We present an hierarchical Bayes approach to modeling parameter heterogeneity in generalized linear models. The model assumes that there are relevant subpopulations and that within each subpopulation the individual-level regression coefficients have a multivariate normal distribution. However, class membership is not known a priori, so the heterogeneity in the regression coefficients becomes a finite mixture of normal distributions. This approach combines the flexibility of semiparametric, latent class models that assume common parameters for each sub-population and the parsimony of random effects models that assume normal distributions for the regression parameters. The number of subpopulations is selected to maximize the posterior probability of the model being true. Simulations are presented which document the performance of the methodology for synthetic data with known heterogeneity and number of sub-populations. An application is presented concerning preferences for various aspects of personal computers.

Risk behavior has substantial consequences for health, well-being, and general behavior. The association between real-world risk behavior and risk behavior on experimental tasks is well documented, but their modeling is challenging for several reasons. First, many experimental risk tasks may end prematurely leading to censored observations. Second, certain outcome values can be more attractive than others. Third, a priori unknown groups of participants can react differently to certain risk-levels. Here, we propose the censored mixture model which models risk taking while dealing with censoring, attractiveness to certain outcomes, and unobserved individual risk preferences, next to experimental conditions.

Models and parameters of finite mixtures of multivariate normal densities conditional on regressor variables are specified and estimated. We consider mixtures of multivariate normals where the expected value for each component depends on possibly nonnormal regressor variables. The expected values and covariance matrices of the mixture components are parameterized using conditional mean- and covariance-structures. We discuss the construction of the likelihood function, estimation of the mixture model with regressors using three different EM algorithms, estimation of the asymptotic covariance matrix of parameters and testing for the number of mixture components. In addition to simulation studies, data on food preferences are analyzed.

An old problem in personnel psychology is to characterize distributions of test validity correlation coefficients. The proposed model views histograms of correlation coefficients as observations from a mixture distribution which, for a fixed sample size n, is a conditional mixture distribution h(r|n) = Σjλjh(r; ρj, n), where R is the correlation coefficient, ρj are population correlation coefficients and λj are the mixing weights. The associated marginal distribution of R is regarded as the parent distribution underlying histograms of empirical correlation coefficients. Maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters ρj and λj can be obtained with an EM algorithm solution and tests for the number of components t are achieved after the (one-component) density of R is replaced with a tractable modeling density h(r; ρj, n). Two illustrative examples are provided.

This paper presents a new methodology concerned with the estimation of ultrametric trees calibrated on subjects' pairwise proximity judgments of stimuli, capturing subject heterogeneity using a finite mixture formulation. We assume that a number of unobserved classes of subjects exist, each having a different ultrametric tree structure underlying the pairwise proximity judgments. A new likelihood based estimation methodology is presented for those finite mixtures of ultrametric trees, that accommodates ultrametric as well as other external constraints. Various assumptions on the correlation of the error of the dissimilarities are accommodated. The performance of the method to recover known ultrametric tree structures is investigated on synthetic data. An empirical application to published data from Schiffman, Reynolds, and Young (1981) is provided. The ability to deal with external constraints on the tree-topology is demonstrated, and a comparison with an alternative clustering based method is made.

In this paper, we propose a Bayesian framework for estimating finite mixtures of the LISREL model. The basic idea in our analysis is to augment the observed data of the manifest variables with the latent variables and the allocation variables. The Gibbs sampler is implemented to obtain the Bayesian solution. Other associated statistical inferences, such as the direct estimation of the latent variables, establishment of a goodness-of-fit assessment for a posited model, Bayesian classification, residual and outlier analyses, are discussed. The methodology is illustrated with a simulation study and a real example.

Most of the real-life populations are heterogeneous and homogeneity is often just a simplifying assumption for the relevant statistical analysis. Mixtures of lifetime distributions that correspond to homogeneous subpopulations were intensively studied in the literature. Various distributional and stochastic properties of finite and continuous mixtures were discussed. In this paper, following recent publications, we develop further a mixture concept in the form of the generalized α-mixtures that include all mixture models that are widely explored in the literature. We study some main stochastic properties of the suggested mixture model, that is, aging and appropriate stochastic comparisons. Some relevant examples and counterexamples are given to illustrate our findings.
