This communication designs and investigates a twin-port microstrip antenna loaded with a metasurface (MS). The proposed MS works in two ways: (i) artificial ground plane for radiator and (ii) as an ideal absorber of normal incoming waves at the same time. A stair shaped slot is loaded on rectangular patch for creating circularly polarized wave in between 835–894 MHz. Antenna port slots oriented in a mirror manner increase isolation by 25 dB. To act as a validation tool, the suggested antenna was built and its executions in individually operating modes evaluated by statistical and experimental analysis. It is shown that combining the patch and absorber results in a well-matched antenna in between 710–980 MHz with improved gain (more than 3.0 dBi). The proposed antenna design effectively used for UHF (Ultra High Frequency)radio-frequency identification (RFID) applications, which is due to its ability to mitigate multipath reflection issues and incorrectRFID reading.

In this study, a high-isolation multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) microstrip patch antenna (MPA), which utilizes an orthogonal mode cancellation method is proposed. This method employs TM10 and TM01 modes, which are simultaneously excited in the rectangular passive MPA. Initially, a rectangular decoupling structure featuring polarization rotation characteristics is designed. Further studies show that by loading the polarization conversion parasitic structure (PCPS), the electric field of the spatial coupling wave can be transformed from the x-polarized TM10 mode to the y-polarized TM01 mode. Therefore, TM10 and TM01 modes from the excited antenna and decoupling structure are concurrently coupled to the passive antenna, forming an evident weak-field region on the passive antenna. Placing the feeding probe of the passive MPA within the weak-field region prevents signal reception at the port. Consequently, this results in an extremely low mutual coupling of −49 dB at a resonant frequency of 5.8 GHz. Finally, a prototype of the proposed antenna is fabricated and tested, and the measured results closely match the simulated results. Additionally, it is observed that PCPS slightly influences the performance of the MIMO antenna.

In this paper, the design of a circularly polarized (CP) multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system is presented, utilizing a dielectric resonator (DR). This presented antenna system is subsequently integrated with a multifunctional filter, all meticulously structured on a single substrate. The multifunctional filter operates in three modes: reconfigurable band-pass and band-reject filter as well as all-pass filter. The overall structure works as a tunable filtenna. The designed filtenna is expanded into a two-port MIMO system on a unified substrate, providing strong port isolation below −28.5 dB. The overall dimension of proposed radiator is 180 × 180 × 1.6 mm3. The value of peak gain is 5.19 dBic. By switching the states of PIN diodes, the designed filtenna operates as a sensing and communicating antenna for interweave and underlay cognitive radios (CRs). The proposed antenna supports the CP waves within the working band, i.e., 3.6–4.5 GHz. The simulated results are validated by comparing them with the measured results showing less variation among them. MIMO parameters, including the envelope correlation coefficient and diversity gain, have been calculated for the proposed filtenna, representing its suitability for 5G-CR applications.

A two-port ceramic-based antenna loaded with partially reflecting surface (PRS) is structured and explored. Fan-shaped slot is utilized to create circularly polarized wave in both frequency ranges. Dual frequency ranges are due to hybrid mode creation inside the ceramic material, i.e. HEM11δ and HEM12δ modes. PRS is used to change the phase gradient, which in turn tilts the radiation beam (±35°) obtained from different port in opposite direction. This concept is useful to reduce the envelop correlation coefficient using far-field. Experimental verification confirms that the designed antenna works from 26.1 to 27.5 GHz and 31.7 to 33.6 GHz along with less than 3-dB axial ratio from 26.5 to 27.1 GHz and 31.9 to 33.1 GHz respectively. Orthogonal placement of ports introduces the concept of polarization diversity and decreases the coupling between ports by an amount of −25 dB. Good gain value (up to 7.0 dBi) and better value of diversity performance make the designed radiator applicable for 5 G millimeter-wave uses.

