The presented research investigates the impact of interference on the performance of aircraft Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers with a specific focus on the behaviour of Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) position quality indicators. Several experiments were performed with different aircraft types, such as Airbus, Boeing, Beechcraft King Air B350 or Tecnam, and using various intensities of GNSS jamming. The behaviour of various quality indicators, such as the Navigation Integrity Category, Navigation Accuracy Category, Source Integrity Level and System Design Assurance transmitted in different types of ADS-B messages, is analysed. We investigate not only situations where the quality indicators drop to zero, but also the complete evolution of the changes in the indicators as a function of the increasing power of the jamming signal. Based on the analysis of changes in the ADS-B quality indicators, the estimation of the most likely interference signal power required to discontinue the tracking of an already acquired GPS L1 Coarse/Acquisition signal is made. Additionally, the interference signal power to prevent re-acquisition is also estimated. The findings improve the understanding of interference effects and can support the development of robust interference mitigation techniques in aviation applications.

The threat of GNSS interference poses a great danger to many critical infrastructure systems including air navigation. With a focus on mitigating this threat, this paper proposes a methodology for detecting GNSS interference. The methodology utilises the quality indicator NACp transmitted in ADS-B messages and GPS almanac data for interference detection. The NACp indicator enables estimation of the position error derived from GPS, which is compared with the HDOP value of the GPS satellite constellation. Based on this comparison, the developed detection algorithm determines whether the aircraft is affected by jamming. The detection methodology is evaluated on datasets obtained during deliberate experiments with GPS jamming. The proposed methodology provides a way to detect GNSS interference, facilitating mitigation of its impact on air traffic operation.

Recently, the idea of applying “jamming” of appropriate media has been exploited for a novel continuum robot design. It is completed by applying vacuum in a robot structure filled with granular media. The backbone deformation and motion are achieved by controlling the fluid pressure. A jammable robotic manipulator does not certainly follow constant curvature during bending, that is, gravitational loads cause section sag. The kinematics describes the deformation of continuum manipulators. This formulation is expected to facilitate additional synthesis and analysis on workspace. This paper presents a Jacobian-based approach to obtain the forward kinematics solution. The proposed kinematic formulation in this paper tries to combine the key advantages of the techniques in constant curvature and variable curvature models. Hence, the deformation of any arbitrary bending is modeled. The workspace synthesis is continued by kinematic analysis, and in this regard, the manipulability measure is computed. This is an important improvement when compared with existing work for this kind of manipulators. It shows how manipulability measure can determine the workspace quality, where usually reachability is used for robot’s capabilities representation. As a result, the forward kinematics and manipulability analysis based on a piecewise-constant-curvature approximation are discussed in the simulation. The simulation has been carried out according to the fabricated experimental robot.

Pulse compression technique allows a radar to achieve the resolution of a short pulse and the energy of a long pulse simultaneously, without the requirement of high-power transmission. Therefore, pulse compression radars have a low probability of intercept capability. The common types of pulse compression signals are frequency modulated waveforms and phase-coded waveforms, which have different properties. The optimum radar signal should have good immunity against deceptive jamming, good Doppler tolerance to detect high-speed targets, and low time-sidelobe level to detect weak targets nearby the strong ones. This paper reviews the current research in the commonly used radar signals, and presents their pros and cons, and compares between them in terms of Doppler tolerance, time-sidelobe level, as well as immunity against jamming in order to provide a reference for the researchers in the field of radar systems and electronic warfare.

A new two-phase model for concentrated suspensions is derived that incorporates a constitutive law combining the rheology for non-Brownian suspension and granular flow. The resulting model exhibits a yield-stress behaviour for the solid phase depending on the collision pressure. This property is investigated for the simple geometry of plane Poiseuille flow, where an unyielded or jammed zone of finite width arises in the centre of the channel. For the steady states of this problem, the governing equations are reduced to a boundary value problem for a system of ordinary differential equations and the conditions for existence of solutions with jammed regions are investigated using phase-space methods. For the general time-dependent case a new drift-flux model is derived using matched asymptotic expansions that takes into account the boundary layers at the walls and the interface between the yielded and unyielded region. The drift-flux model is used to numerically study the dynamic behaviour of the suspension flow, including the appearance and evolution of an unyielded or jammed regions.

The benefits of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and in particular GPS have been demonstrated worldwide, and continue to accrue in the form of new applications. Today, some mission critical applications (largely driven by safety) mostly in aviation and to a lesser extent maritime, rely on a number of techniques for the provision of integrity monitoring services. However, for many applications such as those associated with the emergency services, road user charging and personal navigation devices, no such monitoring exists and service validation is limited due to technical and cost constraints. The problem is exacerbated by a recent increase in more challenging problems, particularly in the security industry, in which jamming devices have been used to disrupt the use of GPS. This paper presents a new approach for a cost effective local solution to the problems above, at the individual user level, by providing the user with information on Quality of Service (QoS). The approach is based on the deployment of a single or network of probes supported by an existing regional network. The probes communicate with a central server and are designed to detect localised events whilst the regional network isolates space segment anomalies. The latter is addressed in detail in this paper in terms of design methodology and performance, using the Ordnance Survey's UK GNSS network.

In this paper, jamming analyses of the three dimensional dual peg-in-hole are presented. First, for a three dimensional dual peg-in-hole, possible contact states are enumerated and geometric analyses are presented. Second, the contact forces are described by the screw theory in three dimensions. The force/moment equations for static equilibrium states of three dimensional dual-peg insertions are derived. Third, jamming diagrams are obtained. Eleven kinds of possible jamming diagrams are analyzed. Finally, an experiment of a dual peg-in-hole assembly is presented to show the effectiveness of the above analyses.
