Chemical thinning in apple orchards is a commonly used technique for improving yield. The objective of this work was to quantify bloom intensity of individual trees using color images, and estimate the time for the peak of the bloom. Image acquisition campaigns were conducted in an apple orchard with Golden Delicious variety during two growing seasons. Image processing algorithms were developed to detect flowers. The correlation between the manual and automatic estimation of bloom intensity at the day of the peak was 0.90 and 0.97 for 2014 and 2015 respectively. Based on the above relationships, maps of blooming intensity were derived and its variability was established.

This study aimed to evaluate levels of beef cow fertility using calving interval (CI; measured in days) as a measure, and investigate the effects of breed, season, year and progeny gender on CI. The CI data included 273 764 records collected between 1997 and 2012 and included the seven most common breeds (and their crosses) in Northern Ireland (Charolais, Limousin, Belgian Blue, Simmental, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Aberdeen Angus and Hereford), accounting for 94.1% of beef dams recorded. Mean CI for all cows was 395 days, 30 days longer than the optimum 365 days. Charolais and Belgian Blue dams had the longest CI (P<0.05). Cows older than 144 months had a longer CI (P<0.05) compared with cows younger than 144 months. Charolais sires had a shorter subsequent CI of 392 days (P<0.05) compared with the other breeds. Cows calving in June had the shortest subsequent CI (376 days; P<0.05), whereas cows calving in November had the longest subsequent CI (410 days). Progeny gender did not significantly affect CI. This study establishes the level of beef cow fertility using CI as a measure in Northern Ireland is sub optimal and there are opportunities for improvement. Factors identified as influencing CI included dam breed, sire breed and month of parturition. This knowledge can be used to direct breeding programmes and inform knowledge transfer protocol to improve sustainability of beef production.

In France, the horse population has been expanding since 1995 to reach 950 000 heads in 2010, representing about 15% of the total European horse population today. This growth is the result of the development of pony-riding for children and the increasing interest of French people in recreational riding and horse-betting. These changes offer major advantages to the different horse sectors, especially in the context of declining State support, increasing international competition on the horse market, societal changes regarding animal welfare, decreasing horse-meat consumption and harmonization of regulations at European level.

This paper presents an inspection system integrated into an on-ground autonomous platform with range of approximately 80 km. The vehicle is prepared to autonomously cover a field following a predefined route plan. Two types of cameras were integrated in the platform. An RGB-D sensor and a reflex camera were placed in a fixture and connected to a high-performance computer. The heterogeneous information acquired from the RGB-D was later integrated to automatically generate 3D maps of the crops by using custom software developed in the authors’ previous work. The inspection system performance was tested in actual vineyards by conducting several samplings in 2016. Results show that the proposed technology is viable and can provide complementary information to other inspection alternatives.

In agriculture, tank mixtures with several plant protection products (PPP) are frequently used, which makes it impossible to apply specific plant protection products to specific areas. Therefore a prototype of a field sprayer with a direct injection system was developed as part of a joint project between the company Herbert Dammann GmbH and the Julius Kühn- Institute. This framework enables a real-time site-specific dosing of plant protection products and water from separate containers with direct mixing before the application without residual amounts. Results show a high accuracy in the working range of the selected dosing pumps by means of test bench measurements and field tests Field tests for site-specific weed control in winter wheat demonstrate the applicability of the system under practical conditions and enable a precise application of various herbicides.

Simple active radiometer sensors, such as RapidScan, enable agronomic decision-making and phenotyping within commercial wheat fields and experiments. The objectives of this study were: 1 - to evaluate the accuracy of quantitative biomass and nitrogen uptake estimation by the RapidScan, and 2 - to evaluate yield loss estimation based on NDVI. The RapidScan sensor was used as an assessment tool in the following studies: (i) over 3 years, 518 wheat samples were monitored during the vegetative growth period for biomass and aboveground nitrogen uptake and (ii) wheat cultivars were tested in an additional 4 field experiments, which were scanned weekly and correlated with grain yield. Results showed that accurate biomass estimation is limited up to about 100 g DM m−2. Grain yield, actual and potential, estimation is highly affected by the emergence date. The results showed that the use of a proximal-sensing technique allows for rapid and accurate crop monitoring and yield estimation, but emphasizing limitations in future use as well.

Controlled traffic farming (CTF) systems aim to reduce soil compaction by restricting machinery field traffic to permanent traffic lanes. Grass-clover silage production is generally associated with intensive field traffic, resulting in reduced silage clover content. If CTF can increase yield and clover content in grass-clover leys, this would reduce the need for grain and expensive protein concentrate in dairy cow feed rations. A mixed integer programming model was developed to evaluate the potential profitability of CTF in a dairy farm context. Existing field trial data were used to calculate the expected yield outcome of CTF, based on reductions in trafficked area. The results revealed that CTF increased profitability by up to €50/ha. Total machinery costs are likely to increase on converting to CTF, but variable machinery costs are likely to decrease.

