Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are short-duration radio transients that occur at random times in host galaxies distributed all over the sky. Large field of view instruments can play a critical role in the blind search for rare FRBs. We present a concept for an all-sky FRB monitor using a compact all-sky phased array (CASPA), which can efficiently achieve an extremely large field of view of $\sim10^4$ square degrees. Such a system would allow us to conduct a continuous, blind FRB search covering the entire southern sky. Using the measured FRB luminosity function, we investigate the detection rate for this all-sky phased array and compare the result to a number of other proposed large field-of-view instruments. We predict a rate of a few FRB detections per week and determine the dispersion measure and redshift distributions of these detectable FRBs. This instrument is optimal for detecting FRBs in the nearby Universe and for extending the high-end of the FRB luminosity function through finding ultraluminous events. Additionally, this instrument can be used to shadow the new gravitational-wave observing runs, detect high-energy events triggered from Galactic magnetars and search for other bright, but currently unknown transient signals.

Due to the rich phenomenology and extreme magnetic conditions, magnetars will be targets of great interest for the upcoming polarimetry space missions. In particular, the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE), recently launched in December 2021, will operate in the 2–8 keV range. This will open a new window to study the polarized, persistent X-ray emission from magnetars. In this talk, I will present simulations of IXPE observations of magnetars using the IXPEObsSim package. I will discuss future prospect to discriminate between different magnetar’s emission mechanisms, as well as a potential detection of the signal of vacuum birefringence using IXPE.

We argue that measurements of X-ray polarization using the recently launched Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer will answer many open questions about magnetars in particular the physical state of their surfaces, whether vacuum birefringence exists, and the nature of the hard X-ray emission from these objects. We outline the capabilities of the instrument, specific models and the results of simulations for the magnetar 4U 0142+61.

Anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) and Soft gamma repeaters (SGRs) form together a single class of astrophysical sources, commonly associated to magnetars. New-generation X-ray polarimeters will play a key role in assessing the nature of these sources by directly probing the star magnetic field. In the highly magnetized environment radiation is expected to be strongly polarized and such a measure will be easily within reach of IXPE and eXTP. Polarization measurements will eventually confirm the presence of ultra-strong magnetic fields, probing the magnetar scenario. In this work we will discuss theoretical expectations for the polarization signature of AXPs and SGRs and present numerical simulations for the detector response of the polarimeters currently under construction. We will also show how these sources can be used to test vacuum birefringence, a QED effect predicted by Heisemberg and Euler in the Thirties and not experimentally verified as yet.

The strongest known magnetic fields are found in neutron stars. I briefly discuss how they are inferred from observations, as well as the evidence for their time-evolution. I go on to show how these extremely strong fields are actually weak in terms of their effects on the stellar structure. This is also the case for magnetic stars on the upper main sequence and magnetic white dwarfs, which have similar total magnetic fluxes, perhaps pointing to an evolutionary connection. I suggest that a stable hydromagnetic equilibrium (containing a poloidal and a toroidal field component) could be established soon after the birth of the neutron star, aided by the strong compositional stratification of neutron star matter, and this state is slowly eroded by non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic processes such as beta decays and ambipolar diffusion in the core of the star and Hall drift and breaking of the solid in its crust. Over sufficiently long time scales, the fluid in the neutron star core will behave as if it were barotropic, because, depending on temperature and magnetic field strength, beta decays will keep adjusting the composition to the chemical equilibrium state, or ambipolar diffusion will decouple the charged component from the neutrons. Therefore, the still open question regarding stable hydromagnetic equilibria in barotropic fluids will become relevant for the evolution, at least for magnetar fields, which are likely too strong to be stabilized by the solid crust.

The key point of studying AXPs/SGRs (anomalous X-ray pulsars/soft gamma-ray repeaters) is relevant to the energy budget. Historically, rotation was thought to be the only free energy of pulsar until the discovery of accretion power in X-ray binaries. AXPs/SGRs could be magnetars if they are magnetism-powered, but would alternatively be quark-star/fallback-disk systems if more and more observations would hardly be understood in the magnetar scenario.

We have analyzed the physical implications of Fermi observations of magnetars. Observationally, no significant detection is reported in Fermi observations of all magnetars. Then there are conflicts between outer gap model in the case of magnetars and Fermi observations. One possible explanation is that magnetars are wind braking instead of magnetic dipole braking. In the wind braking scenario, magnetars are neutron stars with strong multipole field. A strong dipole field is no longer required. A magnetism-powered pulsar wind nebula and a braking index smaller than three are the two predictions of wind braking of magnetars. Future deeper Fermi observations will help us make clear whether they are wind braking or magnetic dipole braking. It will also help us to distinguish between the magnetar model and the accretion model for AXPs and SGRs.