The design of low-profile Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) antennas for various 5G applications is a topic of huge interest in academia, research, and telecommunication sector. In this aspect, a compact and low-profile 5G MIMO antenna has been designed and analyzed for various 5G applications, specifically for the 24 GHz bands (24.25–24.45 GHz and 25.05–25.25 GHz) and local multipoint distribution system band (27.5–28.35 GHz) of the 5G spectrum. The proposed antenna structure is 20 × 20 × 1 mm3 in dimension. Two spade-shaped radiators composed of Copper (annealed) material are placed orthogonally to improve isolation and maintain signal diversity. Rogers RT 5880 is used as the material for substrate. The antenna exhibits a wide bandwidth of 21.5–28.5 GHz. The mutual isolation |S21| has been maintained ≤29 dB due to the insertion of a T-shaped parasitic strip in between the radiating elements. Novelty in design and superiority in performance has been observed when compared with related antenna categories.

An ultra-wideband (UWB) and compact-size four-port multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna with a footprint of 34 mm × 34 mm fed by an asymmetric coplanar strip (ACS) is investigated. The proposed antenna is composed of four orthogonally placed identical modified elliptical-shaped radiators and achieves an impedance bandwidth of 3.4–12.2 GHz. By etching two inverted L-shaped slots in the radiator element, WLAN band and X-band are rejected in the operating communication range. Because of the usage of a meander line decoupler, the isolation enhancement at the 8–12 GHz band is achieved and the isolation is more than 18 dB for most of the UWB range. The performance of the proposed antenna is studied in terms of isolation between each port, radiation pattern, current distribution, gain, envelope correlation coefficient, diversity gain, and total active reflection coefficient. The compact size and reduced complexity make the proposed design highly suitable for portable devices.

A compact, two-element textile MIMO antenna is designed with enhanced isolation by using modification in the ground, open-ended slots along with shorting pins. Maximum 27.8 dB isolation is achieved in two-element antennae, where the edge-to-edge distance is kept at 0.19 λ0 which is less than the conventional half wavelength. The Y-shaped decoupling and shorting pins improve the isolation up to 14 dB and can mitigate the current moment between the two ports effectively. The open slots in the ground are enhancing the mutual impedance and shift the operating band of the antenna toward the lower frequency band and thus size miniaturization is also achieved. The textile antenna achieves a 10 dB impedance bandwidth from 4.24 to 5.38 GHz with more than 21.1 dB isolation in the entire band. The phantom wrist model and bending analysis are carried out with the textile antenna to validate the on-body effects of the antenna in wearable and 5G applications.

In this work, a compact size 4 ports multiple input multiple output (MIMO) slot antenna with the connected ground for Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) and X band applications is introduced and discussed. The single antenna is a cross-shaped slot antenna in the ground plane and a 50 Ω microstrip line with a small L-stub is used to feed the antenna on the other side. The suggested MIMO antenna has four identical elements arranged to be orthogonal to each other to enhance the MIMO system performance. The antenna elements are connected with a small strip to compose the proposed connected ground antennas. The suggested MIMO antenna has an overall size of 47 mm × 47 mm. The antenna has tested and simulated bandwidth with S11 < −10 dB extended from 4– 14 GHz and has isolation greater than 20 dB between ports without utilizing the decoupling elements and with good consistency between results. The MIMO antenna has peak gain and efficiency, envelope correlation coefficient, diversity gain, and channel capacity loss of 5.6 dBi and 80%, <5 × 10–3, 10 dB, and <0.4 bit/s/Hz, respectively which prove that our antenna can be suggested for the UWB MIMO applications.

