Test items are often evaluated and compared by contrasting the shapes of their item characteristics curves (ICC's) or surfaces. The current paper develops and applies three general (i.e., nonparametric) comparisons of the shapes of two item characteristic surfaces: (i) proportional latent odds, (ii) uniform relative difficulty, and (iii) item sensitivity. Two items may be compared in these ways while making no assumption about the shapes of item characteristic surfaces for other items, and no assumption about the dimensionality of the latent variable. Also studied is a method for comparing the relative shapes of two item characteristic curves in two examinee populations.

Consider any scoring procedure for determining whether an examinee knows the answer to a test item. Let xi = 1 if a correct decision is made about whether the examinee knows the i th item; otherwise xi = 0. The k out of n reliability of a test is ρk = Pr (Σxi ≥k). That is, ρk is the probability of making at least k correct decisions for a typical (randomly sampled) examinee. This paper proposes an approximation of ρk that can be estimated with an answer-until-correct test. The paper also suggests a scoring procedure that might be used when ρk is judged to be too small under a conventional scoring rule where it is decided an examinee knows if and only if the correct response is given.

The Dutch Identity is a useful way to reexpress the basic equations of item response models that relate the manifest probabilities to the item response functions (IRFs) and the latent trait distribution. The identity may be exploited in several ways. For example: (a) to suggest how item response models behave for large numbers of items—they are approximate submodels of second-order loglinear models for 2J tables; (b) to suggest new ways to assess the dimensionality of the latent trait—principle components analysis of matrices composed of second-order interactions from loglinear models; (c) to give insight into the structure of latent class models; and (d) to illuminate the problem of identifying the IRFs and the latent trait distribution from sample data.

In this note, we describe the iterative procedure introduced earlier by Goodman to calculate the maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters in latent structure analysis, and we provide here a simple and direct proof of the fact that the parameter estimates obtained with the iterative procedure cannot lie outside the allowed interval. Formann recently stated that Goodman's algorithm can yield parameter estimates that lie outside the allowed interval, and we prove in the present note that Formann's contention is incorrect.

Latent class models with covariates are widely used for psychological, social, and educational research. Yet the fundamental identifiability issue of these models has not been fully addressed. Among the previous research on the identifiability of latent class models with covariates, Huang and Bandeen-Roche (Psychometrika 69:5–32, 2004) studied the local identifiability conditions. However, motivated by recent advances in the identifiability of the restricted latent class models, particularly cognitive diagnosis models (CDMs), we show in this work that the conditions in Huang and Bandeen-Roche (Psychometrika 69:5–32, 2004) are only necessary but not sufficient to determine the local identifiability of the model parameters. To address the open identifiability issue for latent class models with covariates, this work establishes conditions to ensure the global identifiability of the model parameters in both strict and generic sense. Moreover, our results extend to the polytomous-response CDMs with covariates, which generalizes the existing identifiability results for CDMs.

Statistical methods are presented to facilitate a more complete analysis of results obtained when a scaling model is applied to data from two or more groups. These methods can be used to (a) compare the corresponding estimated latent distributions obtained using the scaling model applied to the different groups, (b) compare the corresponding estimated item reliabilities (or item response error rates) for the different groups, and (c) test whether the scaling model applied to the several groups can be replaced by a more parsimonious scaling model that includes various homogeneity constraints (i.e., constraints that describe which parameters in the model are the same for the several groups). Various kinds of scaling models are considered here in the multiple-group context.

This paper introduces dynamic latent-class models for the analysis and interpretation of stability and change in recurrent choice data. These latent-class models provide a nonparametric representation of individual taste differences. Changes in preferences are modeled by allowing for individual-level transitions from one latent class to another over time. The most general model facilitates a saturated representation of class membership changes. Several special cases are presented to obtain a parsimonious description of latent change mechanisms. An easy to implement EM algorithm is derived for parameter estimation. The approach is illustrated by a detailed analysis of a purchase incidence data set.

Finally, to compare the efficiency and robustness of these new estimators with that obtained through maximum likelihood when the sample size is not big enough to apply the asymptotic results, we have carried out a simulation study.

Convergence of the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm to a global optimum of the marginal log likelihood function for unconstrained latent variable models with categorical indicators is presented. The sufficient conditions under which global convergence of the EM algorithm is attainable are provided in an information-theoretic context by interpreting the EM algorithm as alternating minimization of the Kullback–Leibler divergence between two convex sets. It is shown that these conditions are satisfied by an unconstrained latent class model, yielding an optimal bound against which more highly constrained models may be compared.

