About this Cambridge Elements series

The Cambridge Elements Series in International Relations publishes original research on key topics in the field. It focuses on international politics broadly defined, including international security and civil conflicts, international political economy, international organizations, Global IR, and international relations theory. Our objective is to publish cutting edge research that engages crucial topics in each of these areas; the series is open to any theoretical or methodological approach.

Cambridge Elements in International Relations is edited by leading scholars in the field of international relations – see the ‘About the editors’ tab above. Each Element is rigorously peer-reviewed and published quickly in order to reach its audience in a timely fashion. Elements are updatable and will be published on the Cambridge Core platform. A low-priced print-on-demand option is also available.

Each Element is 20,000 – 30,0000 words in length, allowing for more extensive development of theory and evidence. Authors can conceive and write an Element on a shorter timeline than is feasible for a scholarly book.

Submission Process

To discuss submissions to the series, please contact the Editors ([email protected]), providing an initial, brief outline that addresses the following.

  • the subject of your Element and its place in the literature;
  • the originality and importance of your Element to research and/or teaching in the subject;
  • the intended readership for the Element, in terms of fields and level of reader;
  • the structure of the Element, and any online functionality it will require; and
  • a brief version of your CV.

The Editors will consider this initial outline, and if they decide to take the project further, they will request a full proposal of around five pages for evaluation. If that full proposal is accepted, a conditional contract will be offered. Please note that the decision on whether the manuscript will be published in the Elements series will only be taken after peer review of the final typescript is completed.
