We study the period map of configurations of n points on the projective line constructed via a cyclic cover branching along these points. By considering the decomposition of its Hodge structure into eigenspaces, we establish the codimension of the locus where the eigenperiod map is still pure. Furthermore, we show that the period map extends to the divisors of a specific moduli space of weighted stable rational curves, and that this extension satisfies a local Torelli map along its fibers.

We exhibit large families of K3 surfaces with real multiplication, both abstractly, using lattice theory, the Torelli theorem and the surjectivity of the period map, as well as explicitly, using dihedral covers and isogenies.

Fujino gave a proof for the semi-ampleness of the moduli part in the canonical bundle formula in the case when the general fibers are K3 surfaces or abelian varieties. We show a similar statement when the general fibers are primitive symplectic varieties. This answers a question of Fujino raised in the same article. Moreover, using the structure theory of varieties with trivial first Chern class, we reduce the question of semi-ampleness in the case of families of K-trivial varieties to a question when the general fibers satisfy a slightly weaker Calabi–Yau condition.

We prove that the period mapping is dominant for elliptic surfaces over an elliptic curve with $12$ nodal fibers, and that its degree is larger than $1$. This settles the final case of infinitesimal Torelli for a generic elliptic surface.

We prove some results on the nilpotent orbit theorem for complex variations of Hodge structure.

We extend classical results of Perego and Rapagnetta on moduli spaces of sheaves of type OG10 to moduli spaces of Bridgeland semistable objects on the Kuznetsov component of a cubic fourfold. In particular, we determine the period of this class of varieties and use it to understand when they become birational to moduli spaces of sheaves on a K3 surface.

For an algebraic K3 surface with complex multiplication (CM), algebraic fibres of the associated twistor space away from the equator are again of CM type. In this paper, we show that algebraic fibres corresponding to points at the same altitude of the twistor base ${S^2} \simeq \mathbb{P}_\mathbb{C}^1$ share the same CM endomorphism field. Moreover, we determine all the admissible Picard numbers of the twistor fibres.

Let $\mathbb {V}$ be a polarized variation of Hodge structure over a smooth complex quasi-projective variety $S$. In this paper, we give a complete description of the typical Hodge locus for such variations. We prove that it is either empty or equidistributed with respect to a natural differential form, the pull–push form. In particular, it is always analytically dense when the pull–push form does not vanish. When the weight is two, the Hodge numbers are $(q,p,q)$ and the dimension of $S$ is least $rq$, we prove that the typical locus where the Picard rank is at least $r$ is equidistributed in $S$ with respect to the volume form $c_q^r$, where $c_q$ is the $q$th Chern form of the Hodge bundle. We obtain also several equidistribution results of the typical locus in Shimura varieties: a criterion for the density of the typical Hodge loci of a variety in $\mathcal {A}_g$, equidistribution of certain families of CM points and equidistribution of Hecke translates of curves and surfaces in $\mathcal {A}_g$. These results are proved in the much broader context of dynamics on homogeneous spaces of Lie groups which are of independent interest. The pull–push form appears in this greater generality, we provide several tools to determine it, and we compute it in many examples.

Let $\pi \colon \mathcal {X}\to B$ be a family whose general fibre $X_b$ is a $(d_1,\,\ldots,\,d_a)$-polarization on a general abelian variety, where $1\leq d_i\leq 2$, $i=1,\,\ldots,\,a$ and $a\geq 4$. We show that the fibres are in the same birational class if all the $(m,\,0)$-forms on $X_b$ are liftable to $(m,\,0)$-forms on $\mathcal {X}$, where $m=1$ and $m=a-1$. Actually, we show a general criteria to establish whether the fibres of certain families belong to the same birational class.

Let $\mathbb {V}$ be a motivic variation of Hodge structure on a $K$-variety $S$, let $\mathcal {H}$ be the associated $K$-algebraic Hodge bundle, and let $\sigma \in \mathrm {Aut}(\mathbb {C}/K)$ be an automorphism. The absolute Hodge conjecture predicts that given a Hodge vector $v \in \mathcal {H}_{\mathbb {C}, s}$ above $s \in S(\mathbb {C})$ which lies inside $\mathbb {V}_{s}$, the conjugate vector $v_{\sigma } \in \mathcal {H}_{\mathbb {C}, s_{\sigma }}$ is Hodge and lies inside $\mathbb {V}_{s_{\sigma }}$. We study this problem in the situation where we have an algebraic subvariety $Z \subset S_{\mathbb {C}}$ containing $s$ whose algebraic monodromy group $\textbf {H}_{Z}$ fixes $v$. Using relationships between $\textbf {H}_{Z}$ and $\textbf {H}_{Z_{\sigma }}$ coming from the theories of complex and $\ell$-adic local systems, we establish a criterion that implies the absolute Hodge conjecture for $v$ subject to a group-theoretic condition on $\textbf {H}_{Z}$. We then use our criterion to establish new cases of the absolute Hodge conjecture.

