Bartonella is a widely distributed Gram-negative bacterium that includes species that are capable of causing illness in humans. Rodents represent one of the main reservoirs of zoonotic pathogens, and monitoring their populations can provide valuable insights into human health. We conducted a surveillance study of rodents from two north-western states of Mexico (Baja California and Chihuahua) to investigate the prevalence and genetic diversity of Bartonella by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and sequencing of the citrate synthase (gltA) gene. A total of 586 rodents belonging to 28 species were captured, and 408 were tested for Bartonella spp. The overall Bartonella spp. prevalence was 39.71%. The prevalence found in Chihuahua was higher (42.80%) than in Baja California (32.52%), and rodents such as Neotoma albigula, Neotoma mexicana, Peromyscus boylii, and Chaetodipus baileyi had the highest prevalence. The gltA sequences revealed seven genetic variants, some of which were obtained from Peromyscus and Dipodomys rodents and were associated with Bartonella species of human health concern, such as B. grahamii and B. vinsonii subsp. arupensis. In addition, a sequence obtained from a Peromyscus maniculatus was clustered with Candidatus Bartonella rudakovii, a previously unreported association. This study provides valuable data and new insight into the Bartonella-hosts interactions in rodent species in north-western Mexico.

Formation of authigenic trioctahedral Mg-rich smectite is common in evaporative lake sediments, but was not described previously in modern marine evaporative environments. This study documents formation of authigenic K-rich, Mg-smectite during very early diagenesis in the dominantly siliciclastic Salina Ometepec (Baja California), a large supratidal evaporative sabkha complex near the mouth of the Colorado River. Here, sediment pore waters are exceptionally Mg2+-rich relative to other marine evaporative environments due to suppressed sulfate reduction which limits production of carbonate alkalinity and, hence, carbonate (particularly dolomite) precipitation. Sediment cores were obtained along a five km transect seaward across the hypersaline mud flat to evaluate how these atypical geochemical conditions would affect the clay mineral compositions.

Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) observations show that the smectite from the marine Inlet, near the sediment source, consists of grains of irregular shape that give selected area diffraction (SAED) patterns reflecting dominant turbostratic stacking. Analytical electron microscopy (AEM) analyses indicate that K+ is the dominant interlayer cation; the mean composition is approximately K0.7(Al3.3Fe(III)0.3Mg0.5)(Al0.5Si7.5)O20(OH)4. Such smectite is implied to be detrital in part because it is similar to smectite known to be deposited by the Colorado River.

Smectite from the hypersaline mud flat occurs as aggregates of small subhedral pseudohexagonal plate or lath-shaped crystals ≤250 nm in diameter, with thicknesses varying between three and ten layers. The SAED patterns reflect substantial turbostratic stacking, but with a greater frequency of interlayer coherency as compared with detrital smectite. Crystals from greater sediment depths are larger and more nearly euhedral. This smectite is dominantly trioctahedral, with mean composition approximately K0.7(Al0.7Fe(III)0.5Mg4.45)(Al1.2Si6.8)O20(OH)4 (saponitic). This smectite is inferred to be dominantly authigenic in origin.

The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and STEM/AEM data collectively imply that detrital aluminous dioctahedral smectite reacts to form authigenic Mg-rich trioctahedral smectite, driven in part by the high Mg2+/ Ca2+ ratio of pore waters. Such early-formed Mg-rich smectite may be the precursor for the trioctahedral mixed-layer smectite, corrensite, and chlorite assemblages found in ancient marine evaporative sequences. These results also add to the accumulating evidence that interlayer K+ in marine smectite is fixed during the earliest stages of marine diagenesis near the sediment water interface.

AMS radiocarbon dating of two modified pearls from the Covacha Babisuri site, Espíritu Santo Island, Baja California Sur, México, corroborates associated midden dates suggesting that traditional indigenous use and modification of pearls as items of adornment began at least 8,500 years ago. To our knowledge, these are the oldest modified pearls found in dated archaeological contexts anywhere in the world. The presence of similarly modified pearls in later components at Covacha Babisuri suggests that this custom continued throughout the Middle Holocene, and ethnohistoric accounts indicate that similar modifications of pearls continued up until the Historic Era. These data show a long history of cultural continuity in the region in pearl harvesting, modification, and use as adornment.