The major component for the effective functioning of airborne unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is an antenna. The unified integration of an antenna with UAVs without disturbing the other components of UAVs, compact size, thin, and wideband antennas are preferred. Based on these prerequisites, a low-profile and a wideband antenna is presented for autonomous UAVs for C-band applications. The antenna is designed on an extremely thin substrate of size 0.01λ0 without compromising the antenna's broad bandwidth. The antenna structure comprises a corrugated U-shaped patch, a few parasitic patches along with the partial ground. Initially, only a single mode was excited using a U-shaped patch, then further on introducing a few more parasitic patches along with corrugations in a U-shaped patch other modes were also coupled leading to enhancement in the bandwidth of the antenna. The proposed antenna along with a 2 × 2 quad-port multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) antenna is designed and fabricated. The measured results are found to be in good agreement with the simulated results. A broad bandwidth of 74.5% (4.1–9.0 GHz) with 5.02 dBi peak gain at 6.6 GHz is exhibited by the fabricated MIMO antenna. Thus, the designed antenna proves to be an effective candidate for UAV-based C-band applications.

A low-profile multi-polarized MIMO ultra-wideband antenna suitable for body-centric communications is reported. MIMO configuration is achieved using the symmetric heptagonal monopole (SHM) antenna, a mirrored SHM antenna, an asymmetric ruby-shaped monopole (ARSM) antenna, and a mirrored ARSM antenna placed over the modified C-shaped ground plane (MCGP). The proposed antenna elements are designed to achieve resonance for the entire ultra-wideband frequency range. The SHM antenna is coupled with a co-planar waveguide to produce linear polarization. An ARSM antenna generates circular polarization utilizing an asymmetric geometry both in the radiator and a truncated ground plane. Both the SHM antenna and an ARSM antenna are aligned face-to-face over an MCGP plane and good isolation >15 dB is realized between the antenna elements. The gain and total efficiency for linear polarized and the circularly polarized antennas are 3.05–4.8 dBi/48–66% and from 2.8 to 5 dBic/52 to 70.5%, respectively. The specific absorption rate values are evaluated to understand their suitability for WBAN communications.

Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems, which use multiple antennas to deliver faster data rates, are one of the promising methods in 5G services. 5G is a popular issue among the world's main telecom firms currently. The sub-6 GHz band for 5G applications in various countries lies between 3 and 5 GHz. The sub-6 GHz 5G bands are 3.4–3.8 GHz in Europe, 3.1–3.55 GHz in the USA, and 3.3–3.6 GHz and 4.8–4.99 GHz in China. This paper presents a two-element slotted octagon-shaped antenna operating in the sub-6 GHz band (3.1–4.5 GHz) for 5G applications. A T-formed isolation structure is placed at a ground plane to minimize mutual coupling between MIMO antennas. The proposed MIMO antenna has physical dimensions of 55 × 38 mm2 and an envelope correlation coefficient or correlation of 0.0004 over the entire operating band. The antenna operates at 3.6 GHz, with a return loss of 40.8 dB at the resonance. An antenna prototype has been investigated and proven to be of excellent quality in terms of performance like isolation >20 dB, efficiency >80%, and mean effective gain <−3 dB over the full operating band.

This paper describes a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna for low millimeter (mm)-wave applications based on dielectric resonators. This is the first time that a filtering response is used in conjunction with an MIMO antenna operating at a low mm-wave frequency. The antenna is simulated using an asymmetrical U-shaped aperture and a microstrip line feed. The suggested filtenna has two distinguishing characteristics: (i) the diversity parameters of the proposed MIMO are increased by including pattern and spatial diversity, and (ii) the proposed feed mechanism of a dielectric resonator provides the filtering response. Between the two ports, a metallic plate tilts the radiation pattern by 45°. The anti-parallel locations of the ports increase the isolation value by >30 dB. To validate the performance of the suggested antenna, the proposed filtenna was built and confirmed. The proposed antenna operates between the frequencies 27.9 and 28.5 GHz. Within the operating frequency range, the observed gain is ~4.5 dBi. On the contrary, the gain suppression level beyond the operational frequency range is ~15 dB. The stable radiation properties and high diversity parameter values of the suggested filtenna make it an effective solution for 5G Internet of Things sensing applications.

