1 The word Newār is derived from, or at least has the same origin as, Skt. nepāla-, Pkt. nevāla-. It is perhaps the form of the name used by neighbours speaking an Indo-Aryan language of the Bihāri type, in which -l- > -r-. Compare Skt. naipālī “Jasminum Sambac”, which appears as Hi. newārī, but Oṛ. niāļi and Mar. nevaļ, nevāļī.
