There are several ways to convert a closure or interior operation to a different operation that has particular desirable properties. In this paper, we axiomatize three ways to do so, drawing on disparate examples from the literature, including tight closure, basically full closure, and various versions of integral closure. In doing so, we explore several such desirable properties, including hereditary, residual, and cofunctorial, and see how they interact with other properties such as the finitistic property.

Natural immunity to breast and prostate cancers is predicted by a novel, saturatedordered mutation model fitted to USA (SEER) incidence data, a prediction consistent withthe latest ideas in immunosurveillance. For example, the prevalence of natural immunity tobreast cancer in the white female risk population is predicted to be 76.5%; this immunitymay be genetic and, therefore, inherited. The modeling also predicts that 6.9% of WhiteFemales are born with a mutation necessary to cause breast cancer (the hereditaryform) and, therefore, are at the highest risk of developing it. By contrast,16.6% of White Females are born without any such mutation but are nonetheless susceptibleto developing breast cancer (the sporadic form). The modeling determinesthe required number of ordered mutations for a cell to become cancerous as well as themean time between consecutive mutations for both the sporadic and hereditary forms of thedisease. The mean time between consecutive breast cancer mutations was found to varybetween 2.59 - 2.97 years, suggesting that such mutations are rare events and establishingan upper bound on the lifetime of a breast cell. The prevalence of immunity to breastcancer is predicted to be 79.7% in Blacks, 86.5% in Asians, and 85.8% in Indians.Similarly, the prevalence of immunity to prostate cancer is predicted to be 67.4% forWhites, 50.5% for Blacks, 77.7% for Asians, and 78.6% for Indians. It is of paramountimportance to delineate the mechanism underlying immunity to these cancers.

The familial variant of cardiac myxoma is known to be an autosomally dominant disease. Early diagnosis, and removal of the tumours, are of great importance. In this regard, echocardiography is considered the simplest and most reliable diagnostic method. We report our experience with echocardiographic diagnosis of a family with atrial myxomas.

A positive answer to a question of Müller is given: any semi-perfect complete hereditary Noetherian prime ring $R$ has a weakly symmetric self-duality sending every ideal $I$ to its cycle-neighbour $X$. Consequently, the factor rings $R/I$ and $R/X$ are isomorphic without using the 1984 results of Dischinger and Müller.

Let P be a hereditary property of words, i.e., an infinite class of finite words such that every subword (block) of a word belonging to P is also in P. Extending the classical Morse-Hedlund theorem, we show that either P contains at least n+1 words of length n for every n or, for some N, it contains at most N words of length n for every n. More importantly, we prove the following quantitative extension of this result: if P has m ≤ n words of length n then, for every k ≥ n + m, it contains at most ⌈(m + 1)/2⌉⌈(m + 1)/2⌈ words of length k.

Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death in the USA. In the past decade, tremendous progress has been made in the identification and understanding of the genetic factors related to prostate cancer development. Unlike many other types of cancers, only a small fraction of prostate cancer cases are aggressive and life-threatening. The factors related to prostate cancer development and progression appear complex and diverse. This review summarises some of the important findings in the areas of genome and gene expression abnormalities in prostate cancer, and aims to provide a comprehensive view of new developments in these areas.

Cowden’s disease is a rare autosomal dominant condition with characteristic mucocutaneous papillomatous lesions. These lesions are mucocutaneous markers for increased risk of malignancies in the thyroid, breast and the gastrointestinal tract. We discuss the case of a 50-year-old female patient who presented with oral and cutaneous papillomoas and a past history of breast malignancy. Important management aspects of these patients are considered.