In this article, a novel double-face logarithmic spiral metamaterial (LSMTM) superstrate-inspired multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) for fully enhanced circularly polarized (CP) antenna system is examined for 5G wireless communications. This novel double-face LSMTM superstrate acts as a planar concave-concave lens. Initially, the antenna is designed with a circular spiral patch to generate CP radiation in the frequency band of interest. Then, at a height of 6.5 mm (0.606 λo) above the MIMO antenna, which has a 0.8 mm (0.075 λo) edge-to-edge separation, the LSMTM superstrate is employed for isolation, gain, and bandwidth improvement. The proposed superstrate enhances the isolation, gain, and bandwidth of the antenna by about 32 dB, 3.47 dB, and 900 MHz, respectively. In contrast to the conventional technique of verifying operation with a simulated surface current distribution, characteristic mode analysis (CMA) is used to provide a better explanation of the proposed antenna's different modes and the creation of circular polarization. Additionally, the CMA supports the development of an effective technique that can predict whether or not the isolation can be further improved. The simulated results align with the measured results and are well adapted for 5G wireless communication devices.

To satisfy the increasing requirements of wireless communication, a compact dual band MIMO antenna is presented in this paper. The presented antenna consists of two symmetric radiating elements operating at both 3.5 and 4.5 GHz bands. To enhance the isolation between the two radiating elements, an I-shaped decoupling structure is introduced. The measured −10 dB reflection coefficients frequency bands are 3.3–3.8 and 4.3–5.8 GHz. The measured isolation S21 between the two radiating elements are better than 15 and 17 dB at the lower and higher frequency band, respectively. The overall dimension of the proposed antenna is 50 × 22 × 1.59 mm3. The measured result indicates that the proposed antenna can be a good candidate for 5 G/WLAN wireless communication.

The μ-negative metamaterial (MNG) two-element MIMO antenna design was proposed in this article for WiMAX (2.5–2.8 GHz), WLAN (3.2–5.9 GHz), and ITU band (8.15−8.25 GHz) applications. The first design of the MIMO antenna operates at 2.7 and 4.9 GHz frequencies. In order to reduce the mutual coupling, a defective ground structure is used. For further isolation improvement, an MNG unit cell is placed in between the two radiating elements at a distance of 10 mm. The designed antenna elements have better than −23 dB coupling isolation between the two radiating elements. Moreover, with MNG an additional frequency of 8.2 GHz is obtained, which is useful for ITU band applications. The proposed antenna bandwidth is expanded by 19% in the lower operational band, 20% in the second operational band, and 32% in the higher frequency band with the MNG unit cell. From the analysis, the proposed antenna is suitable for WiMAX/WLAN/ITU band applications because of its low enveloped correlation coefficient, and highest directive gain and low mutual coupling between the radiating components. The proposed antenna was simulated, fabricated, and measured with the help of the Schwarz ZVL vector network analyzer and anechoic chamber. Both measured and simulated results are highly accurate and highly recommended for WiMAX/WLAN/ITU bands.

In this paper, a dual-band 8 × 8 multi-input multi-output (MIMO) array antenna operating in 3.5 GHz band (3400–3600 MHz) and 5.5 GHz band (5150–5925 MHz) for 5G mobile handset is presented. The proposed hybrid antenna includes a comb-shaped monopole and an L-shaped open slot antenna which are symmetrically located on the inner surface of the side-edge frame of smartphone. Pattern diversity is achieved that can mitigate envelope correlation coefficients (ECCs) and improve the MIMO system performances. The prototype of proposed dual-band eight-element MIMO antenna is fabricated and experimentally measured. The results show that isolation <−10 and <−15 dB, respectively in the lower band and high band without any additional decoupling element are achieved and the desired bands are satisfied under the condition of −6 dB impedance matching. Moreover, the essential parameters for evaluation of the MIMO system performance such as the ECC, mean effective gain (MEG), and ergodic channel capacity are calculated. Furthermore, the influence of user's hand on the radiation characteristics of proposed MIMO antenna are also investigated and discussed. Based on the result, the proposed MIMO antenna is a good candidate for use in future 5G applications.