The aim of this study was to analyse cow reproductive performance on 37 Irish suckler beef farms and determine how reproductive efficiency influences farm profitability. The main reproductive factors associated with gross output value per livestock unit (GO/LU) were average age at first calving (r=−0.19, P<0.01) and number of months with a calving (r=−0.15, P<0.05). A 1 month increase in average age at first calving was shown to reduce GO/LU by €14 across suckler farms. Average age at first calving was positively correlated with calving interval (r=0.21, P<0.001) and the number of months with a calving (r=0.18, P<0.01). Number of months with a calving was also positively correlated with calf mortality (r=0.21, P<0.01). However, these relationships between reproductive variables had no statistically significant impact on farm financial performance. It is therefore concluded that additional analysis at animal level is required to determine key reproductive indicators contributing to farm profitability.

To use VRI systems, a field is divided into irrigation management zones (IMZs). While IMZs are dynamic in nature, most of IMZs prescription maps are static. High-resolution thermal images (TI) coupled with measured atmospheric conditions have been utilized to map the within-field water status variability and to delineate in-season IMZs. Unfortunately, spaceborne TIs have coarse spatial resolution and aerial platforms require substantial financial investments, which may inhibit their large-scale adoption. Three approaches are proposed to facilitate large-scale adoption of TI-based IMZs: 1) increase of the capacity of aerial TI by enhancing their spatial resolution; 2) sharpening the spatial resolution of satellite TI by fusing satellite multi-spectral images in the visible-near-infrared (VIS-NIR) range; 3) increase the capacity of aerial TI by fusing satellite multi-spectral images in the VIS-NIR range. The scientific and engineering basis of each of the approaches is described together with initial results.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of a Crop Circle sensor-based precision nitrogen (N) management (PNM) strategy in different winter wheat cropping systems under on-farm conditions in North China Plain (NCP). Four farmer’s fields were selected for on-farm experiments in Laoling County, Shandong Province of NCP in 2015-2016. In each field, the PNM strategy was evaluated in two winter wheat cropping systems: farmer’s conventional management (FCM) and regional optimum crop management (ROCM). In each cropping system, there were two N management strategies: 1) FCM or ROCM; 2) PNM. The results indicated that the PNM strategy significantly increased partial factor productivity (PFP) by 29% in the FCM system, but did not have any significant improvement in the ROCM system. The ROCM system, using either regional optimum N management or PNM, significantly increased both grain yield and PFP than the FCM system.

Biomass production is a diagnosis tool for the evaluation of the effect of climate, crop genomic and management. The differences in biomass accumulation are necessary for the assessment of the fertilization necessities in the strategies for variable nitrogen doses. Remote sensing-based data provide a direct observation of the differences in canopy development across time and space and can be integrated into the physiological basis of crop growth models to provide estimates of biomass production at fine scales. The proposed approach was applied in a wheat field in Albacete, Spain and the results were compared with measurements of aboveground biomass and yield maps obtained by a combined-mounted grain yield monitor.

This paper focuses on maturity evaluation derived by a color camera for a sweet pepper robotic harvester. Different color and morphological features for sweet pepper maturity were evaluated. Side view and bottom view of sweet paper were analyzed and compared for their ability to classify into 4 maturity classes. The goal of this study was to differentiate between the two center classes which are difficult to separate. Statistical analysis of 13 different features in reliance to the maturity classification and the views indicated the best features for classification. The results show that the features that can be used for classification between the two central classes from both bottom and side views are: Hue range, Equal2Real – the ratio between the equivalent equal sized circle perimeter to the shape perimeter and Area2Peri – the ratio between the area to the perimeter.

Greenhouse gas emissions from livestock production have a major impact on the environment. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is an accepted method to assess those environmental impacts associated with all stages of products life from cradle to grave, and is used to determine the carbon footprint (CF) of animal origin products. CF is just an environmental indicator to assess sustainability of livestock products, such as milk, beef, pork, chicken, eggs, etc. and is used on products packaging as a so-called carbon label to inform supply chain professionals about the relative impacts of different products and activities. From the published studies who assessed the impact of production of milk, beef, lamb, pork, chicken and eggs using LCA, it is concluded that production of 1 kg of beef used most land and energy and had highest global warming potential, followed by production of 1 kg of lamb, pork, chicken, eggs and milk. However, it should be pointed out that LCA results for livestock products do not include environmental consequences of competition for land between humans and animals, and consequences of land-use changes.

Yield mapping techniques have only recently started to be implemented by the Californian wine grape industry, but the advancement has necessitated new processing methods for large vineyards. The process for mapping large blocks harvested with multiple machines has only recently occurred and implies that their yield monitors have to be calibrated and corrected to the same scale. Here we discuss two methods for processing yield maps at the commercial level. Method 1 depends on many calibrations with delivered fruit weight to a winery. Method 2 normalizes raw files automatically can reduce total processing time by up to 90%.

The goal of this work was the assessment of commercial vineyard water status using on-the-go thermal imaging. On-the-go thermal imaging acquisition was conducted with a thermal camera operating at 1.20 m distance from the canopy, mounted on a quad moving at 5 km/h. Canopy temperature, cross water stress index (CWSI) and stomatal conductance index (Ig) were strongly and significantly correlated to stem water potential (Ψstem) in east and west side of the canopy. For CWSI, the values of the coefficient of determination (R2) were 0.88*** and 0.73*** for east and west sides, respectively. As regards the index Ig, its relationships with Ψstem showed R2=0.89*** and R2=0.77*** for east and west sides, respectively. These results are promising and evidence the potential of on-the-go thermal imaging to become a new tool to evaluate the vineyard water status.
