We explore the interplay between $\omega $-categoricity and pseudofiniteness for groups, and we conjecture that $\omega $-categorical pseudofinite groups are finite-by-abelian-by-finite. We show that the conjecture reduces to nilpotent p-groups of class 2, and give a proof that several of the known examples of $\omega $-categorical p-groups satisfy the conjecture. In particular, we show by a direct counting argument that for any odd prime p the ($\omega $-categorical) model companion of the theory of nilpotent class 2 exponent p groups, constructed by Saracino and Wood, is not pseudofinite, and that an $\omega $-categorical group constructed by Baudisch with supersimple rank 1 theory is not pseudofinite. We also survey some scattered literature on $\omega $-categorical groups over 50 years.

The goal of this note is to completely determine the rings for which every nonunit is a product of a nilpotent and an idempotent (in either order).

We generalize Uhlenbeck’s generator theorem of ${\mathcal{L}}^{-}\operatorname{U}_{n}$ to the full rational loop group ${\mathcal{L}}^{-}\operatorname{GL}_{n}\mathbb{C}$ and its subgroups ${\mathcal{L}}^{-}\operatorname{GL}_{n}\mathbb{R}$, ${\mathcal{L}}^{-}\operatorname{U}_{p,q}$: they are all generated by just simple projective loops. Recall that Terng–Uhlenbeck studied the dressing actions of such projective loops as generalized Bäcklund transformations for integrable systems. Our result makes a nice supplement: any rational dressing is the composition of these Bäcklund transformations. This conclusion is surprising in the sense that Lie theory suggests the indispensable role of nilpotent loops in the case of noncompact reality conditions, and nilpotent dressings appear quite complicated and mysterious. The sacrifice is to introduce some extra fake singularities. So we also propose a set of generators if fake singularities are forbidden. A very geometric and physical construction of $\operatorname{U}_{p,q}$ is obtained as a by-product, generalizing the classical construction of unitary groups.

Building on MacDonald’s formula for the distance from a rank-one projection to the set of nilpotents in $\mathbb {M}_n(\mathbb {C})$, we prove that the distance from a rank $n-1$ projection to the set of nilpotents in $\mathbb {M}_n(\mathbb {C})$ is $\frac {1}{2}\sec (\frac {\pi }{\frac {n}{n-1}+2} )$. For each $n\geq 2$, we construct examples of pairs $(Q,T)$ where Q is a projection of rank $n-1$ and $T\in \mathbb {M}_n(\mathbb {C})$ is a nilpotent of minimal distance to Q. Furthermore, we prove that any two such pairs are unitarily equivalent. We end by discussing possible extensions of these results in the case of projections of intermediate ranks.

The word $w=[x_{i_{1}},x_{i_{2}},\ldots ,x_{i_{k}}]$ is a simple commutator word if $k\geq 2,i_{1}\neq i_{2}$ and $i_{j}\in \{1,\ldots ,m\}$ for some $m>1$. For a finite group $G$, we prove that if $i_{1}\neq i_{j}$ for every $j\neq 1$, then the verbal subgroup corresponding to $w$ is nilpotent if and only if $|ab|=|a||b|$ for any $w$-values $a,b\in G$ of coprime orders. We also extend the result to a residually finite group $G$, provided that the set of all $w$-values in $G$ is finite.

We consider a group G that does not have the independence property and study the definability of certain subgroups of G, using parameters from a fixed elementary extension G of G. If X is a definable subset of G, its trace on G is called an externally definable subset. If H is a definable subgroup of G, we call its trace on G an external subgroup. We show the following. For any subset A of G and any external subgroup H of G, the centraliser of A, the A-core of H and the iterated centres of H are external subgroups. The normaliser of H and the iterated centralisers of A are externally definable. A soluble subgroup S of derived length ℓ is contained in an S-invariant externally definable soluble subgroup of G of derived length ℓ. The subgroup S is also contained in an externally definable subgroup X ∩ G of G such that X generates a soluble subgroup of G of derived length ℓ. Analogue results are discussed when G is merely a type definable group in a structure that does not have the independence property.

Let $G$ be a finite group. A subgroup $H$ of $G$ is said to be $E$-supplemented in $G$ if there is a subgroup $T$ of $G$ such that $G= HT$ and $H\cap T\leq {H}_{eG} $, where ${H}_{eG} $ denotes the subgroup of $H$ generated by all those subgroups of $H$ which are $S$-quasinormally embedded in $G$. In this paper, some new characterisations of $p$-supersolubility of finite groups are given under the assumption that some primary subgroups are $E$-supplemented.

In this paper we find all finite rings with a nilpotent group of units. It was thought that the answer to this was already given by McDonald in 1974, but as was shown by Groza in 1989, the conclusions that had been reached there do not hold. Here, we improve some results of Groza and describe the structure of an arbitrary finite ring with a nilpotent group of units, thus solving McDonald’s problem.

We give bounds on the distance from a non-zero idempotent to the set of nilpotents in the set of $n\,\times \,n$ matrices in terms of the norm of the idempotent. We construct explicit idempotents and nilpotents which achieve these distances, and determine exact distances in some special cases.

Call a non-Moufang Bol loop minimally non-Moufang if every proper subloop is Moufang and minimally nonassociative if every proper subloop is associative. We prove that these concepts are the same for Bol loops which are nilpotent of class two and in which certain associators square to 1. In the process, we derive many commutator and associator identities which hold in such loops.

A group G is locally graded if every finitely generated nontrivial subgroup of G has a nontrivial finite image. Let N (2, k)* denote the class of groups in which every infinite subset contains a pair of elements that generate a nilpotent subgroup of class at most k. We show that if G is a finitely generated locally graded N (2, k)*-group, then there is a positive integer c depending only on k such that G/Zc (G) is finite.

It is shown that if R is a 2-torsion-free semi-prime ring such that [xy, [xy, yx]] = 0 for all x, y ∈ R, then R is commutative.

Let R be a commutative ring with an automorphism ∞ of finite order n. An element f of the skew polynomial ring R[x, α] is nilpotent if and only if all coefficients of fn are nilpotent. (The case n = 1 is the well-known description of the nilpotent elements of the ordinary polynomial ring R[x].) A characterization of the units in R[x, α] is also given.