Although latent attributes that follow a hierarchical structure are anticipated in many areas of educational and psychological assessment, current psychometric models are limited in their capacity to objectively evaluate the presence of such attribute hierarchies. This paper introduces the Hierarchical Diagnostic Classification Model (HDCM), which adapts the Log-linear Cognitive Diagnosis Model to cases where attribute hierarchies are present. The utility of the HDCM is demonstrated through simulation and by an empirical example. Simulation study results show the HDCM is efficiently estimated and can accurately test for the presence of an attribute hierarchy statistically, a feature not possible when using more commonly used DCMs. Empirically, the HDCM is used to test for the presence of a suspected attribute hierarchy in a test of English grammar, confirming the data is more adequately represented by hierarchical attribute structure when compared to a crossed, or nonhierarchical structure.

A Cultural Consensus Theory approach for ordinal data is developed, leading to a new model for ordered polytomous data. The model introduces a novel way of measuring response biases and also measures consensus item values, a consensus response scale, item difficulty, and informant knowledge. The model is extended as a finite mixture model to fit both simulated and real multicultural data, in which subgroups of informants have different sets of consensus item values. The extension is thus a form of model-based clustering for ordinal data. The hierarchical Bayesian framework is utilized for inference, and two posterior predictive checks are developed to verify the central assumptions of the model.

This paper introduces a flexible class of stochastic mixture models for the analysis and interpretation of individual differences in recurrent choice and other types of count data. These choice models are derived by specifying elements of the choice process at the individual level. Probability distributions are introduced to describe variations in the choice process among individuals and to obtain a representation of the aggregate choice behavior. Due to the explicit consideration of random effect sources, the choice models are parsimonious and readily interpretable. An easy to implement EM algorithm is presented for parameter estimation. Two applications illustrate the proposed approach.

This paper provides a description of a new adaptive testing algorithm based on a latent class modeling framework. The algorithm incorporates a four-stage iterative procedure that conditionally minimizes expected loss in classification of respondents across different content domains. The classification decisions relate to the membership of a person in a category of a latent variable for each of the separate domains considered. The algorithm appears to be particularly effective when latent class membership is related across the various domains of interest, since classification decisions on domains assessed early in the process are used to revise the probabilities for latent class membership on domains for which classification decisions have not yet been made. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, a simulation based upon real data was conducted. For this example, the algorithm proved to be relatively efficient, requiring only 40% of the number of items needed under a nonadaptive approach. In addition, the algorithm provided classification decisions which, in 96% of the cases, were consistent with decisions based upon all available items when the maximum acceptable classification error rate was set at 5%.

This paper uses log-linear models with latent variables (Hagenaars, in Loglinear Models with Latent Variables, 1993) to define a family of cognitive diagnosis models. In doing so, the relationship between many common models is explicitly defined and discussed. In addition, because the log-linear model with latent variables is a general model for cognitive diagnosis, new alternatives to modeling the functional relationship between attribute mastery and the probability of a correct response are discussed.

This paper presents a new class of models for persons-by-items data. The essential new feature of this class is the representation of the persons: every person is represented by its membership to multiple latent classes, each of which belongs to one latent classification. The models can be considered as a formalization of the hypothesis that the responses come about in a process that involves the application of a number of mental operations. Two algorithms for maximum likelihood (ML) and maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation are described. They both make use of the tractability of the complete data likelihood to maximize the observed data likelihood. Properties of the MAP estimators (i.e., uniqueness and goodness-of-recovery) and the existence of asymptotic standard errors were examined in a simulation study. Then, one of these models is applied to the responses to a set of fraction addition problems. Finally, the models are compared to some related models in the literature.

We estimate a travel cost model for the George Washington & Jefferson National Forests using an On-Site Latent Class Poisson Model. We show that the constraints of ad-hoc truncation and homogenous preferences significantly impact consumer surplus estimates derived from the on-site travel cost model. By relaxing the constraints, we show that more than one class of visitors with unique preferences exists in the population. The resulting demand functions, price responsive behaviors, and consumer surplus estimates reflect differences across these classes of visitors. With heterogeneous preferences, a group of ‘local residents’ exists with a probability of 8% and, on average take 113 visits.

Building on past research, we implement a hierarchical latent class model to analyze political participation from a comparative perspective. Our methodology allows simultaneously: (i) estimating citizens’ propensity to engage in conventional and unconventional modes of participation; (ii) classifying individuals into underlying “types” capturing within- and cross-country variations in participation; and (iii) assessing how this classification varies with micro- and macro-level factors. We apply our model to Latin American survey data. We show that our method outperforms alternative approaches used to study participation and derive typologies of political engagement. Substantively, we find that the distribution of participatory types is similar throughout the continent, and that it correlates strongly with respondents’ socio-demographic characteristics and crime victimization.