A lacustrine sequence from Laguna Seca San Felipe, Baja California, in the southwestern Sonoran Desert, provides the first record of mid- to late-Wisconsin vegetation in one of the driest regions of North America. Pollen analysis was performed in the intermediate part of the sequence from ca. 44,000 to ca. 13,000 14C yr B.P. according to six 14C radiocarbon dates. Sedimentation of eolian sands prior to 44,000 14C yr B.P. indicates dry conditions. High pollen concentration of montane and chaparral species in the pollen assemblages contrast with the modern desert vegetation. Sixty-four pollen types were identified. The source of mid- to late-Wisconsin sedimentation must have been the plant communities in the surrounding highlands of the basin. Mid-Wisconsin pollen assemblages dominated by pines, junipers, and Artemisia reflect humid conditions in the area. By late Wisconsin time, a significant increment in junipers indicates a lowering in the altitudinal ranges of woodlands/chaparral. Pollen from wind-pollinated species is abundant while desert plants, specifically animal or insect pollinated species, are poorly represented. The San Felipe record does not identify the Last Glacial Maximum as the time of greatest effective moisture, as suggested by pluvial lake levels and other paleoclimatic evidence in the soutwestern United States.

A packrat midden located in the Sierra San Francisco, Baja California Sur, Mexico, dating to ca. 10,200 14C yr B.P., contains remains of California juniper (Juniperus californica) and other taxa now associated with southern California chaparral. California juniper does not occur in the Sierra San Francisco today, although “relict” populations of a few chaparral taxa still occur at higher elevations. This midden record documents the early Holocene occurrence of Baja California coniferous woodland and chaparral vegetation far south of its present distribution or its previously known extent from other fossil records. Based on modern climatic tolerances of California juniper and other taxa, central Baja California experienced a mild Mediterranean-type climate at least 5°–6°C cooler than the climate of today, with at least twice the winter precipitation the region now receives.

The El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a major source of climatic variation worldwide, with significant impacts on modern human and animal populations. However, few detailed records exist on the long-term effects of ENSO on prehistoric vertebrate populations. Here we examine how lagomorph (rabbit and hare) deposition rate, population age structure and taxonomic composition from Abrigo de los Escorpiones, a well-dated, trans-Holocene vertebrate fauna from northern Baja California, Mexico, vary as a function of the frequency of wet El Niño events and eastern Pacific sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) derived from eastern Pacific geological records. Faunal indices vary significantly in response to El Niño-based precipitation and SST, with substantial moisture-driven variability in the middle and late Holocene. The late Holocene moisture pulse is coincident with previously documented changes in the population dynamics of other vertebrates, including humans. As the frequency and intensity of ENSO is anticipated to vary in the future, these results have important implications for change in future vertebrate populations.

A total of 16 species of intertidal brachyuran crabs were recorded from the three major estuaries (Punta Banda, False Bay-San Quintín and Laguna Manuela) of the west coast of the state of Baja California, Mexico. The species belong to 7 families: Cancridae (3), Grapsidae (2), Ocypodidae (2), Panopeidae (3), Pinnotheridae (4), Portunidae (1) and Varunidae (1). New distributional records include an extension of the northern limits of Cyrtoplax schmitti Rathbun, 1935, Panopeus purpureus Lockington, 1877, Goniopsis pulchra (Lockington, 1877), Uca princeps (Smith, 1870) and Pinnixa longipes (Lockington 1877).

Dictyopteris prolifera, a marine algae (Phaeophyceae) native to Asian waters (Japan), has been collected recently on the western coast of the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico. Its finding represents the first record of this non-indigenous species on the Mexican Pacific coast, which also means a new record for American waters. Dictyopteris prolifera was found in June and September 2010, growing attached to rocks in the intertidal zone at Punta Morro Redondo, Cedros Island in Baja California, Mexico. Direct observations in the field about its abundance and size showed that D. prolifera has established as a permanent species. The mean length of specimens of this population is ~25 cm. Results of a monitoring programme show an increasing record of non-indigenous species on the coast of Baja California, mainly derived from ship traffic.

Stomach contents of 893 blue shark (Prionace glauca) caught off Ensenada, Todos Santos Bay, Baja California, from 1995 to 1997 were analysed. 614 had identifiable food remains. A large variety of pelagic cephalopods occurred in 55.5% of all stomachs and accounted for 46.2% of all prey and 84% by estimated weight of stomach contents. The most abundant (17%) and frequent (32%) was Histioteuthis heteropsis and the most important by estimated weight (22%) was ‘Gonatus californiensis’. Argonauta spp. and Vampyroteuthis infernalis were also abundant prey. A pair of beaks of giant squid Architeuthis sp. constitutes the first record for Mexican waters. Feeding habits and the probability of scavenging on mesopelagic cephalopods is discussed. The single most abundant prey was the pelagic, red crab Pleuroncodes planipes (41.7%). Other prey included teleost fish, amniotes and floating items. Diet varied greatly between months with no clear seasonal pattern. Tiny diet differences due to shark size or sex were inconclusive. A thorough review of studies on blue sharks stomach contents analysis is given. Blue shark feed on a large variety of passive pelagic prey, mainly mesopelagic cephalopods, that could be preyed upon as well as scavenged. Depletion of this predator due to overfishing may be leading to unknown cascading top-down effects in the mesopelagic realm.