We prove the generic Torelli theorem for hypersurfaces in $\mathbb {P}^{n}$ of degree $d$ dividing $n+1$, for $d$ sufficiently large. Our proof involves the higher-order study of the variation of Hodge structure along particular one-parameter families of hypersurfaces that we call ‘Schiffer variations.’ We also analyze the case of degree $4$. Combined with Donagi's generic Torelli theorem and results of Cox and Green, this shows that the generic Torelli theorem for hypersurfaces holds with finitely many exceptions.

We compute the Hodge ideals of $\mathbb{Q}$-divisors in terms of the $V$-filtration induced by a local defining equation, inspired by a result of Saito in the reduced case. We deduce basic properties of Hodge ideals in this generality, and relate them to Bernstein–Sato polynomials. As a consequence of our study we establish general properties of the minimal exponent, a refined version of the log canonical threshold, and bound it in terms of discrepancies on log resolutions, addressing a question of Lichtin and Kollár.

We study the variations of mixed Hodge structures (VMHS) associated with a pencil ${\mathcal{X}}$ of equisingular hypersurfaces of degree $d$ in $\mathbb{P}^{4}$ with only ordinary double points as singularities, as well as the variations of Hodge structures (VHS) associated with the desingularization of this family $\widetilde{{\mathcal{X}}}$. The notion of a set of singular points being in homologically good position is introduced, and, by requiring that the subset of nodes in (algebraic) general position is also in homologically good position, we can extend Griffiths’ description of the $F^{2}$-term of the Hodge filtration of the desingularization to this case, where we can also determine the possible limiting mixed Hodge structures (LMHS). The particular pencil ${\mathcal{X}}$ of quintic hypersurfaces with 100 singular double points with 86 of them in (algebraic) general position that served as the starting point for this paper is treated with particular attention.

For families of smooth complex projective varieties, we show that normal functions arising from algebraically trivial cycle classes are algebraic and defined over the field of definition of the family. In particular, the zero loci of those functions are algebraic and defined over such a field of definition. This proves a conjecture of Charles.

We extend the Kuga–Satake construction to the case of limit mixed Hodge structures of K3 type. We use this to study the geometry and Hodge theory of degenerations of Kuga–Satake abelian varieties associated with polarized variations of K3 type Hodge structures over the punctured disc.

Let ${\mathcal{D}}$ be the irreducible Hermitian symmetric domain of type $D_{2n}^{\mathbb{H}}$. There exists a canonical Hermitian variation of real Hodge structure ${\mathcal{V}}_{\mathbb{R}}$ of Calabi–Yau type over ${\mathcal{D}}$. This short note concerns the problem of giving motivic realizations for ${\mathcal{V}}_{\mathbb{R}}$. Namely, we specify a descent of ${\mathcal{V}}_{\mathbb{R}}$ from $\mathbb{R}$ to $\mathbb{Q}$ and ask whether the $\mathbb{Q}$-descent of ${\mathcal{V}}_{\mathbb{R}}$ can be realized as sub-variation of rational Hodge structure of those coming from families of algebraic varieties. When $n=2$, we give a motivic realization for ${\mathcal{V}}_{\mathbb{R}}$. When $n\geqslant 3$, we show that the unique irreducible factor of Calabi–Yau type in $\text{Sym}^{2}{\mathcal{V}}_{\mathbb{R}}$ can be realized motivically.

This paper contains two results on Hodge loci in $\mathsf{M}_{g}$. The first concerns fibrations over curves with a non-trivial flat part in the Fujita decomposition. If local Torelli theorem holds for the fibers and the fibration is non-trivial, an appropriate exterior power of the cohomology of the fiber admits a Hodge substructure. In the case of curves it follows that the moduli image of the fiber is contained in a proper Hodge locus. The second result deals with divisors in $\mathsf{M}_{g}$. It is proved that the image under the period map of a divisor in $\mathsf{M}_{g}$ is not contained in a proper totally geodesic subvariety of $\mathsf{A}_{g}$. It follows that a Hodge locus in $\mathsf{M}_{g}$ has codimension at least 2.

We give a sufficient condition for the hypergeometric function $_{3}F_{2}$ to be a linear combination of the logarithm of algebraic functions.

We extend the infinitesimal Torelli theorem for smooth hypersurfaces to nodal hypersurfaces.

We prove the Gross–Deligne conjecture on CM periods for motives associated with ${{H}^{2}}$ of certain surfaces fibered over the projective line. Then we prove for the same motives a formula which expresses the ${{K}_{1}}$-regulators in terms of hypergeometric functions $_{3}{{F}_{2}}$, and obtain a new example of non-trivial regulators.
