the three trees sampled intensively in 2018–2019, whereas overwintering site age (old versus new (current year)) affected the frequency of site occupancy across all six trees. We suggest that overwintering in tree crowns evolved from late-summer maturation feeding in new shoots and that the majority of beetles abandon terminal shoots as temperatures fall, moving deeper into the crown to overwinter preferentially in older branch tissues that offer greater thermal protection.
