The relationship between the EM algorithm and the Bock-Aitkin procedure is described with a continuous distribution of ability (latent trait) from an EM-algorithm perspective. Previous work has been restricted to the discrete case from a probit-analysis perspective.

When latent variables are used as outcomes in regression analysis, a common approach that is used to solve the ignored measurement error issue is to take a multilevel perspective on item response modeling (IRT). Although recent computational advancement allows efficient and accurate estimation of multilevel IRT models, we argue that a two-stage divide-and-conquer strategy still has its unique advantages. Within the two-stage framework, three methods that take into account heteroscedastic measurement errors of the dependent variable in stage II analysis are introduced; they are the closed-form marginal MLE, the expectation maximization algorithm, and the moment estimation method. They are compared to the naïve two-stage estimation and the one-stage MCMC estimation. A simulation study is conducted to compare the five methods in terms of model parameter recovery and their standard error estimation. The pros and cons of each method are also discussed to provide guidelines for practitioners. Finally, a real data example is given to illustrate the applications of various methods using the National Educational Longitudinal Survey data (NELS 88).

Multidimensional item response theory (MIRT) models have generated increasing interest in the psychometrics literature. Efficient approaches for estimating MIRT models with dichotomous responses have been developed, but constructing an equally efficient and robust algorithm for polytomous models has received limited attention. To address this gap, this paper presents a novel Gaussian variational estimation algorithm for the multidimensional generalized partial credit model. The proposed algorithm demonstrates both fast and accurate performance, as illustrated through a series of simulation studies and two real data analyses.

Equivalence of marginal likelihood of the two-parameter normal ogive model in item response theory (IRT) and factor analysis of dichotomized variables (FA) was formally proved. The basic result on the dichotomous variables was extended to multicategory cases, both ordered and unordered categorical data. Pair comparison data arising from multiple-judgment sampling were discussed as a special case of the unordered categorical data. A taxonomy of data for the IRT and FA models was also attempted.

In a number of psychological studies, answers to reasoning vignettes have been shown to result from both intuitive and deliberate response processes. This paper utilizes a psychometric model to separate these two response tendencies. An experimental application shows that the proposed model facilitates the analysis of dual-process item responses and the assessment of individual-difference factors, as well as conditions that favor one response tendency over another one.

Nested logit item response models for multiple-choice data are presented. Relative to previous models, the new models are suggested to provide a better approximation to multiple-choice items where the application of a solution strategy precedes consideration of response options. In practice, the models also accommodate collapsibility across all distractor categories, making it easier to allow decisions about including distractor information to occur on an item-by-item or application-by-application basis without altering the statistical form of the correct response curves. Marginal maximum likelihood estimation algorithms for the models are presented along with simulation and real data analyses.

When modeling the relationship between two nominal categorical variables, it is often desirable to include covariates to understand how individuals differ in their response behavior. Typically, however, not all the relevant covariates are available, with the result that the measured variables cannot fully account for the associations between the nominal variables. Under the assumption that the observed and unobserved variables follow a homogeneous conditional Gaussian distribution, this paper proposes RC(M) regression models to decompose the residual associations between the polytomous variables. Based on Goodman's (1979, 1985)RC(M) association model, a distinctive feature of RC(M) regression models is that they facilitate the joint estimation of effects due to manifest and omitted (continuous) variables without requiring numerical integration. The RC(M) regression models are illustrated using data from the High School and Beyond study (Tatsuoka & Lohnes, 1988).