A compact four-element ultra-wideband (UWB) multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with dual polarization and dual-notched capabilities was developed and fabricated. The MIMO antenna is composed of four orthogonally placed half-cutting UWB antenna elements. This orthogonal placement improves the isolation. Furthermore, an L-shaped slot and a continuous bending slot are etched to realize the band-rejection function in the WiMAX and WLAN bands. The result shows that the antenna achieved operating bands of 2.9–16.5 GHz (140.2%, S11 < −10 dB), fully covering the UWB (3.1–10.6 GHz). The port isolation is greater than 23 dB in the frequency band of interest, excluding two rejected bands. Moreover, the MIMO antenna has excellent diversity performance, such as a low envelope correlation coefficient (<0.004), high diversity gain (approximately 10 dB), and good omnidirectional radiation characteristics.

A new wideband multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system able to operate in a frequency band ranging between 3.3 and 7.1 GHz is proposed for fifth-generation (5G) new radio applications for future smartphones. The design structure contains four pairs of compact microstrip-fed slot antennas, located at the corners of an FR-4 printed circuit board. Each pair of antennas consists of a radiator with two concentric annular slots, fed by two L-shaped microstrip-feeding lines and provides polarization and radiation pattern diversity function due to the orthogonal placement of their feed-line. In order to reduce the mutual coupling characteristic, we have inserted a rectangular slot under each microstrip feed-line. Besides, we have coupled and linked the two rings by a small gap to combine and move the resonant modes so as to achieve wideband coverage. The measured and simulated results show that the proposed design achieves the desired performance, such as isolation >12 dB, a total efficiency >48%, and an envelope correlation coefficient <0.07. In addition, the radiation pattern, the total efficiency, the realized gain, and the channel capacity are also studied. According to the reached results, the proposed MIMO antenna may be a suitable application-oriented design for 5G mobile communication.

In this paper, a compact 4-port band-notched multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) antenna with asymmetric coplanar strip (ACS) feed is presented for ultra-wide band (UWB) applications. The MIMO antenna is comprised of four semi-elliptical radiators with ACS feed for UWB applications and it is printed on inexpensive FR4 substrate of size 48 × 52 mm2 with ɛr = 4.4 and 1.6 mm height. The impedance characteristics of the suggested MIMO antenna ranges from 2.7 to 11 GHz with a band-notched behavior from 3 to 4 GHz to reduce the interception with WiMAX applications, and the isolation level over the achieved band is more than 20 dB between any two adjacent elements. Moreover, the radiation pattern of the proposed UWB antenna is almost omnidirectional with an average realized gain of 3.5 dBi over the entire achieved frequency band. The proposed ACS-fed antenna is confirmed by fabricating and measuring it's impedance and radiation characteristics. Finally, good consistency between simulation and measured outcomes is obtained confirming the validity of the MIMO antenna for real-life UWB wireless systems.

This study presents a new design of a four-element multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna, which is suitable for X-band applications. The circular polarization (CP) operation in this work is attained by using Tai Chi-shaped patches and L-shaped feeds. The proposed four-element MIMO antenna achieves two resonant frequencies, the first one at around 7.75 GHz and the second one with CP radiation is at approximately 10.15 GHz frequency. The measured isolations between ports with 46.7 × 46.7 mm2 total dimensions are <−20 dB. Due to the experiments, the envelop correlation coefficient for the orthogonal and parallel ports of the proposed MIMO antenna is <0.003 and 0.005, respectively. Additionally, the presented antenna has a circularly polarized performance in the frequency band of 9.75–10.41 GHz and the average realized peak gain almost 2 dBic. The investigated antenna in this work is fabricated and tested in which the results are in a good agreement.