On February 2003, in Punta Abreojos, Baja California Sur, Mexico, a basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) was caught. This specimen represents the first confirmed record in Mexico and the southern most report in north-east Pacific for the basking shark.

Morangaya pensilis is an endemic monotypic cactus genus from the southern part of the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico. Previously known only as scattered individuals occurring at a very low density in the highest areas of Sierra de La Laguna, the occurrence of a relatively more dense population (4–7 plants per 250 m2) is reported on Sierra Cacachilas, c. 40 km to the north. Disturbance to the species' habitat includes fragmentation, illegal collection and trade, and land use changes, especially to farming and cattle ranching. Seeds collected from Sierra Cacachilas had a relatively high viability (92%) but recruitment (of 2-month old seedlings) in the area was relatively low, despite above average rainfall in the year of measurement. M. pensilis is eligible for inclusion in Mexico's list of threatened species and fulfils the requirements for categorization as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Management activities that are already taking place in this area include restrictions on cattle and goat grazing and consideration of areas suitable for translocation of the species.

The >150 islands in north-western México are relatively pristine, but may easily be damaged by unregulated human use. Tourists visit many of these islands, but their numbers and impact are unknown. To examine some of the costs and benefits of ecotourism we sent a questionnaire to 42 ecotourism companies that visit islands in north-western México; 29 respondents reported that tourist days on these islands had increased at >7% yr-1, from <15 000 in 1986 to about 47 000 in 1993. Neither government regulation nor cost of trips were reported to be important impediments to tourism growth. In 1993, ecotourist organizations visiting islands reported spending US$3.7 million, none of which went directly to the protection and management of the islands. We provide several management options to increase the conservation benefits of ecotourism and minimize the negative impacts.

The Peninsular Ranges Batholith of southern and Baja California is the largest segment of a Cretaceous magmatic arc that was once continuous from northern California to southern Baja California. In this batholith, the emplacement of igneous rocks took place during a single sequence of magmatic activity, unlike many of the other components of the Cordilleran batholiths which formed during successive separate magmatic episodes. Detailed radiometric dating has shown that it is a composite of two batholiths. A western batholith, which was more heterogeneous in composition, formed as a static magmatic arc between 140 and 105 Ma and was intrusive in part into related volcanic rocks. The eastern batholith formed as a laterally transgressing arc which moved away from those older rocks between 105 and 80 Ma, intruding metasedimentary rocks. Rocks of the batholith range from undersaturated gabbros through to felsic granites, but tonalite is the most abundant rock throughout. Perhaps better than elsewhere in the Cordillera, the batholith shows beautifully developed asymmetries in chemical and isotopic properties. The main gradients in chemical composition from W to E are found among the trace elements, with Ba, Sr, Nb and the light rare earth elements increasing by more than a factor of two, and P, Rb, Pb, Th, Zn and Ga showing smaller increases. Mg and the transition metals decrease strongly towards the E, with Sc, V and Cu falling to less than half of their value in the most westerly rocks. Oxygen becomes very systematically more enriched in18O from W to E and the Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic systems change progressively from mantle values in the W to a more evolved character on the eastern side of the batholith. In detail the petrogenesis of the Peninsular Ranges Batholith is not completely understood, but many general aspects of the origin are clear. The exposed rocks, particularly in the western batholith, closely resemble those of present day island arcs, although the most typical and average tonalitic composition is distinctly more felsic than the mean quartz diorite or mafic andesite composition of arcs. Chemical and isotopic properties of the western part of the batholith indicate that it formed as the root of a primitive island arc on oceanic lithosphere at a convergent plate margin. Further E, the plutonic rocks appear to have been derived by partial melting from deeper sources of broadly basaltic composition at subcrustal levels. The compositional systematics of the batholith do not reflect a simple mixing of various end-members but are a reflection of the differing character of the source regions laterally and vertically away from the pre-Cretaceous continental margin.
